Bottom line, this program has plateaued unless we significantly upgrade recruiting.

Look what Tennessee Chattanooga did. Brought in four transfers from other programs and should have beat Illinois. I am not saying bring in that many players but maybe one or two could help this program immensely.

Face it, each year we have a couple nice players, but no one else would start for any other BIG Ten team except Northwestern. To go to the next level, we need to get the occasional top 50 recruit along with several in the top 100. Our recruiting has been a C- over the years. This was the year to make a run, get some positive national attention, and possibly attract higher caliber recruits. But instead, WE PISSED DOWN OUR F’N LEG! So, we will continue to be mired in mediocrity until recruiting changes.

Fran has always needed top flight point guards who have the ability to penetrate and bend a defense then dish for lot of baskets. This type of point guard can also get a good shot off whenever they need to late in the shot clock. They can shoot well from long range but the other part of their game is probably more important.

Now I have heard they may have a young man coming in who has those skills. I hope so for the program. Can you imagine Fran's offense the last 12 years with some really top point guards? And if this type of player is a defensive stopper then all the better.

Creighton should NEVER be more athletic than Iowa....yet they have been for 25 straight years...and don't even try arguing with this fact. Iowa's recruiting philosophy....much like in Football....is NOT "next level" thinking.

Yeah but the Hawks could start recruiting like Duke, and Fran could start coaching like Krzyzewski, and you'd still have this weird, angry Roy Fuchs persona. Only it would make even less sense than it does today. So is that what you really want?
I’m believing he’s actually a cyclone fan….which tells you what he wants.

You mean all the best we can do is Big Ten Tournament champions? I'll take it! Schools like Kentucky, Baylor, etc. are probably saying the same thing. Fire their coaches! Time to move on. Mediocrity!

Major over exaggeration.

But yes, were likely to be frauds or just ignored lol

Our guys just won 26 games, the second most in school history, they won the B10 tournament (apparently against teams with way more talent) and that’s your take……wow

I don't know if this fits or not but is part of Iowa's lack of success in the tournament due to not having a true "alpha". They do a great job of sharing the ball and getting the ball to who is hot, but have they really had someone that has had the mentality of I am going to take over this game? Garza to some extent.

What are you doing to help attract those top 50 recruits Roy? Have you ponied up some NIL money? If not, then you are part of the problem. I am sure your attitude towards the current players will help🤣.

A tie for fourth in the league and winning the B10 Tournament does not qualify for mediocrity. I would like a I see some success in the NCAA tournament as well, but I am not going to denigrate what the players and coaches have accomplished until that happens.
Fact of the matter is a good season is essentially erased by a one-and-done in the NCAA tourney. Losing to Richmond is what will stick.

Now, people will remember how good Keegan Murray was, but, that thought quickly transitions into "oh yeah man, that was the year we were the 5 seed and lost to 12 seed Richmond in the first game."

Coaching changes*** Coaching is our problem. We had the players to be successful numerous years to only fail due to our coaching.

One example, it is well known that Duke was able to get Corey Maggette due to a booster giving his mom a 6 figure job in the Durham area. Krzyzewski is one of the top 5 dirtiest recruiters along with Calipari, Billy Donovan(when at Florida), Pitino and Self.

Recruiting to Iowa is difficult. Always has been and always will be.
But not impossible. Even Dr. Tom got two McDs AAs (3 if you count the Sam Okey transfer) and a few other top rated players, like Dean Oliver, Ricky Davis, and Joey Range. Dr. Tom also had his fair share of bad luck with the Chris Street tragedy, Settles’s back issues, etc.

I would also argue the B1G Ten was a lot tougher back then, with the conference getting nine different teams into the Final Four during Davis’s Iowa tenure, which included Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Michigan State, Ohio State, and Minnesota. That doesn’t include those Purdue teams of the mid-90s with Big Dog Robinson. Plus, you played everyone in the conference twice, and outside of Northwestern and Wisconsin, there weren’t a lot of cupcakes.

The point is as much as Dr. Tom was maligned for average to above average results, especially in recruiting, he faced a lot tougher challenges in the conference IMO. That’s not to say Fran has a cake walk, but every year you play some of the top teams in the conference just once and have a lot more cupcakes to feast on. Plus, it’s been a long time since the B1G Ten had a serious national championship contender. That wasn’t the case in the late ‘80s and throughout most of the ‘90s.

The bottom line is yes, Iowa is capable of more. Roy is correct in that the problem isn’t that Fran gets no good players, because he obviously does. The problem is there is such a huge drop off in talent from the 2-3 core players that are stars or solid P5 players to the supporting cast that are either Missouri Valley level or extremely young and not yet ready for prime time. I mean, it’s nice Fran chases so many 5-stars and gets a few on campus, but he has yet to land even one in thirteen years. As a result, I think he misses out on a lot of 4-star/top 100-125 players and has to resort to offering fallback fallback players like Brady Ellingson, or Dom Uhl, or Maishe Dailey, or Josh O, etc. etc. And that is really what’s holding this program back from reaching that ever elusive “next level” that (e.g.) Fred Hoiberg had going in Ames. That, and Fran’s either blatant refusal or plain inability to make good use of the portal and JUCO ranks. Giving Austin Ash a scholly is a feel-good story, but c’mon, that scholly should have gone to a transfer or JUCO big man that could have filled the hole left by Nunge.

That’s what’s so damn frustrating to a lot of us. We had a once-in-a-lifetime player in Luka Garza for four years, Weezy for three, and a future lottery pick in Keegan Murray, and Fran still couldn’t find a decent point guard and transfer or two to fill in areas of weakness. Instead, we get Connor at the 4 ahead of Keegan all of last year and a scholly that should have not gone to a walk-on who was never going to give the team any meaningful minutes. I’m sorry, but that’s just not acceptable.

I must be crazy because this is one of the most athletic teams we’ve had. You can’t tell me the Murrays, Joe, Ulis, Sandfort, Perkins, etc aren’t athletes!

If you can't beat 'em, join 'em

Luckily the Murray’s wanted to be Hawkeyes like their dad. I’m guessing the starting lineup without them this year would have been.
Toussaint
JBo
Connor
Patrick
Rebraca

You plateaued after finishing 4th grade.
142 losses in the past 10 years is mediocrity personified!
And your ray of sunshine opinions really help. Please find a new team to bitch about or just stop bitching all the time. It is past old.

spot on post
Losing Nunge really hurt the team and Fran not getting the kid from Minnesota in the transfer portal was the dagger. Add in Iowa is weak at the point guard position not being able to defend and create a shot are the two main reasons Iowa struggles in the tourney compared to the athleticism of the teams I’m watching in the tourney. Richmond’s pg destroyed Iowa on both ends of the court. Yeah, Richmond. It gets old seeing the team Iowa is playing always have better guards than Iowa.

need to upgrade assistant coaches, let's be honest nobody's looking to hire sherman dillard away
Add in Speraw. There is a reason he wasn’t seiected by Fran to be the head coach against Minnesota when Fran was out due to Covid and he has head coaching experience. It’s time for Fran to bring in a recruiting assistant and defensive specialist. If Fran leaves, Iowa should talk to the Wisconsin assistant that player at Iowa, Dean Oliver.

Roster management has been crap at times, not getting a true big is nuts after having Garza and watching all these tournament teams trot out decent pg's while Iowa struggles with guard play.

Have you ever seen this line up….Keegan, Kris, Perkins, Joe T, and Ulis? Fran won’t play an all black line up for some reason. Always has to play one or both of his kids. He is blinded by nepotism. Play your best athletes.

There are times Joe and Ulis shouldn’t be near the floor. With that said I liked the depth and energy they provided. It worked!

It is insane that a McCaffery has to be on the court almost all the time.
