Bob Knight returns to Indiana

Seems like only yesterday he was rambling on and on instead of calling a basketball game

I will always remember Knight as introducing the Hoosier Handshake where he would grab a player by his nuts.

The negative opinions here don't mean a thing. The fan reception to see Knight was truly overwhelming. People paid as much as $3000 for tickets to tonight's game just to cheer for Knight. His former players couldn't get enough of him. At times there were 3 players hugging him at the same time. That is what means something. That is how the people who know him the best, his players, love the man despite his shortcomings. Knight helped a lot of his former players long after their careers were over. He was a generous and intensely dedicated man. He gave back to Indiana by making generous donations, particularly to libraries. At Indiana Knight endowed two chairs, one in history and one in law. He also raised nearly $5 million for the Indiana University library system by championing a library fund to support the library's activities. The fund was ultimately named in his honor. I met Knight on 4 occasions back in the days when he still coached at Indiana. I met him at a charity fundraiser in Chicago, at a trade show in Indianapolis and twice at a golf course in Martinsville. He was a truly funny guy and an understated sense of humor. He was a featured speaker at the fundraiser and he had the attendees practically rolling on the floor. Did he have some issues? That would be hard to deny, but he was much more than those publicized instances and to know that all you have to do was watch. I liked him.

I didn’t like him.

Bob Knight is the most divisive coach in all of American sports. His greatness was Bill Belicick level. But he was an absolute asshole.

He's 79 and looks about ready for the eternal sleep. Wish him well from here on out.

He once said if he had five Chris Street's to coach he wouldn't have had to have done much coaching.

When he moved back to Bloomington they showed his house and neighborhood on local news....

I wonder how many people saying Bob Knight was an asshole are millennials. To me he was a good coach, but had expectations for players. He was vocal and took an old school approach. I don’t think the things he got canned for were that egregious.

I’m not a millennial. Bobby Knight was not a good person. He told his players to bounce the ball off the face of Iowa players. He was a bully in the way he interacted with people. Fugg him.

Not a millennial, either. I remember watching Knight in the 1980s. He's an asshole and always has been. **** him and the Hoosiers.
At Iowa we only want a guy that everyone perceives as "nice". We don't want or need Multiple National Championships in any sport from Coaches who are big "meanies".

I had several Coaches throughout my life in various sports that were every bit the asshole Knight was, they just didn't show up on National TV. Somehow I survived without needing a Therapy Cat, and so did those Coaches, who were in reality pretty good guys.

Too bad he didn't come back sooner for his 1976 championship team's reunion...undefeated and one of the best teams of all time...they were a machine of basketball role players.

But stubborn is his middle name.

There are a lot of ways to win and his way of coaching wasnt for everyone. Had he recruited me I would have choosen a different school after seeing his first practice.

All successful coaches are tough on their players to a certain extent. He was more than just a prick.

Why again did he get fired? It wasnt because of a lack of wins.....and it wasnt because of one incident either.

Much like Frank Sinatra, Bobby Knight did it his way.

Worked pretty good if you ask me, unless one hates Winning.

If there were someway to measure it, I would wager a ton of money that most of Gen X thought he was an asshole as well

I am not a millenial. He was an asshole. IMHO, he could have been an even better coach if he had an ounce of humility.

My uncle taught at IU for over 40 years. Saw one basketball game so he wasn't into sports much. Claimed he had to deal with Knight and his players a couple of times and it was always about the fact that they were basketball players and should be treated differently. My uncle saw it differently and ultimately players didn't take his classes.

I wouldn't have had a problem with him kicking Archie off the bench and coaching the 2nd half yesterday. Seeing Keith Smart get down in his defensive position when he told him, in jest, when they were on the court yesterday made me think of this story. On time my family was at my grandparents house for Christmas in Cedar Falls and my dad and my cousin were wrestling at the bottom of the basement stairs. My Grandpa, who was in his 70s at the time, comes down and says, jokingly, "You two knock it off or I'll kick both your asses." Sure enough, they did.

Meh. I liked Gene Keady and he was an asshole. Bob Knight was abusive. Choking your own players? Saying that a woman being raped should just sit back and enjoy it? No, no, Bob Knight is scum of an entirely different order than other asshole coaches.

That is ethically outstanding.

Met Coach Keady when I worked in Banquet Dept at old Holiday Inn in downtown IC.
I was setting up their room while he was putting plans on grease board.

Coach asked me how I was doing and completely engaged me in a chat. Truly nice man.

Knight had players go to class and graduate. I guess everyone has man crushes on the modern day "nice guys" who cheat their assess off but are cool. BK crossed the line on a number of occasions, but that was a different era in all sports. My brother in law had him as a professor and interacted with him as a student manager for another sport and said he was always gracious with his time and respectful towards other non-high profile sports and athletes.

Bob Knight is one of the most "complex" individuals on earth. It's simply strange to see a man that demands such great discipline out his players have no discipline himself. A man capable of so much good can do so much bad.

A perfect summation. In his defense, he did have kids that stayed out of the police blotter but he did demand so much from them but did not have self control to keep himself in check. Hypocrite of the highest order.
