Budget resolution that would gut Medicaid and SNAP passes House by vote of 217-215 with one Republican joining Dems in voting no

I tried figuring some of this out for myself, so please correct me where I am wrong.

* Nothing currently is being cut from Medicare or Medicaid
* Google showed me the spend for both programs is roughly 1.4 trillion/year?
* Current budget calls for 880 billion cut over next 10 years (or 880 million/ year)
Is that roughly a 6% reduction in spend per year /over 10 years ?

Aside from being incredibly cruel, this could cripple our economy. How do you cut Medicaid? Do you cut it from kids, elderly, or special needs people? How many rural hospital systems completely crumble? How many nursing homes crumble? Do people just get left untreated as ERs can’t handle the demand? I could this completely tanking our economy.
Rich people don't care about this. Their tax cuts will more than make up for any losses.

Republicans are trying to argue out of both sides of their mouth on this. No, they aren’t SPECIFICALLY calling for cuts to Medicare/medicaid….but it does direct the various committees to make X amounts of cuts. And the committee that oversees those two programs have a large amount they cannot possibly meet unless they make large cuts to both.

No, I understand cutting in one committee to pay for another and all that, I focused on the cuts for the committee that handles Medicare and Medicaid. I am asking if the cuts I mentioned are on its face a big $, but is my ratio correct its essentially a 6% cut if they put it all on Medicare/Medicaid.

They appear to be targeting $1.5T as a whole. This would be more than 6% of the budget.

Right. So well over half of the cuts impact this one committee. Can’t do that without gutting it.
Thats what I am getting at, how is it "gutting" anything, if the budget cut is 6% of the budget?

Not sure about the math, below is a link that explains their options a bit more, hope it’s not behind a paywall.

Two main things overall tho is that they need this to help pay for their tax cuts, not to mention republicans trying to to do this while also saying they aren’t.

Paywall 🙁

I can agree a bit of hypocrisy in that the only need for cut here is because of tax cuts; and also being coy saying they won’t touch Medicare/medicaid when clearly it will.

I just am not seeing the “gutting”, if my math is relatively right, and it’s a 6% cut. Needless cut maybe, but not a gutting. If that makes sense

What I find interesting and what makes all of this the more puzzling is that, as you say, the federal workforce is about 6% of the budget. The size of the federal workforce has basically been static since the 1960's and yet the population of the country has doubled. Is this where we are going to find savings while raising the debt by $4 trillion dollars? Or should we look at the actual debt? Or DoD. This is all a lie.

If there were any justice in this world he was denied life-saving coverage by his health insurer and died as a result.
