Bob Uecker

I went to college at Winona State up in Minnesota and had never heard him actually call a game. My only experience with him broadcasting was major league. I was shocked that he didn't sound anything like Harry Doyle and really enjoyed how good of a "normal" announcer he was.

well shit.

Yep. I sort of thought of him as the last of the old school MLB radio announcers left that I could catch on the radio.

I listened to Bob for over 40 years, and I'm not even a Brewers fan. My cabin is mostly a warm weather home, so I go there during times that cover baseball season. And given TV was damn near impossible until the advent of streaming (even now pretty difficult), radio was the main entertainment medium I had.

Since there were Brewers stations galore just across the river, Brewers games it was.

I will miss hearing his calls greatly...cabin Brewers listening just won't be the same any more.

I never listened to him call Brewers games, but I feel like it was always nice to know there was a guy like him out there. What a life he led. Sad day. RIP.

Bob Uecker made over 100 appearances on Johnny Carson's
Tonight Show. He was dubbed Mr. Baseball by Carson as he
showcased his humor before a national audience during the
1970's and 1980's.

Bottom Line: Bob Uecker made it into the MLB Hall of Fame
as an announcer. Of course, Uecker felt he deserved to go
into Cooperstown as a player. Everybody loved him.

You missed out. He was a big reason I became a Brewers fan while cheating on the White Sox by listening to/watching (local NBC affiliate TV on Sundays) his broadcasts from across the lake.

Would always pull up a Brewers game on the golf course (if the Cubs weren't playing at the time) just so I could listen to Uecker. Great announcer.

He was one of the old breed of baseball announcers. Somebody mentioned not many of those left. I'd put Pat Hughes on the list. He's got 40 years in the booth and still going.

Here's the funny thing about Uecker. Fans think of him as the funny TV guy, the guy from the movies, etc - and think that's all he was.

He actually was an outstanding game caller...all time great. Sure he joked around during games, but he called an excellent "nuts and bolts" broadcaster while mixing in the right amount of storytelling with it.

Well casual fans may have thought that. Real baseball fans knew how good he was in the booth.

Not too many guys basically do the same bit for 50 years and it never gets old.

And I'll say this...Major League is the best movie about sports. There are better sports movies, but they use sports to tell a story about something bigger...Hoosiers isn't really about basketball, Breaking Away isn't really about bikes, etc.

But Major League is really about nearly nothing but the baseball. Everything memorable about it is about the sport and just the sport. And no sports movie that does that is better.
