I remember a game at Minnesota's new stadium in recent years that the exact same thing occurred, and I want to say it was in a season where they'd already canned their head coach.
I want to say there was some hijinks and chicanery involved with it being icy, like they had a cover for the field prior but removed it knowing it would ice up after the storm.

lol, Lambeau Field during the cold Wisconsin winters I couldn’t imagine playing anyone on that service on or before December 31
Too lazy to find a link, but no playing surface has or ever will be as bad as the Penn State- LSU Cap One Bowl in Jan 2010.
That was a mockery of football. The Pinstripe Bowl was equally as ridiculous, just not as messy.
I'm happy Iowa won the Pinstripe Bowl but playing football on an unheated baseball field in the middle of winter is just silly. You have to wonder why the B1G wants to be a part of that?
yep, in 2010, before the TCF field had heating coils; the field was frozen; the Iowa/MN game was the Saturday after Thanksgiving, the temp was in the 20's and Iowa did not look like it wanted to be there
