*****Maryland vs Iowa Game Thread*****

They figured out how to come back, but could nevér get the big momentum bucket when the game situation dictated. Whenever they had those moments they reverted back to their failed game plan.

I actually think that's on the players. As usual, in the moment to step up nearly everyone chooses to step aside. That's been a big issue, and it continues to be. Sure, use your offense, but players have to create shots through it. If nobody can create, you try to pass.

Standing looking for a pass when you haven't even used a dribble will get you nowhere. It's looking for a turnover.

Whatever they are being coached to do, it got them a lot of shots under the basket or within a few feet. Coach can't make that shot for them. I mean it should at least be on the rim somewhere, right? Make those shots and you may very well win the game---even after Maryland couldn't miss in the first half.

*Winning the second half is a positive takeaway because it really looked like this was going to be an embarrassing score after one half. Play consistently and make a few bunnies they win a big game.

*A coach in her first year, a team without experience. Seems a recipe for what we saw today.

*Maybe easier now to make some hard decisions. ???
I think a big part of this is we have several upperclass players who have always been "complimentary" players with CC22 and Kmart leading the way. I think Syd is a good example. She's a really good complimentary player, and she does the little things, but she's not a star. Neither are any of the other junior or senior players. They're all role players. Hannah is the closest but she still has holes in her game against really good players, like we see on all the top teams in the league. Down the road, maybe Guyton, Heiden, Deal, Houston, Hays, we'll see, but there are no 1st team all B1G players on this squad.

This team is the bad news bears. I was grateful I was watching from my living room vs Bluder having to sit there and watch. Bad passing, bad shooting, bad defense at times. Just bad.

The good:
The game is over.

Possibly could say Olson finally hitting a few outside shots

The bad:
Jensen's stupid post feed offense. It needs to be burned. It's like a contest to see who can make the worst post pass and the worst part is we don't even have a dominant post player to warrant trying to run the offense through. It's an exercise in standing around, stand around and make awful entry passes or stand at the top of the circle and make lazy wing passes for turnovers. This offense is stagnant. Also as I saw others mention there is no leadership at all by anyone on this team. I don't know if Jensen was always good cop and let Bluder be bad cop but she better figure out how to do some bad cop because this team needs it. She needs to quit cheerleading and start coaching. Smiles, clapping and pats on the back don't win games. Also as others mentioned she doesn't seem to have any idea what she wants to use for rotations, it's just random groups of players going in and out.

Stuelke was awful. Throwing up shots, hitting the bottom of the back board. She can't shoot jumpers and layups not looking good either. It looked like one of those Angel Reese brick reels.

Olson is really a poor passer, a lot of bad passes and missed layups.

Feuerback had some spots of good defense but did nothing otherwise and some awful post passes per her usual.

Affolter bad passing as well, one was right after a timeout and she the turns it over with a bad post pass. Jensen's play after every timeout is forced the post. She did hit a few shots but joined the layup brick brigade.

McCabe is there to hit open 3s and she missed open 3s.

Stremlow hustles but terrible passes all over the place and no threat offensively, not seeing the benefit.

AOG ineffective vs anyone with some athletic ability on offense and defense.

I don't know what it is but this team is always playing like they are over thinking everything. Nothing is flowing naturally. It's like they are so locked into running everything through the post they can't do anything else. There are times they don't seem to understand even basics. When people get the ball it's panic mode all over the place. Spacing is bad at times, they pass up good shots for bad shots. It's ugly basketball, very ugly half court basketball. I miss the motion and ball movement with people taking confident open shots and getting fast break points. Standing around, no motion, bad passing, bad/forced shots, no fast breaks= ugly basketball.

CC getting this group to the finals 2 times is way more impressive than winning a title on a loaded team. Kate and Gabbie obviously helped too but you get my point.

pretty much spot on
We need Heiden to grow up quickly. She needs way more minutes, and even AJE needs more than OGrady.
More Guyton, less Fuerbach
Was afraid we would see this kind of drop off year one after CC. It's coming to fruition.

The post feed mandate needs to be reduced. ‘Well we fed the post in the past’, well this isn’t the past. There isn’t another player on offense who occupies at least 1 to 1.5 players like the past, the double can get to the post quicker because they are 2’ closer to the post than in the past, when the post feed is part of the flow of the offense rather than the primary focus of the offense good things will happen and maybe the backboard won’t get 3-5 blocked shots a game

This is true, but unexpected. There's also a noticeable difference in the urgency of getting up court when Guyton is in...reminiscent of the last several seasons. We also pass up open players who have hustled up the court: get the ball up to them! Maybe they won't score or have an open shot, but it absolutely puts pressure on the defense.

This is something I've thought a lot about the last couple of weeks. Jensen spent 20+ years being "good cop" and although she had a great mentor and example in Bluder, I'm not sure she has a "bad cop" in her. Her press conferences reflect that. Always upbeat, thankful, greatful etc. Great to see something different from what we get from the men's side of things, but not sure the ability to set expectations and hold players accountable is there.

Bluder was a straight up hard ass when she was at Drake according to a couple of her former players. Having kids of her own softened her some, but the expectations she had from her players never left. I'm not sure Jan has that in her and so we see lazy passes, a lack of fight on the boards, and the same mental errors happen not only game to game, but possession to possession......

Bluder always had one really good guard. That is severely missing this year. Olsen is a nice player but not at the level of past point guards. Blunder had the unicorn in Clark, then she had Doyle and Logic as well. I believe they all were four year starters as well, which was a nice 12 year run or so on point guards.

Ok, dark/sandy blonde. Sorry, I'm not a beautician. I don't know the exact terminology.

And I provided you with more information than anyone else
Easy there Kemosabe, I just happened to notice that on a time out shot of her coaching the team. I'm not a beautician either.
Relax, you seem edgy. I'm not attacking you like others.

This is on the players. They are making junior high mistakes. My only criticism of Jan is she won't bench anyone.

I love Hannah, but she had no business on the court yesterday. As bad as her offense was, her defense was worst. If we could have talked Maryland into playing her, we would have won.

AOG was lazy posting up and lazy boxing out for rebounds. Part of our post entry pass issue is on AOG and Stuelke. They don't try very hard to create good passing angles. Heiden and Ediger at least put great effort into their assignments.

Jan needs to hold these players responsible. It just human nature that some people need to be nurtured to greatness and others need their ass kicked there. Dan Gable used to talk about this all the time.

As others have said, Jan needs put her foot down hard.

Great analysis- spot on! I hate “ the post is open, stare stare stare then make the pass four seconds later when it is closed “

I don't know if Jan can she's been an assistant for so long it's ingrained into her personality.

The only thing I would add is Lisa’s ability to fully understand what she had and maximize the pieces as best she could. We will obviously never know but I don’t see Geno or Dawn Staley taking Iowa’s roster the last 2 years and making the final four.

It looked like we started the game in a zone. The place was rocking and the players were hyped up and we sat back in a zone. Maryland destroyed it and got comfortable. In the second half we played mostly man because we were down so many points. We had lots of energy and trimmed their lead. I think that was a mistake to start out in a zone.

Not a stat I typically put a lot of stock into but AOG was -19 on the +/- stat yesterday..........

the timing on screens to get the post moving to the ball is the biggest part of the problem. We have the ball on the wing after the post sets up, then the look, look, look, then throw the pass... The ball needs to get to the wing, screen for the big to move and hit her much earlier. It's like watching a jr high team whose only good player is the post and they force it to them time after time.

Yes staring at the post for 5 seconds before the throw. 15000 know your plan and so does the defense- thus another turnover

I didn't see the game, but it is very difficult to feed O'Grady in the post against a good defender, because she has very little ability to adjust to a pass that isn't perfect. Very limited mobility.
