Buckeye/Isaiah White news

Az: WTH? I'm not a victim of anything and I'm not looking for sympathy. Secondly, if I have a beef with anything going on at OPRF... it would be the administration if there is a lack of emphasis on academics in this specific instance.

Sam Brooks has nothing to do with the OP other then he is an alumni. You don't "denigrate" an entire school by making a comment about one wrestler. That's like saying the comments about Montel Marion, back when he had his issues, was an indictment of the Iowa program. Where do you come up with this stuff?

I call em like I see em. To date, the OPRF guys have all been "wildly inconsistent". The Dardanes are a perfect example. Sammy has been too. Exciting, unexpected wins and disappointing losses. I do wonder, going forward, if college coaches will consider these things when recruiting kids from there.

I apologize if I don't spread the "rainbows and flowers" mentality at all times. I apologize if some aggressively disagree with my opinions and it upsets them. But I believe what I post.

Specifically speaking to your interpretation that I attacked PBS's son... I don't know where the blame lies in that case. High school administration, high school coaches, parents, college coaches, college teammates, campus environment, and the list could be longer. I have no idea. But this is a wrestling forum and we speculate and can disagree respectfully.

Brooks won Fargo a couple of times and third in the world at Cadets while at OPRF and won two state titles. Seems to me, OPRF did pretty well by Sammy. If there has been a problem with inconsistency, it started at Iowa. How's that for puppies and rainbows?

Well from you Mitch:

OPRF wouldn't be the first high profile program to cater to wrestlers and their academic performance. Not saying they are the biggest culprit. But one thing is clear... with the demands of what it takes to excel on the mat, sometimes academics takes a back seat with some kids and their parents.

Good to see u again Slim keep coming back have enjoyed your wisdom of the sport and your post.

MitchL you have to admit you do go out of your way to tear down ISU, Minny and poke the Papa Bear when you can. It's a message board so no big deal. People notice your perogative that's all. Carry on

nothing like kicking a guy while he is down.
He's not down! If he was, one would think he'd have better and more important things to do than posting on a message board.

Whether it's as a Gopher or somewhere else, the family will survive and he'll have a good career as a D-1 wrestler/parent.

The test of an individual is how you respond to adversity.

Guilty.. as charged.:D

PBS is my new RRF.

Except PBS isn't RRF. PBS is a class act who doesn't talk about his kid or talk shit about the schools that he wasn't wrestling for and how his son was going to take it to them. PBS is well respected around here and not just by me. Brings a lot of good wrestling stuff and humor to the table as a fan. Wouldn't it be nice to just let it be and not break his balls if he posts here?

Welcome back PBS, and I hope you can see, most everyone on this board appreciates your insight on things.

I can remember back in the 60's seeing rainbows and flowers everyday. Far out and groovy man. Be careful what you say about Sammy.

Sammy would've been successful no matter what high school he went to. Have you met him or his mother? Northwestern professor who pushed him hard and he responded to it well.

Powell seems like a nice guy but from what I hear, he only cares about the here and now. Bey and White are prime examples

Maybe the question has already been answered, but here goes - why did tOSU recruit him knowing he had such a horrible HS academic record? I don't get it.

Sign a stud and hope the stars align? Hope he remembers you if he becomes eligible in the future? Keeps him from signing with another school with more lax requirements?

This is the institution that housed the infamous "We ain't come to play SCHOOL classes are POINTLESS" tweeter.

I was told by a guy at work who was recruited there in football (many decades ago). His parents wouldn't let him go after the coaches told him "school? You can go to classes after you graduate if you want."

If IA doesn't want the Oak Park wrestlers, direct them north. My philosophy has always been you can never have enough OPRF guys on your roster. The Dardanes were at a private school prior to enrolling at OPRF. The OPRF program took off with the Dardanes and certainly hasn't slowed down. Won't find many more high schools with more success at any level over that timeframe.

Don't believe everything you hear.
Powell is brutally honest with and about his guys. Everybody in the wrestling room knows about those doing well or not in and outside of the classroom because that stuff is discussed openly within the group. It doesn't benefit the kids to keep any ongoing issues a secret if you want them to work through it with a push from teammates. Powell has also been very honest with coaches recruiting his kids when it comes to attributes and faults. Sometimes this doesn't go over so well with some people and it comes off just the way you put it to those getting 2nd/3rd hand stories.
I know for a fact the sacrifices Powell has made for the kids you mentioned as well as others. I also know that he cares more about them being good men, husbands, fathers, sons, brothers and friends than getting their hand raised in the mat.

Dude....just let us stick to the rumors and innuendo. Go away with your first hand knowledge.

I noticed you didn't mention the word, "students." Where I came from, if your grades weren't up to snuff then you didn't compete. So if your grades weren't the best and you wanted to be out there under the lights, you got your nose in a book real quick.

Not to really call you out, but what you said just doesn't make much sense. I'm not saying that Powell didn't care for him, but he probably let wrestling trump grades.

Even Powell himself has said that White doesn't have a very good work ethic. That right there tells me enough.

It wasn't mentioned because I was speaking more to the end product when leaving the program in that sentence (fathers/husbands...).
Powell doesn't let wrestling trump grades, most of the coaches are teachers and tutor the kids that need and want it. There was also real money spent on professional tutors (which goes back to those sacrifices I mentioned earlier). If he didn't care about them being students then grades wouldn't be discussed among the group.

That being said, OPRF is a public school with athletic participation guidelines set by the school and state association. You can't deny a kid otherwise deemed eligible the right to participate based on your own personal grade standards (you can but be prepared for litigation). If you wanna deny participation it's up to the parents to make that call when the kids fall in that technically eligible but not really taking care of business zone. Some have made that call and others haven't. What the coaches can do/have done is deny the extras that come outside of highschool participation (various trips/camps) for those that don't meet certain responsibilities (grades/otherwise).
