C & P McCaffery

IC West has bounced back from their sole loss this season. Both the McCaffery boys are having good years.

Watched them at Linn-Mar last night, was 'disappointed' with Connor as he went with the flow of the game and didn't try to do much, only finished with 11 points. Patrick was a rim-wrecker with 3 or 4 dunks, plus an impressive missed dunk. also had some nice baskets in the short/mid-range area. Hopefully he doesn't stay as skinny as he currently is.:) Think he ended up with 17 points and a few blocked shots

How tall is Patrick I've seen him listed at 6-7 but looks taller. If Connor is 6-5 or 6-6. Patrick must be taller than 6-7

Maxpreps lists him at 6'7''. I could swear I saw something recently that had him closer to 6'9'', but don't recall the source.

1. Connor
2. Wieskamp
3. Pat
4. Nunge
5. Garza

Break out the sunglasses baby!

Really though, an exciting starting lineup

Sort of resembles Wisconsin National title runner up team. These 5 guys will need to be hugely skilled, because it isn't a super athletic group.

Excited about these kids, too, With the McCaffery boys- you have to see them in a number of games. Connor is the better of the two at this stage. Connor plays straight-up and Patrick is loosey-goosey. Patrick is 6-7 and can make some spectacular dunks with his mobility and long arms. Patrick looks about two inches taller than Connor and that is because Connor is a little over 6-5, maybe 6-5 and 1/2. Patrick could grow another inch, maybe to 6-8, but you have to remember that these two kids are a year older than many of their classmates, and probably won't grow much after their junior year. Connor right now looks more mature than many of the Iowa freshmen. If I had to bet, though, Patrick has the most upside, and I can see both these kids starting or being in the top rotation the minute they put on an Iowa uniform.

Is Patrick a sophomore?

Yes. And as far as age goes, my son is the same class (at a different school) and is like 2-3 months younger. The age thing is overblown. It's a big deal in Jr High, not so much by HS.

My son has played against him a few times in AAU. He's long, athletic, good handles (not just for his size), decent but not great shooter, excellent at attacking the rim. The thing that impressed me the most is his vision and understanding of the game. He doesn't play like a SO, he plays like an older player. He appears to have a much better understanding of the game than most kids his age.

Probably a good reason :D

I've seen them both play several times and completely disagree that Connor is the better player. Patrick can play at a different level.

I'd agree. Connor is an excellent player, fully worthy of a P5 scholarship and will be a solid to good player at the P5 level. Patrick has the potential (key word there) to be a difference maker.

I've only seen Connor play in the state tournament last year and honestly couldn't have been less impressed. Really didn't see a B10 type player there at all.

While I agree that Patrick will probably be the better player, the state tournament last year, and HS ball in general, is not a good indicator of success. HS ball has way too many variables, notably the lack of a shot clock, that allow situations like last year's tournament, which was trash. There's a reason prospects mostly get evaluated on the AAU circuit as opposed to their HS career.

This is correct. Both McC boys are worthy P5 players. Conor is legit 6-5 or 6-6, and has skill, can dribble, pass, shot. Not a great athlete, but not slow either. At his size, he could be an effective B1G player. Expecting him to be a star or a difference maker probably not reasonable, but a good player.

Patrick has the higher ceiling. Already 6-7 or more, with a varied skill set. Obviously way, way too early to know for sure, but if he ends up being 6-9 or 6-10 you are talking about a potentially very, very good college wing player. The easy comparison is Uthoff, but I'd say Patrick has the chance to be a better athlete than Uthoff. But size/length and enough quickness to guard perimeter players, and be effective on offense with ability to shoot, pass dribble and finish at the rim.

As I said, Patrick has the better upside, but right now I doubt that Coach Bergman would want anyone other than Connor running his team. Yes, I can see Patrick being an amazing college player as the years go on-- better than Dad, Mom, or his older brother. Don't want to jinx the kid, but he looks and plays a little like a taller Pistol Pete Maravich.

I thought the same thing, but I didn't think Pemsl was that good either. Pemsl has shown me that you can't judge a player by one game.

I hope Patrick's thyroid issue won't keep him from bulking up as he is rail thin right now. He makes Uthoff look like Charles Atlas.

I define athletic as jumping/quickness/top end speed. I define skills as 3ball shooting, FT shooting, ball handling, dexterity with either hand.

That Wisconsin team was not at athletic as the Kentucky team the played in Final-4, but Wisconsin was more skilled.

By this definition, if you watch Bohannon play, he is skilled but not super athletic. Jok is similar, skilled shooter but not super athletic. Glynn Watson on other hand is super athletic. Most of the NBA is super athletic.

Connor Mc knows what he can and can't do, and that's his biggest strength. He can run a team and is an excellent passer. Being 6-5 doesn't hurt either for a guard.

The ceiling is really high for Patrick, needs more strength, but for a HS soph, he's tremendous.

His mother played for Norte Dame.

Margaret McCaffery is/was not just good for teaching her sons basketball. But as far as I'm concerned she is the secret extra assistant coach of the Iowa Hawkeyes. Can you imagine having her to bounce thoughts about basketball off of? Dang straight makes for an asset! And she is, from my understanding, a big part of the identity of this program, which is one where team doesn't end outside the practice facility door. Family is a big part of what this program we enjoy happens to be.

And I'll bet money that Conner has an idea of our offense and defense x's and o's.

I know these are highlight tapes, but I really like these kids. They look like ballers to me. Shoot, pass, hustle .... hope they can bulk up. The future is bright for these two!
