Not much has changed in the whatsup bubble field. I think we can put Duke solidly in the field. Hopefully we can cross off a few more teams after today's action (Baylor and OU).

I added Indiana State, SC UPstate, Ball State, and Mercer as they are listed in BA's 'out' teams and have games left to add to their resume. Indiana State won their first game of the Valley Tourney and will take on S. Illinois tonight, SC Upstate has Garner-Webb in the Big South Tourney, Mercer has Samford in the Southern Conf Tourney, and Ball State has a 4 game set against Miami (OH).

*EDIT: I added Fairfield (who advanced in the MAAC today) and ECU as those will be potential bid stealing tourney's if they don't navigate the losers bracket.

KSU knocks off Baylor 9-4. According to BA and D1 they both had Baylor out before this loss so it will be hard to see them in the NCAA Tourney. If the committee relies on RPI as they have in the past, Baylor's resume may still be good enough (low 40s RPI) but in a year when some conferences were conference only, Baylor's OOC SOS is 202.

If there was any doubt about Duke being in, they beat Miami (FL) and have now won 10 straight. They're at 24 in the RPI and went 12-3 OOC with a OOC SOS of 21 while 16-17 in conference. Compared to Lousiville who has an RPI of 62 and went 11-5 with a OOC SOS of 211 while 16-16 in conference.

Great work and info Aurora! Where does D1baseball.com currently have Iowa among bubble teams?

Great work and info Aurora! Where does D1baseball.com currently have Iowa among bubble teams?

I'm not a subscriber but d1Baseball doesn't have Iowa listed in its last 5 teams out. Baseball America's prognosis is better. They have Iowa as one of the last 4 teams out.

Regardless of other games, Iowa needs to put an exclamation point on its season and sweep MSU. 2 of 3 won't cut it. There is going to need to be a massive reversal of fortunes for spots 4-8 in the Hawkeye batting order and Norman needs to find his stroke and create havoc out of the first spot.

After that, superior outings from Wallace, Bauman and whoever pitches on Sunday will be needed. If I'm Heller, I'd be damn tempted to start Irvine on Sunday.

Texas up on Oklahoma 3-1 in B8 (Texas is home team). Texas has a runner on first and no one out.

FWIW - here is Baseball America's "bubble" analysis as of May 25th and results since that time - (I'm unsure if they are doing a daily update like d1Baseball):

Last Four In

Alabama (two big wins - they have to be confident that they are in)
Long Beach State (4 game set this weekend)
Louisiana State (first round loss; they are vulnerable)
Louisville (first round win; need a win against ACC #2 seed Ga Tech to keep playing)

First Four Out

Indiana State (as WhatsUp wrote, they won their first tourney game and face Southern Illinois tonight)
Baylor (loses twice in Big 12 tournament; they are likely toast)
Iowa (we know what they are doing)
South Carolina-Upstate (as WhatsUp wrote, they won their first tourney game and face Gardner-Webb tonight)

Next Four Out

Ball State - (as WhatsUp wrote, they have a 4 game set against Miami(OH) this weekend)
Mercer - (as WhatsUp wrote, their tournament starts tonight and they face Samford)
San Diego - (three game set this weekend with Gonzaga)
Oklahoma - (already lost one tournament game and down 3-1 in B8 and have only one at-bat left to keep playing)

So . . if this is to be the guide, Alabama should have solidified its spot as one of the last 4 teams in. LSU's status as one of the last 4 teams in may be in jeopardy.

Indiana State would seem to be next in line to grab LSU's spot and they've won their first tournament game. However, they face Southern Illinois tonight and they lost 3 of 4 prior games against Southern Illinois. If they were to lose to Southern Illinois, they'd play Valparaiso next and they swept Valpo earlier this year. So . . . I'm thinking that it may be "best case" to hope that Indiana State goes 2-2 in its tournament (beat Illinois State; lose to Southern Illinois; beat Valpo and lose to next opponent).

Baylor likely played their way out of the tournament.

That would mean - if this is a ladder - Iowa would be "next up" to snag a spot if Louisville or Long Beach State falters. I'll add this . . . Louisville losing to a higher ranked Ga Tech team isn't a "bad" loss. (I just checked scores Louisville scored twice in T1 and is up 2-0 over Ga Tech).

On the other hand, Long Beach State plays #277 RPI (14-36) UC Davis. I just looked at UC Davis' results. They are a bad team. A really bad team. I'd be surprised if Long Beach State doesn't take at least 3 games. About the best we can hope for is a split of the four games.

If BA's rankings are "chalk," Iowa's best chance for moving up into that final four in would be to sweep MSU and hope that Indiana State finishes with a 2-2 tournament . . . or that Long Beach State implodes. That . . . and no unexpected conference champions stealing bids which already seems like it may happen in a couple of conferences.

This L’ville/GT game is good. L’ville hit a HR in the T11 to go up 7-6. GT just RBI doubled off the top of the CF wall to tie it up. A foot or two away from walking it off.

GT with a 2 out single with runners on 1st and 2nd and the CF booted it! GT winners!

I don’t know if that knocks Louisville out but they are firmly in the bubble.

So you are telling me there's a chance? Obligatory Dumb and Dumber gif here...:)

3 things have to happen

(1) we have to sweep MSU

(2) IU has to sweep Maryland OR Maryland has to sweep IU

(3) pity from the Selection Committee on Selection Monday, where they take 4th place in the B1G Iowa as a result of (1) and (2) happening

SC Upstate down 11-2 in the 9th.
Cal down 6-1 in the 5th.
Mercer down 6-4 in the 6th.
San Diego down 5-0 in the 5th.
Pitt down 3-2 in the 5th but this one doesn’t really matter.

Maryland and Indiana going to have a tough time getting three games in if the weather holds. I doubt there will be any urgency either like we saw for Iowa and PSU.

Campbell and SC Upstate both lost. They will both get at large consideration. They face each other in the elimination game today.

Also, keep an eye on Creighton/UConn. UConn despite having ten games cancelled is all but certain to get an at large. Creighton needs to win the tournament.

As these tournaments progress into the weekend, this projection isn't particularly hopeful. Of BA's last 4 in, Alabama likely assured themselves of a bid by winning its first 2 games of the SEC tourney. Despite its loss yesterday, BA still has Louisville in the tourney and Louisville's season is over. Similarly, LSU's season is over and BA still has them getting a bid despite a poor conference tournament showing. Long Beach State plays an awful UC Davis team over the weekend.

Indiana State has a tough matchup today but, if the Committee is at all beholden to RPI, Indiana State is currently sitting at #36. Tough to argue that the B1G should get a 5th team (Iowa) and that the Missouri Valley should be limited to one team (Dallas Baptist).

I personally don’t think there is much hope. I think Iowa’s only hope is a sweep and IU/MD sweep. For further chaos, Nebraska sweeps Michigan.

So we've added more teams to the bubble... I think it speaks to how soft the bubble is this year and how the Hawks really let it slip away.

Baylor and Oklahoma have been officially crossed off the bubble chart. The Big 12 is a 4 bid league this year unless Kansas or West Virginia can run the table and steal a bid.

UNC and Louisville are done and firmly on the bubble. They will have to sweat it out until Wednesday. Hard to say which way it will go.

Alabama is likely in especially when you compare them to UNC/L'ville.

Indiana State probably has to win another two games for them to show some separation between them and the rest of the Valley. They finished closer to 6th seed Illinois State than they did 1 seed DBU and were 1-3 against DBU this season. Southern Illinois isn't a series bubble contender right now. They finished a game behind Indiana State and are 71 RPI. They play each other today.

Tulane, SC Upstate, and Mercer probably need to win their tourney to get in after losses yesterday.

Cal and San Diego both lost their series openers yesterday. Another loss likely puts them out. Gonzaga clinched the conference by beating San Diego so there is another auto bid that won't be stolen.

FAU joined the bubble discussion by beating top seeded Charlotte in the losers bracket of the C-USA tourney. They will likely have to beat Old Dominion twice to get in.

Wofford plays Mercer in an elimination game. The SoCon looks like a 1 bid league at this point with Samford projected in as the likely champion.

SDSU probably has to win the Mountain West to get in (no tourney) and that would take a complete meltdown from Nevada to do so.

None of these new bubble teams are serious contenders IMO but they need teams to fill those first 8 'out' slots. As much as we need Iowa to win, we need to root against any bid stealers.

**EDIT: I also put Georgia back on the bubble as D1 has them the 4th team in. I think their resume is equally was weak as LSU, Alabama, UNC, Louisville, etc.

It is really starting to upset me because look at some of Iowa’s games where a win here or there probably puts them in. Had Iowa swept Purdue, Rutgers, and PSU. They may have been able to absorb the last two weeks. Heck, had they just won the NW series and picked up one more win against a Purdue, Rutgers, or PSU they may be in. It really is about missed opportunities.

Lots of missed opportunities: Game 1 against Michigan, 4th game against Nebby, 2nd game against Purdue, 4th game at Rutger, 4th game against Maryland, 3rd game against PSU, 4th and 5th game against NW...

Later today and tomorrow looks like a washout in College Park. Maryland and IU could easily bump Up today’s game to noon or 1pm then shoot for a DH early Sunday. Well Maryland’s twitter just posted the 6:30 start. So it looks like there is no sense of urgency.

Big news in the D1 projections. Iowa moved up to the 4th team out without playing a game.

LAST FIVE IN:

61. LSU
62. North Carolina
63. Alabama
64. Long Beach State

FIRST FIVE OUT:
65. Louisville
66. Ball State
67. California

69. Baylor

Part of me thinks this is pointless and the ACC/SEC/Big12 teams will be selected by default and Iowa will be left on the outside looking in. Then part of me thinks those teams' Q1 records are pretty much garbage (under .400), they racked up a bunch of wins against bad teams, and finished under .500 in their conference. Expand the game a little bit and let Iowa, Cal, Indiana State and Ball State in and let them take a shot... The ACC/SEC are already getting half their teams in.

Then while were at it lets push the start of the season back a month and revamp the RPI system!

In some ways it is a joke. If you’re an ACC, SEC school and go .500 or above your right in the mix. If you finish four, five or more games below .500 in any conference then an at large should be off the table.

Look at Long Beach States resume. It’s a joke. Good news is, if they lose even once it’ll bury them. Obviously I am biased, but any of the first five out have better wins and a better resume than LBSU. That’s one I don’t get.
