Bohannon Hip Surgery

Honestly, if he has to redshirt it may be a blessing in disguise. This coming season is already going to be a struggle to make the tourney before potentially losing JBo since we lost Moss and Cook earlier than expected.

But the following season could be pretty good with a senior Garza, senior and fully healthy JBo, junior Joe W assuming he stays, senior and hopefully healthy Pemsl, plus a year of more experience for Joe T, CJ, Nunge, Patrick, and Connor. That’s a pretty decent team. Joe getting a whole season of being the man in the backcourt could hopefully make him realize how good he can be when he doesn’t have to defer to anyone on the team.
When I initially saw the news I thought basically the same thing. Next year would be a struggle though

I don’t want to even mention this, but given we haven’t been blessed with much good news in the basketball program lately.....is it possible we’ve seen the last of Jbo in an Iowa uniform?

Let’s say he’s not ready, sits on the sidelines for a year and watches a young Iowa team struggle. Jbo could carve out a roll anyplace he wanted as a grad transfer. Is it possible he wants to come back and play for a team that can contend for a title?

I certainly hope this isn’t the case but I can’t rule it out. I don’t expect it to happen...he’s such a competitor I think watching us struggle would only push him to be the difference maker for us, but it’s not like we haven’t had bouts of bad luck here.

I believe this video from HC speaks volumes of Fran's recruiting approach. It seems to center around his "vision" for the prospective player(s). Whether they agree or not, it's ultimately a mutual decision whether it will work.

Consistently. Do you want to list all of Fran's recruiting success stories?

You may train salesmen but you don't have a clue. Not sure how your trainees can stand you with such an over-inflated sense of self worth.
Bryce Cartwright
Melsahn Basabe
Roy Marble
Gabe Olaseni
Aaron White
Josh Oglesby
Anthony Clemmons
Adam Woodbury
Mike Gesell
Peter Jok
Tyler Cook
Jordan Bohannon
Ryan Kriener
Cordell Pemsl
Jack Nunge
Luka Garza
CJ Fredrick
Joe Wieskamp
Joe Toussaint

I didn't count his sons even though he is clearly the reason they are here and both were highly regarded recruits.

Still a good chance he'll be back if the surgery goes well. Local Dubuque kid had the same surgery for a labrum tear and was back playing soccer after five months and didn't miss a game. But yes, he'll miss the entire off-season workouts and games. But if he did play them and didn't have surgery, his hip would really be messed up. The thing I worry about is that the surgery may be more complicated since he's been playing with this injury for so long already.

If you consider that JoeW's is a forward we might have three frosh and two soph manning three positions.
That could be a formula for a return to 2017-18 type season.

So I'm hoping this is the last iteration of our line-up for next season.... here goes.

Garza / Kriener
Pemsl / Nunge
Wieskamp / PMac / Till
Fredrick / Wieskamp / Vanderloo
Toussaint / CMac / Vanderloo

Jordan will be back its May folks 21 year old kid competitive 5 months to practice 7 to meaningful games.

When you have Jordan conceding there is a possibility he could redshirt I cannot accept outsider fans medical assessments as absolutely certain.

Hopefully he comes back in time but if not he needs to be healthy to compete at this level at his size and deserves a chance at a great senior season.

As for the rotation without Jordan, whether JoeW drops down to guard or not it still leaves us with 3 frosh and 2 sophs to cover the 3 perimeter positions. Tough deal for Fran and Iowa fans when this was the big crescendo year we have built to for three years..we thought we would be one of the most experienced teams but now back to one of the youngest again.

"A kid I know..." and "I stayed in a Holiday Inn Express..." are about equally qualifying as to understanding Bohannon's issue.

Bohannon has stated that a redshirt is a possibility. There's no reason to think he would have said that if there weren't a significant chance that could be the case.

Why has anyone mentioned hip replacement in this thread? Did I miss something? There’s no way anyone is thinking of hip replacement in JBo unless he has a congenital disease. Hip scopes are fairly specialized surgeries. Not many orthopedic surgeons do them. Only a few in Iowa. Maybe a tear of the labrum?
first off jbo is clearly taking a redshirt year. He wants a year of being healthy. 2nd, this rehab will take longer than we wish for. I'm familiar with it and it's not like a knee scope cleanup. He'll be redshirting. Patrick is redshirting. He needs a year to catch his body up and is doing that. 3rd, Fran is close to signing 2 transfers, 4th, he has one in the bag that will help but replacing jbo is not going to happen. 5th, my absolute perfect prediction is 5th in the big and 2nd or sweet 16 in the tournament. Quote it, count on it.

I thought I read the quote early in the thread that he was likely to redshirt, if ready to play by the exhibition game. If that is accurate, he has a pretty tight window for rehab to play next year.

This definitely leaves us very thin on the perimeter with very little experience or margin for anyone being out or not being able to contribute. I haven't given up on Fran finding a grad transfer, but I am sure not holding my breath. All these developments should have made it a lot easier to sell playing time to potential grad transfer recruits.

Never been as high on JBO as most others.

Probably the best shooter I've seen at Iowa but kind of lacking everywhere else a pg should effect the game.

We'll see what Joe T and Connor can do for a year.

We'll probably take a step back in the short term, although Wieskamp with the ball in his hands all game might be an improvement) but the experience could lead to a great final year for JBO and Luka.

Joe only played SF because our starting 2G was coming back. No reason Joe can’t play SG and there isn’t a huge difference in our system.
Yeah, I have zero concern about Joe playing the 2. He has better handles than Moss and comparable to Jok.

Losing Bo is a big blow, but its an opportunity, too. That's the way life is. CJ and Joe T and the McCaffery boys will all have a chance to step up and contribute to taking his place. You never know. . .

JBo has some time to rehab the hip and get himself back into playing condition. It won't be easy but it can be done. I have a couple of friends who had to do basically the same thing. What you to avoid is hip replacement. If it turns out to be that, then JBo and us have something to worry about.
It cost Naz Mitrou-Long an entire season- he tried to comeback and had discomfort which forced him to shut it down and seek the medical redshirt. Trying to play high level athletics and compete in the B1G is difficult, and to do it without the off season to prepare makes it that much harder. I wish JBo a speedy recovery. On the bright side it keeps him on scholarship to work towards his Master's Degree (if he is forced to redshirt.)

There is no problem with JoeW playing at 2, except PMac would then be the best fit at 3. We don't want any of the 4 bigs playing 3.

Nunge will start. A lot of people about to learn just how good he is.

Recall he started over Garza early their freshman years. He'll be a top 3 scorer for us next year.

So Fran gets a gold star for trying?

This is high major college basketball. Your job is to put a tourney team on the floor. If Prohm doesn’t do that next year it will not be a successful year, and you certainly won’t hear me saying golly gee it’s tough out there recruiting. RECRUITING IS 90% OF THE JOB.
No shite, Scurlock. btw, I think we can all agree Iowa has better doctors than the Klownz.

Wade? I hope you know something nobody else is talking about around here.

Just saw article on a h.s. football senior (Gunnerson). Sounds like he had the same thing as JBO. Labrum and scrape the bone down. I think he was out a year. Hopefully Jordon is not as bad off.

A relative of a player told me that pemsl’s knee is not healing as well as they had hoped

Not sure I'd believe this or not, Pemsl was on the court at home games that I attended shooting jumpers and he didn't look like he was in any discomfort as far as I could see.
