Bohannon Mr. Basketball

If only we had another scholarship. Which we do not have.... Unless someone bales on the team, Another PG would have to come in 2017, and take Connor's scholarship. Which is fine with me. Connor needs to earn his way on to the team. One, he is the coaches kid(nepotism) and needs to prove himself first. And two, to avoid the Rath & Ridicule of the Hawkeye crazies.

That would be for his good, AND the good of the team's. I look at Neal & Alford's kids, what catastrophes. Death threats? Wow... The only way to avoid favoritism, is to let him redshirt a year and "earn his way" on the team. Exactly how Baer has done.... That would keep the hounds from barking. Prove his has earned the scholarship first. Not just hand it to him, and "shine a spotlight" on favoritism.

Am I not right on that one? If Connor turns into Mr Basketball in Iowa or a leading candidate, which he may, that would be a different story. But from what I have seen that award will not be given to him. AJ Green or Joe Wieskamp are probably ahead of him on that for next year.

Speaking of nepotism. It is not legal in Iowa state hires, which McCaffrey is, correct? If this "player union" takes hold, then basketball players would become employees. Thus making it impossible for Connor to receive a scholarship. Is that not correct???
Need someone who knows Iowa labor law for that one.

So if he's in the running for Iowa Mr Basketball then we should give him a scholly, but the fact that he is ranked in the top 150 in his class by pretty much every service means he should walk on, redshirt, and "earn his way on the team"???

Kirk: He was a HUGE disappointment, the last 2 years at UNC. At beginning of 2014, they were touting him as College player of the year. Heck he wasn't even player of his team.
That's what you get for playing for a cheater like Roy Williams.

JUNIOR SEASON (2014-15)

Recipient of UNC’s Dean Smith Most Valuable Player award for the second consecutive season (one of six players to win MVP honors as a sophomore and junior with Lennie Rosenbluth, Billy Cunningham, Michael Jordan, Antawn Jamison and Tyler Hansbrough) • Also named a permanent captain for the second year in row and the defensive player of the year and top scholar-athlete for the third straight year • Fourth player to win defensive award three times (with Derrick Phelps, Brendan Haywood and Marcus Ginyard).

I know you like to just throw out random, not so factual facts, but at least put a little effort in. He has had a rough season this year yes, but that doesn't diminish the career he has had

I would take Paige in a heartbeat. Yes he has had down years, but that kid can ball. Lets not forget he has had some injury issues and I think the last one was a wrist injury which can sometimes be tough to over come.

Bohannon sounds like a sharpshooter. I am hoping he can come in and knock down some 3's. I liked the quote where they said, " he isn't the most athletic player, but he will work harder than anyone." That's what I like to see about incoming recruits and lets face it. This kids older brothers were pretty successful at the Div 1 level. I think he will be just fine.

See? HUGE Disappointment. :);)

Regarding Ellingson & Fleming. We have not really seen these guys perform at close to their best yet IMO.

Look, I played HS basketball (WOW!). When I was a junior, we had a very good, senior laden team. We also played a short bench. Sound familiar? Well, so I was the 4th guy off the bench. i'd go 3-4 games without even playing. Then, when I got to play, all of a sudden the pressure was pretty intense. It felt like an out of body experience. Very difficult to perform well.

The next year, I was the senior and started every game and had a good year.

The point? To play most sports well, especially touch sports, I believe you need to be "comfortable" and familiar with the game you are playing, Being thrust into a game for 5 minutes in front of 15,000 fans is really awkward.

I hope they stick and become great players.

Cook looks to be allot more explosive than White.

Also White had basically no low post game, his offense was all off the dribble.

Cook looks like much more of a typical power forward. Probably closer to Wagner than White but bigger and a higher jumper.

I hope that Tyler Cook is Half the player that Aaron White was for the Hawkeyes.
If he is, then I like the fortunes for Hawkeye Hoops for the next 4 years.
Aaron White was probably the BEST and most frequent DUNKER in Hawkeye history.
That would be a pretty good Role model to follow for Tyler Cook

Its Curt, and a Conference championship this year and a Sweet 16 last year...Not a title but I would love to have both here.

BTW, I typically root against UNC and any Roy Williams team, but Paige is a great student, a very good basketball player and from all accounts a good person. I have no reason to root against him.

This is a good post and so true and at least you played the game of basketball and started in HS 4shur....not many folks can say this even in HS let alone college so you get what's going on when you come off the bench in a competitive basketball game environment....you get what's going on when you become a starter too.

When you said "it's awkward" coming off the bench....spot on. I don't know how people can understand what you are saying if they've never experienced this? Players need playing time, see Jarrod Uhtoff....2nd team AA. Many of these bench players need more rope. Really looking forward to next year's team.

I thought Pemsl deserved Mr Iowa more than Bohannon did this year. Pemsl dominated on both ends of the court....Bohannon was more of just a shooter.

Typical BS / weak reporting from the Gazette. See what actually happened below:

Earlier Monday, Uthoff was named a third-team all-American by USA TODAY, the first of many honors expected to be rolled out by national organizations in the coming days and weeks. The last time Iowa had any player exceed honorable-mention all-American status was when Andre Woolridge was a Basketball Times first-teamer and AP third-teamer in 1997. Before that, you have to go back to Ronnie Lester in 1980.

Umm, No.

We should have, and if Fran was smart, he would have 2 open scholarships coming.

Ellingson's, and Connor's.

Then, get a legit PG and the best athlete you can.

This would be the best course of action, if we are really wanting to field a good team, that is.

If not, and want to continue down "Ho-Hum" lane, they stay the course. Warning: Might get really rocky up ahead.

Well, geez, I didn't know it was that simple. Until I read your post, I was in favor of ho-hum. But you make it sound ... undesirable. Thanks for clearing that up.

Yes. Williams was recruited specifically to be a 1. The other two will play the 2 but will handle the ball as well.

I don't see Bohanan getting significant minutes for a few years.

An experienced PG would be a much bigger need for next year rather than another big IMO. Dale Jones is basically a juco big.

It doesn't seem realistic to think that Bohannon will come in and sit after losing two senior point guards. The most likely scenario seems he and Williams splitting time next season. You don't necessarily need size at point guard and I don't see where that works against Bohannon. I don't recall Fran ever saying that he recruited Williams specifically to play the point. When asked about what position he would play he said he would learn point guard which fit an immediate need with a player without a natural position.

A 5th year transfer pg might seem ideal but I don't see it happening. Next season seems all about development and our young players at the point will need seasoning. If a scholarship opens I expect it to go to Baer as IMO it should.

I don't see Fleming as a PG due to lack of quickness. I also question whether he can defend. It will be interesting to see what unfolds, as Ellingson and Fleming appear to be the same player, with Fleming having better handles I think.

If Moss and Williams are 1-2 next year + Bohannon in the mix, I don't know where those guys fit in with Jok, Uhl, Baer, Jones, and Hutton at 3-4 spots or slide Jok to 2. I see some potential PT for 1 guy, but not both as a limited minute reserve 2. Maybe Fleming was given this year to acclimate, work on his game and improve in the offseason for an audition as a backup 1? Also interested to see if the Uhl as a 5 experiment continues or if he returns to a more wing forward type role.

No one said Flemming will be a pg. Lots of teams just have "guards" that share ballhandling rather than a true 1.

Second, "Ellingson and Flemming appear to be the same player"? That just blows my mind. Im mean, what are you watching?

I think Jordan Bohannon is going to surprise people and I think he'll be a starter by the middle of the season next year. Best of all the Bohannons. Cook will also be in the rotation, and Pemsl will see his minutes. First year Cordell's been healthy and he's getting used to playing with a rod in his femur. He'll keep getting quicker. Kreiner may redshirt, but a year or two in the system and he could be a real surprise. I think next year will definitely be a transitional year. A lot of talent, but who is ready to step up?

I actually doubt he will be as productive as White or as good of a player. Just saying hes more athletic/ different player.

People think athleticism equals productivity and it doesn't, and I was certainly not saying that.

As far as best dunker? Not even close. Most frequent, possibly.

Define "sit"

Theres to many older guards in front of him to get much playing time.

He will probably get some minutes if he can be an effective 3pt shooter.

Williams will be the primary one if we don't get a transfer.

Sounds like when people were predicting Flemming to start last summer.

I give it about the same probability of happening.

Hey, I loved Doug Thomas and was the game that you Linked.
That being said, he didn't get as Many Dunks, points or rebounds as
Whitey did, at Iowa.

#goHawks
You said Whitey was "best" dunker.... Whitey never accomplished dunks like Thomas did. Hell, even Utah has had better dunks than Whitey ever did. Just because NinjaGinga had more dunks, doesn't equate to better dunks. :D

I think where we differ you don't see Bohannon in the mix at point guard and I do. Assuming we keep Ellingson and/or Fleming we will have support off the bench for 3-point shooting and I expect both those players to get better if they stick around. Whether Bohannon or Williams starts they can't carry the load at point alone. Not thrilled with Fran for getting us to the point where we have to count on a freshman and inexperience but but we will have to live with it.

So what's the difference between Ellingson and Bohannon's game? I haven't seen Bohannon play at all this year. He seems like a sharpshooter like Ellingson was supposed to be but does he bring anything else?

Thomas is another good example of how athleticism and basketball ability aren't the same thing.

He was exciting to watch dunk though.

Let's hope Tyler Cook is Doug Thomas with some better skills and instincts for the game.

He's quicker with a better handle and probably a better shooter.

Basically watch video and see for yourself.

I get sick of the lazy comparing of all white guys to each other.

Would we be asking how he compares to Ellingson if they weren't both white?

Yes this is where we differ.

I don't see Fran going with the younger player if he has other options just based on history.

I think JB will eventually be solid.

Tyler Cook is a significantly better basketball prospect than Doug Thomas ever was.

It has nothing to do with them both being white. I ask because I've only seen short clips and they both seem like similar players. Ellingson looked quick against high school competition, too.

I don't know, what are you watching? Neither play, so same player. When neither guy is good enough to get off the bench, what are you going to evaluate? Ok, you are right, in pre-game warm up's, Ellingson is shooting is shooting 45% from 3 and Fleming 38%. Fleming is a much better towel waver during games and is 95% on fist bumps vs,. Ellingson's 82%.

Please enlighten me with your supreme insight.

I won't be the one slinging the "crap", but it's coming. You'd be a fool to think differently. Especially from this fan base.

As for the scholarship, I haven't seen him play enough. The title game I am not wanting to count, as everyone played terrible. Worst 4A championship game I can recall watching. I certainly hope he is a much better player. Nobody on the court looked to deserve a major D1 scholarship.
