Brands Interview

Q. What has Marinelli shown you in the time he's been on campus and in what way will he start the season out?
TOM BRANDS: Marinelli likes to wrestle hard. He likes to wrestle with a big motor. He prides himself in that. He's very hard on himself. He wants to be the best all the time. That's a quality that's not lost on me or something that he strives for. That's not lost on me. I can relate to that, being hard on yourself and being a perfectionist. And those are good things, and we'll see where he's at this weekend. He'll be wrestling in the Grand View Open along with the rest of our freshmen, and we'll see. And our timeline with him is see how he goes and make progress and then make the decision. I like where he's at in his thought process, and I'm reading his mind, but I'm also talking to him and I have a pulse on him as well. There's just little signs where he's kind of maybe gone more toward this might really happen this year. This isn't just something where we're going to talk about it. So giddy up, giddy up and get going. It's like things in his locker, how he talks, how he's talking to the rest of our coaching staff, things you're hearing, good and positive.

Man. Tom took some shots at everyone not named Gilman in that video. Kind of plays into the belief that Iowa is rigid in the sense that there's only one kind of guy they truly like...guys like them. Need to be willing to embrace all different types, not just declare the "machines" as the leaders. And I say this as someone who's favorite current Hawkeye is Gilman!

I was saying to someone the other day that a problem I'm noticing more and more is that we have too many guys on our teams doing inferior Metcalf impressions on the mat. Gilman can do it. It looks like Marinelli can do it, too. But Sorenson wrestles that style and he doesn't put up the kind of bonus we need. We need to have guys that can be more dynamic. Kemerer looks like he has that ability. Brooks, frustrating as he is, definitely wrestles his own style. I think Kaleb Young has the potential to be that kind of dynamic scorer if he can figure it out; he's got more athleticism then most on our team.

But we need to be willing to embrace those guys. It can't always just be "so-and-so does his own thing, but our leader is the Gilman type."

I think you're overthinking this one. Gilman is the leader, because he's the leader. Not because he wrestles like the Brands Brothers

I've seen court reporters change the record too because they knew the judge said something that shouldn't be reported.....just sayin.. ;-)

Maybe. It just seems like the guys that Tom, at least, heaps praise on consistently are the guys that are "like him". I'm just a guy on the internet who's a big Hawkeye fan, I'm just saying what I see and hear, and how it may play into the reputation Iowa is portrayed as having with some recruits. I mean, look at Spencer Lee. We got him and Gavin, two monster recruits, but he even talked about the negative perception of Iowa that had to be overcome.

A thought just hit me (and it hurt a bit), but the Iowa guys talk about dominating and breaking opponents and the PSU guys talk about fun. Has anyone ever heard Cal talk about a leader? They don't seem to give much priority.
Not sure what any of this means, but it just struck me as interesting.

Reading between the lines, it sure sounds like a good possibility that Marinelli wrestles as a true fr. Seems like that would make sense, with #1's Gilman and Clark there for their last year, and giving Iowa a better shot at team title. Marinelli could the RS the following year.

Cael has really stressed Retherford's role as the team leader even last year as just a sophomore. He's stated a few times that they redshirted him 2 years ago so he would overlap with their talented 2014 class an extra year.

Thanks for the update. I don't hear as much Cael comments as I do from Brands.

Vak you say we have to many guys doing bad Metcalf impressions without the point scoring. The only guy that I can think of that does anything like that on our team it Brandon. He's fundamentally sound and tough to score on but doesn't get a ton of bonus point wins.

I can't think of another starter that does that. Last year Gillman didn't turn a lot of guys but was a takedown machine. Clark sometimes takes a little time to get going, but has turned into a pretty tough guy on top that can turn guys. He has a wide arsenal on takedowns from his feet. His defense is definitely not Metcalf like, with how much he lets guys get to his legs. Grothus and co at 141 certainly weren't doing any Metcalf impressions. Neither was Cooper. Maybe Rhodes had a little bit of the rugged tough guy thing going absent the scoring. Alex Meyer has wrestled one Metcalf type match that I've ever seen. I don't recall ever seeing Brent get himself in a whole in the first period just to make his comeback exciting. Brooks wrestles a much more varied style than Brent did, with some of his Greco influence and his suicide turns. If ever there was a guy that I wish we could've gotten one more year out of it was Nathan Burak, he looked great last year and developed very well in the Hawkeye system. I can't really think of anyone recently who improved more than he did in his time in the room. I didn't think his style was a poor man's Metcalf though. Sammy definitely not Brent-like.

So other than Brandon who are we talking about?

Brands is just stating a fact. Gilman is the clear leader on the team. I've only been to one practice this year (before the Wisconsin game), but it was very apparent that Gilman is the team leader.

Then you missed the Metcalf vs Jenkins match at CHA.

My comment was tongue in cheek Pump. I was alluding to Meyer's knack of coming out super slow and getting down quite often only to turn it on late. It's been implied (also tongue in cheek) that Meyer does is on purpose just to generate excitement. Bubba was just really, really good. Just ask "THE MAGIC MAN". (still the worst wrestling nickname ever) "Leaping" Lanny Poffo has a cooler nickname than DT.

Anyone know where this video lives now? Doesn't seem to be available any longer and was hoping to watch it.

Thanks.

The Brands video in it's entirety is owned by the U of I and you have to sign up for Hawkeyes All-Access.

well then whejoe beat me to it! I will have more clips available soon. Stay tuned for those who missed it in the first run

That can't be Tom Brands. He was smiling, laughing and joking. Who is this imposter? (yes, it's sarcasm).

What would Cory Clark's tag read?

Brands: "Clark? His would read, "How many blonds does it take to screw in a lightbulb."

My question: Is coach bagging on CC for having womens on da brain or calling him a ditzy blond?

I took it as he was calling Clark a jokester
