Just wondering everyone's thoughts on Cody Brewer joining the NWLC? They have a lot of talent with Nico, Gomez, Frank, and now Brewer they might have overtaken the HWC as the premiere lightweight RTC. Kinda sucky news

As long as the Brands are there, HWC will be very tough to beat at the lower weights.

Well, the HWC still has Terry Brands who is regarded by many as the best lightweight coach in the country.

What success have any of their lightweights had on the world team? Oh wait, thats right, it was Hawkeye vs. (now former) Hawkeye, and current Hawkeye won that battle

I am not sure the 3rd placed 133lber from last year is shifting anything anywhere. It sounded like they were going after Garrett. I would assume that this news means they missed on him. Much rather them have Brewer than Garrett.

I assume Brewer will be going 61kg for the next few non-Olympic years. While I think he will be good I have a feeling that 61kg is going to belong to Tyler Graff for the next few years.

I'm not saying Iowa is dog poop guys, but come on. For the last few years we have been able to hang out hat on having the best lightweight club in the country. I'm just pointing out that NLWC has quality and quantity.

Again not stating the sky is following, but Ramos leaving left a hole in talent for the freestyle club. I'm sure Gilman will join after this season, but we need to start stocking up on some talent. Maybe I'm alone in that thinking.

Maybe Lee and Teasdale will help.

I don't think adding Brewer is a game changer, but I do wish the HWC would try to go out and get quality outside wrestlers. Would be great practice partners for the other HWC members and current Hawkeye wrestlers. We may be able to learn something from those guys. I realize that TNT primarily do it for the benefit of former Hawkeyes, but I think it would be a win-win to get some of these outside guys. We could afford to see some new/different attitude and technique in the room.

Well, apparently in the not-distant past there were current HWC wrestler(s) who didn't even want former Hawkeyes as competition, let alone outsiders. Maybe now that obstacle is removed, you might see the HWC open up, unless other HWC members feel the same way as the one who just left.

The HWC has a lot of funding but is still limited in how many athletes they can sponsor. Currently, the focus is on giving Iowa alumni a place to continue their careers.

It's not like the Iowa wrestling room is completely closed off from visitors. There are always guys from other clubs or regions (Joey McKenna last year for example) who come visit and train. Currently, with limited dollars to hand out, I agree with the emphasis on giving Iowa guys preference.

When is the last time the HWC had a medalist at the World Championship or Olympic Games?

I'm not trying to make a point or implying anything I actually don't know the answer. Is it Bill Zadick as a world champ in 06? I'm not sure if he was training at HWC or the OTC.

Joe Williams or Lincoln Mac maybe?

This is why the biggest impact we can have as fans is donating to the HWC. Its important to show up at Carver and cheer, and keep Iowa City the best place in the country to wrestle. I think its way more important for the funds to be in place to make sure that Iowa City is the best place in the country to train.
The banquet is Friday. There are always a lot of nice items to bid on.

Senior Level? Should have specified

Both Bill and Mike Zadick won medals in 2006.

Bill is the Hawkeye to win a world gold
Mike won a silver
Joe WIlliams won a bronze in 05.

Non-Sr level, Gilman won a Junior bronze. Stoll is also a Junior bronze medalist, but that was in high school. McDonough won a University World bronze as well

However, Bill Zadick was not training with the HWC in 2006, if that is what the question was getting at. He was at the OTC. Mike was in Iowa City. I don't know about Joe Williams.

So this is a thing now? Clubs recruiting non alums to wrestle for them?
NLWC must have a big bank roll for all those wrestlers.
I always thought clubs were meant for alumni. Leave it to psu to start this up. smh.
They already have two international guys as well who did not go to psu (the gold medalist from Japan and Gomez of Cuba)
Maybe HWC should bring in Sadulaev from Russia

Good thing Dan Dennis filled that vacuum before Tony & his ego left.

And I love Dan, but he's been through a ton. How much longer is his body going to last?

I'm going to guess the odds of Ramos making the 2020 team is better than Dennis. The HWC has done it before I don't see the problem in going out and getting talent. Maybe not Brewer specifically, but I'm sure there are other guys.

I'd bet on Gilman, Clark and Lee for 2020 before I bet on Dennis or Ramos. This is assuming even odds of course.

Which is fine, my point is I think we should have people in the room making guys like Lee and Gilman better. Metcalf is only committed to Iowa for one more year and it sounds like he is starting to progress toward coaching. Dennis isn't going another cycle so the HWC pretty much has Telford, Nathan Burak, McDonough, and Gilman as guys competing full time in the 2020 cycle. Am I really that crazy for wanting another body or two?

Ed Ruth, Jordan Oliver - ASU

Tervel D - Ohio RTC

Etc

Surprised clubs don't go after Eastern Bloc guys to help train our guys - even a modest salary/stipend would look good to guys from some of those dirt-poor countries. Hell, US gymnastics only became the best in the world when Bela Karoly and his wife moved out of Romania to Houston.

You aren't crazy at all, I'm with you 100%. I was just speaking to who we send in 2020.

When was this not a thing? In addition to the ones CMT mentioned ... Jake Herbert, Jimmy Kennedy, BJ Futrell, Dave Habat, and JT Felix are sponsored athletes at the Michigan RTC. Wynn Michalak and Boris Nabachkov are at the Illinois RTC. Nate Carr Jr. is at Cornell. Jason Chamberlain and Austin Trotman are at Nebraska. Josh Kindig is at North Carolina. None of those guys went to those colleges.

And the Japanese gold medalist you're talking about has been retired since 2012. He's been coaching at the NLWC, not competing. And "Gomez of Cuba" prefers to be called "Gomez of Puerto Rico."

While the Hawks may be THE place to go for a lightweight, money still does talk. It sounds like the NLWC has a lot of money and that can shift the power pretty quickly.

TnT will always attract kids with big dreams and that I do not think will change. The loyalty the HWC shows to Hawkeyes is remarkable in a world that doesn't seem to value integrity and the lofty principles we were raised with.

Why are people complaining that we need to seek wrestlers from outside programs to come to Iowa to be training partners?

For the next Olympic cycle we will have all of the following potentially training in Iowa City:

Gilman (currently #1 ranked NCAA125 lber)
Clark (currently #1 ranked NCAA133 lber)
Matt McDonough (2x NCAA champ, 3x finalist, university world medalist)
Spencer Lee (Jr World champ, top high school prospect among all weight classes in the high school class of 2017.)
Daniel Dennis (U.S. Olympian at 57kg)

A large number of other light weight recruits - Renteria, Meija, Teasdale, Wagner

Not to mention, Tom and Terry Brands as coaches/training partners.

I do not understand why anyone is complaining about the HWC not having enough light weights. We have weight classes to improve on, but the light weights are not it.

Ok. Point proven.
My next question would be than where are the non alums at the HWC?
Why don't we do this?

See HAWKMANS post, HWC does not have bottomless pocket$. Even the guys in the HWC now get additional sponsorships from Titan Mercury etc to make it work financially.

Thanks, I knew it had been awhile. If Bill was training at the OTC, that would make Mike the last wrestler training at the HWC to medal at the senior level. Hard to believe it has been a decade.

Hope Dan Dennis gets it turned around in Rio!

IIRC Burak's brother was part of the HWC for awhile. They have a female wrestler as well, whose name is escaping me.

It's money well spent.
