Bohannon Hip Surgery

The crazy part is he waited till almost June to get this done. Had he done this in March, his odds would have been much better to return by November.

I know you have to wait a period of time for hip replacement surgery after receiving your last cortisone shot. Someone with a medical background can chime in and let us know if this applies to other forms of hip surgery as well. That may explain the delay.

Season is at least 20 weeks away, not going to write this coming season as a loss even if Jordan can't go, but the human body is a remarkable machine and anything is possible. As fans we all wish Jordan all the best and hope all goes well.
If Iowa takes a step back this season, and Fran had prior knowledge of this possibly happening and did nothing to add a veteran player or two that he could have recruited to fill the vacant scholarships he'll have a lot of explaining to do.

It's inexcusable that a point and/or combo was not brought in.

Either:
A. Fran is satisfied with his roster as is
B. Fran is out of touch with his player's status and intentions
C. Fran isn't even looking at the transfer/JC
market
D. Fran can't sell his program to a mid major player looking to take a step up
E. A and C
F. All of the above

Bottom line, they made the tourney and won one game last year. That's the minimum expectation this year.

More PT for his kids. If Connor shoots 20% from 3-pt line next year, then it will be a long season.

JBo will be back by November.

He might be. Naz Long for ISU had surgery (on both labrums) in 2015, tried to come back, made it about a month and hung it up for the season. I don't know the severity of his injuries vs. JBo's, but if he does make it back it will be because of a tremendous job by the medical professionals as well as some tremendous rehabbing effort on his part. Feel terrible for any kid who puts forward a lifetime of effort and has it taken away for a bit due to something like this.

Damn! First thought is why wasn't surgery scheduled right after the season ended. Second thought is that finding a grad transfer, was even more important than we thought. Third, I hope CJF and JoeT can play. If they can, we will be OK. If not, o_O

Good luck JBo. Get well soon!

Totally sucks for Jordan
Gutsy young man fighting thru this injury and excelling anyway.
Hope he gets back this year.

He may be back, but thinking he'd be in full form is naive. Naz Long attempted to come back after hip surgery in the summer, played in 8 games and then requested medical redshirt.
It's not Summer. JBo has 6 full months to rehab. But he will be rusty.

And Naz had his surgeries on April 1st and May 7th that summer and was "crazy ahead of schedule" when asked in late May how his rehab was going and his expected recovery was 3 to 5 months, not 5 to 9. But Bohannon is a tough mofo and he will be very determined to come back ASAP. Hope he can be back for this year.

Unfortunately not. I mean who is he going to have to explain his decision too? Certainly not to us, and Barta won't question Fran's decision......

Guards for 2019-20:

Frederick
Toussaint
Wieskamp
McCaffery

Some teams play 4 guard lineups as a base. We have 4 guards total on this roster, and two are freshmen unknowns. This is a disaster and further evidence that this program is veering out of control under McCaffery.

If he doesn’t come back it presents a problem for the following season do you bench a starter or J Bo it will obviously piss someone off.

1. Connor McCaffery // Joe Toussaint

2. CJ Fredrick

3. Joe Weiskamp // Patrick McCaffery

4. Jack Nunge // Cordell Pemsl

5. Luka Garza // Ryan Kriener

What do you guys think our rotation looks like next year, assuming JBO redshirts?
This year we can't worry about 10 deep! We only have 9 guys who can play!
I just added Riley Till! ;)

There is playing time to sell. It’s pretty fluid at the moment. No cliff diving in my future. We might land a player now and J Bo may be ready for conference play. All we can do is the best we can today. My guess is the staff are working the phones.

You people complaining about JBo not having surgery bakc in March. Think about. After a long season he probably thought rest and rehab would help, but also remember he is a student and going through that in middle of semester would be very tough. Give the kid a break for maybe waiting till school and finals are over with. No way can you blame that on Fran. Kid first. GO hawks.

Naz Long's surgery was in May as well, same initially estimated recovery time frame (3-5 months).
He had multiple surgeries on his shoulder(s). Was it both shoulders or 2 surgeries on the same shoulder? And which shoulder did JBo have his surgery on? I have had rotator cuff surgery on both shoulders. My right shoulder needed the full 6 months and then some, but my left one was very strong after 4 months.

What is going on. This just came out from the season or a new injury?

Bohannon will undergo a hip scope on Wednesday at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics. He will be out for an indefinite period of time, and will be reevaluated throughout the summer and fall as he goes through rehab.

He told the Des Moines Register if he isn’t ready by the exhibition season he will probably redshirt and play the 2020-21 season. The recovery time from the surgery will be several months.

Bohannon has been plagued by hip problems the last two years. He sat out of practice for much of the preseason last year and skipped Iowa’s exhibition game, but returned to start all 35 games.

I'm not saying it's too difficult at Iowa, but sometimes it just doesn't work out. Look at it this way...you're a good well-known salesman who sells shirts...you have great shirts that a lot of people would like to have. 3 guys walk into your store and you give them your very best sales pitch, but they all say no because one guy is shopping for pants, one has no money to spend, and the other doesn't really like the shirts. So despite your best efforts, you sold no shirts. The final decision is with the buyers not the sellers.

Look...you can fault Fran for a lot of things (I do too, in fact) but to fault him for this when you really don't know what's been happening behind the scenes is pretty silly. You're getting angry about a premise that you've created and is not based on anything but your own opinion.

I'm angry at a premise I've created? I"m sorry, I thought Fran was responsible for roster management and was the person responsible for having a roster that is at 70% capacity if Bohannon doesn't suit up. Even with Bohannon the roster is only at 75% capacity. Do you think that is a recipe for success in the B1G, especially when one of the available players can't seem to stay off the surgical table and another splits his time playing another sport? If Bohannon is out we have four guards, two of which have never played a minute of college basketball. You're correct, I don't fully know what is going on behind the scenes, but Fran's comments to the press suggest he has never embraced the transfer market even though he himself was a transfer. That seems incredibly stubborn and foolish, especially when a projected starter at guard left the program with a year of eligibility remaining and you've known for a few months that another starter in the backcourt might have to go under the knife and potentially miss the upcoming season. One step forward, two steps back for Iowa Basketball. We can't seem to break that trend.

p.s. your shirt salesman analogy is terrible. Fran isn't going out to recruit people, only to find out some want to play soccer, some don't have the grades and some have no interest. They complete their due diligence, identify needs and go after available BASKETBALL prospects. Jesus, the lengths some will go to justify coaches actions or in this case, inaction. Good riddance.

Ah, well are they even the same surgeries?
No clue, but in the article I read about Naz's surgery he was quoted as saying a recovery period about half of what Bohannon is saying and he had his surgery earlier in the year and still tapped out after the season started. But one thing is for certain, everyone responds differently to things and I certainly would not count Bohannon out of anything.

Long's 2nd surgery was in May so not more than a few weeks earlier if that. And he had multiple surgeries - we might be comparing apples to oranges. I guess we'll find out.

In any case, Fredrick and Toussaint will get plenty of court time to show what they can do. And this probably nixes Patrick's redshirt.

Jeez you're slow...the premise you've created is that he's done nothing to add a transfer. You have absolutely no idea if that's true or not, but you're gong to believe that despite zero evidence for it. Yes, he's said that he typically doesn't like to go the transfer route, but you have NO IDEA of that is the case here or not.

And point of the analogy is that any sales HAVE to have a willing buyer. It's a two way street. Again, you have absolutely no idea if there has been any interest in Iowa (other than the ND transfer who chose Vanderbilt) by any BT-quality PG in the transfer portal. And you have absolutely NO IDEA if there has been "inaction" by the coaching staff on this or not. None.

And I'll throw this quote back at you....Jesus, the lengths some will go to villify coaches actions even when they have no evidence of those actions actually taking place.

Dude ....you DO realize the job of any recruiter, especially a head coach, is to sell his program to recruits and get them to want to come..... right? It's an aspect of his job he doesn't particularly succeed at excessively but it is what separates programs like ours from the ones who contend in this conference. Stop making excuses for him. If Iowa St can attract players to Lames Iowa I just refuse to hear it. Dolph was right....go out and get somebody!

But you do have an idea? The inaction I speak of is based on Fran's own comments, not something I've made up. He hasn't embraced transfers, especially grad transfers. He was clearly interested in some sit and play transfers, but beyond that there isn't much information out there to suggest Iowa has been aggressive in improving their roster this off season that will pay dividends next year. Seems like a huge gamble and mistake to me, we'll have to see how it plays out. Questioning Fran or suggesting he is making a mistake isn't disparaging him or abusing him or attacking him. Criticism and questioning his decisions seems reasonable to me, I don't think I've crossed the line. As for the premise you think I've created, you have any information to suggest Fran has actively gone after grad transfers to replace Moss and potentially Bohannon?
