Bohannon announces

can we hope that the 3 Iowans are the new Heinrich, LaFrentz & Collinson all in 1 year and back that up with Fran's boys and Weiskamp. Hawk BB is on the rise with hawks for life. Could the future look any better?
The White Tornadoes!!!

These are Rivals listings. Rivals usually comes out with their last evaluation in the Spring of a seniors year. So say, near to about a year sooner for Jordan than the other two.

Fran has already recruited two top 100 players outside the state of Iowa: Marble and White. They are top 100 as they were both drafted. They might not have been top 100 recruits, but I think we can all agree that top 100 players are better. I wouldn't be that surprised if someone from the new class became a top 100 player.

Lick signed Marble, not Fran.

I'll go ahead and correct you. The #1 target at pg last year was Tyler Ulis. The #1 target at pg this year was Charlie Moore. Fran is clearly prioritizing the athletic drive and dish floor general. He's just falling short and resorting to fallback guys like Jordan. He's a good fallback option, but if Iowa really wants to compete and not get exposed against athletic teams you need the Charlie Moore type.

The two teams that exposed Iowa the most last year by far were Wisconsin and Gonzaga with their enormous advantage in basketball IQ, passing and shooting. The way Gonzaga dissected our screen defense was flat out embarrassing.

The most athletic team we played last year, also by far, was North Carolina.

I don't recall to many instances of getting exposed by athletic teams.

I know Moore would have been better but all this means is that Christian Williams and Conner MC are going to be the point guards.

Bohannon is likely going to be a spot guy off the bench. You can't have a 13 man roster full of starting caliber guys.

I seem to remember Adrien Payne driving the lane and sky dunking on us and another game Brandon Dawson levitating like David Blaine and shooting an uncontested 7 foot jumper in the lane. I like those kind of guys. They win Championships.

I seem to remember Iowa playing mostly close games with MSU the last 3 years and being ahead in allot of those game only to lose leads late to some extremely "physical" defense.

Thats what actually happened.

Thanks for pointing this out as it is one aspect of our recent games. However, what else happened this past year at Carver?

Travis Trice was ATHLETIC enough to get off 8 three pointers and make 7 of them. On his way to 25 points and a victory.

Meanwhile our homegrown Iowa boy Josh Oglesby pump faked his way to 0-1 and no points because he was not athletic enough to get his shot off against a more athletic defender.

That is the difference athleticism makes.

If you can't see it then I can't help you.

How athletic do you need to be to shoot wide open stand still jump shots?

Ugh, anyone listed at 6'0 is never 6'0.

Did I really read some say he is the best Bohannon? The most athletic?

I am finding it hard to believe. 3 inches shorter but better?

I won't be surprised when Williams turns out to be a very good point guard for us. And I would love to see he with the 7' wingspan sending Moore's shots back the other direction to be picked up by our wings and slammed home! Commit to Illinois Charlie!!! :)
Unless he has improved a ton, you are totally overrating Williams. He should have gone to the Valley. I am not a big fan of Moore, either.

So the taller player is always better? Got it. Thanks.
List all sub 6'0 white basketball players in last 5 yrs in college basketball. Ok, just the B1G.

You ever play basketball before? Watch the sport?

Got it. Thanks.

Coombes, IMO Williams is better at this stage than Dev Marble was as a freshman... how he turns out? Well if anyone knows I could use a good stock market tip. Dev had the attitude to want to be the best and worked like mad to achieve his goals. I hope Williams has some of that, cos I think his skills are that good.

I really wanted Moore but guess that just didn't work out (for whatever reason)
However, the more I see and read about Jordan the more excited I am.
Welcome JoBo! Glad you are going to be a Hawkeye.

So we meet again, combes. Sometimes we agree, sometimes we don't. I can only respond tit for tat and say you are totally underrating Williams. Especially about being a Mid Major.

I am surprised you are still this confident in your assessment skills. I get having an opinion but pronouncing other posters wrong (totally) after some of the slips you've had in the recent past?

I don't really care about the opinion of an Illini about a kid from the state of Illinois who happens to be a Hawkeye. Its nothing more than a slam...by someone who has not seen Williams practice with Fran & his teammates.

It is, almost unequivocally, much more beneficial to have a skilled athletic point guard who can penetrate than a skilled point guard who relies on outside shooting. The former can create more opportunities for the team on the whole. Was there any doubt that Iowa State was more athletic? Texas? Michigan State? All three had better athleticism and adequate skill at that position. Iowa lost by double digits in all of those games. And Iowa beat North Carolina in a game where MG had arguably his best outing of the season. That was more of an outlier than the norm, and just further highlights where Iowa can be as a program with exceptional point guard play.

That's not what you said Albert. You said he's 3 inches shorter, so he's got to be worse than a guy 3 inches taller. You may be able to read, which is probably debatable, but your comprehension obviously needs a little work.

Read it again Albert. Here's what YOU wrote "I am finding it hard to believe. 3 inches shorter but better?"

Be patient my friend. Jordan has a year left in high school to finish growing and as to weight he's only 25 lbs off of Val Barnes at Val's college playing weight.

Brody was all of 5'9", maybe. Loved his game and he and Val were similar, but size wise I can imagine this time next year we'll have a 6'1" Bohannon weighing in at 185.

The bad news is he probably can't defend as well as Gesell or Clemmons (at least not right away). The good news is, he might not have to (especially with how willing Fran is to mix up man and zone). There are a lot of lengthy and athletic wings behind him. Once he's comfortable bringing the ball up the floor against B10 guards, he's going to be able to find spots in the secondary break or against zone to get his shot off. He has a quick release.

If we can't grab an elite talent at PG...my second choice would be a PG from the state of Iowa with a burning desire to demonstrate his chippiness to the Big Ten... And if he can shoot a bit, well, how often games have been lost the last few years because of poor outside shooting?

I know nothing about him but look forward to see what he has "in the tank."

Fran will continue to grind hard on the recruiting trails...

I played a lot of sports, all while being a 6 foot white guy (you'll see a lot of that in Iowa). I also went to school and learned how to read and comprehend the English language while I was at it, something one of us is lacking.

Dad was a Hawkeye, this one wanted badly to be a Hawkeye. Seems to be a very good shooter. 42.3% from deep, 94% free throws, hard not to like those numbers. He's coming and good for him. We'll see how it shakes out.

“I know he really wants me to play the one,” Bohannon said. “When Connor comes in we can switch off one and two like kind of like a combo. He’ll guard the bigger guard, and I’ll guard the smaller guard.”

Bohannon said McCaffery praised him for his defense.

“I think I’m really tough-minded,” Bohannon said. “I know I’m undersized; my knowledge makes up for it. I can get everybody in the right spot and make the right passes.”

Not sure why everyone is not behind this guy. This is exactly the kind of recruit we want. Skilled local both who dreamed to be a hawk. I for one am glad to have one of the Bohannons on the team.

He looks tiny on his highlight video.

Who is this guy ^ and what have you done with Revkev?

Of course this kid wanted to be a Hawkeye, "just like his dad". He didn't have anywhere else to go like his 2 oldest brothers.

Not trying to trash the kid, just being realistic.

So he's not the 2nd coming of Ronnie Lester apparently. Not many are. He wants to be a Hawk. Fran offered. Let's see how it plays out. Not every kid we get on a 13 man roster is going to be All-World. It's OK to be disappointed, I get that some may be no matter who the recruit is, but we don't know what the future holds, so lets see what he does and go from there.

I have no problem voicing my opinion on poor play (or good to great play) for the college kids that get meaningful minutes, but if this kid comes in and handles the ball well, plays defense at least as good as Ogelsby (proverbial white guard comparison) and shoots 42.3% from 3 land and 94% at the line I think we'll take it. For all we know he won't see the floor, that has to be earned. I'm sure he knows that.

I wish him well and hope he continues to prove he's worthy of a scholarship to play DI Basketball at Iowa. How well he does at all of those things will be determined 5 years from now.

Yes, Ulis did say MSU was his second choice.

Thats not the way I remember it but I could be wrong. Didn't Narin commit to MSU before Ulis did anywhere?

I agree it helps to be athletic in general but to say Iowa got "exposed" last year by athleticism is just made up.

Iowa State and MSU shot the lights out from three. That's the reason those games went the way they did. Trice and Naz Long both shot like Steph Curry.

The year before a better more athletic ISU roster struggled to keep up in transition with mostly the same Iowa squad.

Bohanon is going to be a role guy who can come in off the bench and hit threes, Iowa isn't going to rely on him to carry the team.

Fran upgraded the athleticism allot with this years class.

On the Ulis thing. I have no problem saying Iowa finished third for him, or for that matter maybe second, fourth, tenth, we didn't get him.

The interview that folks speak of where Ulis "confirmed" that Michigan State was his second choice? His answer was so much of an, "Ok, whatever" answer that I don't take much from it.

"I really liked Iowa, Coach McCaffery," Ulis said. "I really liked him, guys on the team. But at the end of the day it was between here and Michigan State because I always grew up around Michigan State. I liked (Coach Tom) Izzo. I really wanted to go there, then Kentucky came in, and I just felt like that was the best for me."

So I asked if he would have picked Michigan State over Iowa.

"Most likely," he said.

Most likely. So if Kentucky hadn't come calling would Ulis have picked Michigan State? Most likely. Fair enough, doesn't matter much now, does it. At the end of the day it came down to Kentucky and Michigan State. That is good enough to call third for Iowa. Or is it good enough to say had it come down to Michigan State and Iowa we had a chance?

I don't care.

Six foot (or under) white guys that can play? Stockton, Hornacek, Ernie D, Alford, Craft, Skiles, etc., etc. I have never seen Jason play, but I will not condemn him because he is six foot tall and white. BTW, Troy Skinner was an off guard forced to play point out of necessity. Didn't break down defenses but at least he took care of the ball and they did make the tourney with him at point. Jeff Hornacek was a slow footed walk on at Iowa State and turned out to be, in my opinion, the "Larry Bird" of shooting guards who was like a second point guard on the floor when he played with Stockton. There is more than one way to skin a cat in basketball so give the kid a chance.

Did you really love Brody Boyd's game?

Watching Jordan's video showed a lot of floor moxie. The young man can really shoot and he showed very good passing skills.

I think he is another solid team player who will help this team. Fran doesn't hand out scholarships lightly so I think the coaches feel that Jordan will contribute.

Personally, I want to thank Fran for not kissing Moore's ass. Too many kids let the press and rankings go to their head. Moore is probably a better penetrator and quicker but Bohannon is a lights out shooter with good floor awareness.
