bowl predictions

"bring on bama" used to be a sarcastic post in recent past after games in which we struggled to put away a sdsu or isu type team
with lester people are saying this seriously. mind blown.

That would just be another reason for people to not consider Iowa. Be real cute to force a player to play and have his knee blowout destroying his NFL draft for a meaningless exhibition game.
With this thinking why would he play the last two or three games and take a chance of injury?

Lower tier bowl games are as meaningless now as they were before the 12 team playoff. Some fans will still watch because it's that time of year and it's what they do. Some bowls will go away, but that's been the case for decades.
Players will continue to opt out or play. They are professionals and it's a professional business decision to play or not play depending on the effect it could have on their future career.

Who honestly cares
Curious why 70,000 are still showing up for games like NW and Wisconsin if no one cares? Crowd went nuts in the Wisc. game. Did not mean a damn thing to anyone? Did you see the players after?

The college football playoffs will be the death of college football. College football was better before BCS crap and now the playoffs.
multiple high level bowl games on January 1 were the highlight of the football season with the teams fighting for their spot in the top 10 and maybe even 3 or 4 battling for the AP and UPI titles.

No shit.

I mean, fvck Proctor, but come on mro. Not cool.
Bingo. It's one thing to root against the kid, or even not wishing him success. But a career-altering injury is a bit uncalled for.

That said, Proctor has been rather underwhelming at AL. He's not bad enough to lose his starting role, but he's shown no indication he's anywhere near good enough to be a first-round draft pick. He'll be lucky to go in the second day. There's a realistic chance he goes undrafted.

Not for exhibition bowl games. That is what any non-CFP bowl game is.
Since when do exhibition games count as part of your record?

Also, pro players are forced to play in actual exhibition games, so if that’s how college kids want to roll with getting paid then they have to accept the consequences.

0lenty of empty seats for plenty of games

Take away tailgating and alcohol and you would see a big reason. Kinnick is Iowa’s version of Wrigley Field

The backups and dudes trying to make the team play in NFL preseason games. Mahomes ain't playing anywhere close to most of the downs in preseason.

About 10% of the plays if that. And he has already banked his money. KJ has not.
I get what you're saying.

I'm just not someone you're going to convince otherwise on this topic.

IMO, if kids want to get paid big bucks on top of their FREE education/room/board then they need to play the games.

For the record, I'm completely against "paying" college athletes anything more than a capped 'modest per diem' every semester, say between $5K an $50K with the exact amount dependent on the school, the sport and/or whether they're a starter/major contributor.

Current NIL is destroying what makes college sports unique and drives fans passion and support.

The kids are becoming mercenaries now...at least those with the high-end skills/talent.

They don't show any loyalty to the school who's invested in them...they'll skip town for a NIL offer that's $75k more a year.

If that is a kid moving from a low-major/G5 program to a high major/P4 program I could understand, but when they are just going from Minnesota to Colorado or Syracuse to Auburn, that's stupid.

On top of that, now a kid shouldn't be expected to play unless it's a playoff game for a chance to win a national championship??

You typically don't see kids who aren't projected to be 1st/2nd/3rd round picks skipping the bowl games.

Those kids use it to showcase their talent, upgrade their projection and hopefully get an invite to the combine.

Injuries happen whether it's a regular season game or a bowl game.

He/his family can take out an insurance policy if it worries them so much.

In other words, suck it up buttercup.

The landscape has changed whether people like it or not. KJ, Harris, Jackson, and Higgins would be wise not to play in a bowl game, as they all have futures playing on Sunday. They would be silly to forego professional money to appease people watching who adapt poorly to change.

I tend to agree. I think the Congrove Computer Rankings would be better than the CFP committee (and more objective and accounts for SOS). Optimally, I think it should be a pure playoff of the, currently, 9 FBS conference champions.

That way conference championships really matter, and there would still be plenty of great bowl games.

None of that will ever happen. $

Assuming Milroe plays the game, it really would be a tall task for the defense to contain him. He put up over 100 rushing yards alone against Georgia. I still want to see it though.
It would be an interesting case study for sure.

You have a first-year staff at Alabama, so you're trying to establish a culture, but at the same time they have a countless number of draft prospects, including Milroe.

My guess is it turns out like the Tennessee game, where they had a bunch of opt-outs but still had f***ing 5 star studs waiting in the wings who just put Phil's defense to shame, and our OL shows its true colors once again against a top tier program and we lose like 35-10.

I honestly think if the matchup happened, Bama would see defects because it's below what they're used to, and Iowa actually wouldn't because it's an opportunity to play a top tier team.

KJ might see this as an opportunity to show scouts what he can do against an elite CFB program, as he only had an average game against OSU mainly thanks to some garbage time yards and a score.

I wouldn't be opposed to KF being forced out of his comfort zone once again, having to gameplan for one of THE top programs in the country, and further showing why he's not ever going to get Iowa over the hump in his remaining time here.

So you are for them skipping the spring game, it's meaningless as well? Or maybe once they are no longer in playoff contention they can just opt out to avoid injury, the bowl games are meaningless. So after 2 losses...

The rule would apply to all schools, I don't see it causing players to avoid if everyone has to follow the same rules.

I disagree. Americans have an insatiable appetite for football. The bowl game ratings may come down some with the advent of the 12 team playoff, but they'll still far outpace any other sports broadcasts not named the NFL.
Not if the stars opt out of playing. Nothing like a bowl game of 2s and 3s.
