Caitland Clark Committed!!!

Leistikow says this is like getting the Spencer Lee of Women's Basketball. No Chad, it’s not even close to that.

Congrats to Clark and the Women Hawks, though. Can’t wait to see her play![/QU

Spencer was ranked as the overall #1 pound for pound recruit in his class and shes #4 overall for her class. How is it not even close to leistikow’s statement?

You misquoted me, but I’ll oblige. At the same age Spencer was already (twice) the best in the entire WORLD. He was in the conversation as best HS wrestler EVER. Spencer would eventually win a 3rd World Championship, which if memory serves, had never been accomplished by a United States athlete. This was all before he set foot in the Iowa room. Additionally, we got him out of Penn State’s backyard. They wanted him bad, he was at a need weight for them, and we got him. If Caitlin won 3 World Championships, by herself, before college, and was from Connecticut, I could see a comparison. She’s very good, but hardly a generational talent like Spencer is. HIWILLIE can help me out a little here

Perhaps it was just a comparison on height.. Shes got 7+ inches on Spencer, right?

I think you're really picking nits here. The point of the comparison is that both are extremely accomplished and are/were among the very highest rated athletes in their respective sports. Both were huge "gets" for their programs that have the potential to impact those programs for years to come. It's a valid comparison.

One is arguably the best in the history of his sport who had an unprecedented level of success, the other isn't even the best at her position in her class. How is that picking nits? She's damn good, don't get me wrong, and it was a huge pick up. I'm ecstatic we got her.

If CL would have said this is like the Nate Moore (top 10overall in his class, #1 at his weight, from Iowa) of Women's basketball, I'd agree. But to say its similar to Spencer Lee is a gross misrepresentation of the two situations.

Because you're looking at the most minute details to pick apart the comparison. Both are incredibly elite athletes in their respective sports that are rare "gets" for Iowa programs...which is the point of the comparison. The situations don't have to be exactly alike, detail for detail, for the comparison to be valid.

Not to mention that most casual fans wouldn't know who the hell Nate Moore is.

3 World Titles before going to college, something that has never been done in history, is minute? Can you seriously not spot the difference between that, and someone being ranked #4 in their class?

Spencer Lee would have been a rare get for any college he attended. The situations should be similar for the comparison to be valid, which they are not even close. Help me out, please list her accomplishments.

I'll type this again really slowly so you can understand.....I'll even put it in bold for you.

Color me shocked that you cannot provide an answer. I agree about the situations not having to be exactly alike, which is why the Moore comparison is valid. There is no comparison with Spencer Lee.

Maybe you did not notice that Caitlin Clark is considered by some to be the #1 womens' high school player in the country. Not just at her position but considering all positions.

Maybe you didn’t notice, but I previously pointed out that at the same age, Spencer was the best in the entire world. 3 times.
According to Hoopgurlz, she’s #4, number 2 pg.

You’re delaying the inevitable.
I don't know why I am even in this argument as it is kind of silly to argue that my parent is tougher than your parent, when we both have the same parents. But for the sake of comparison, I think the argument is more about the ranking of the athlete compared to the ranking of the school. While I have no reason to suggest Spencer Lee isn't the best or close the the best wrestler Iowa has ever recruited, Iowa is also arguably, one of the top 3 best college wrestling programs ever. For the Iowa women's basketball team, getting a top 4 recruit is much more surprising, in a good way. Had she gone to UConn or Tennesse or Notre Dame (more comparable women's teams to compare to the Iowa wrestling program), we could likely agree that she wouldn't be a Spencer Lee caliber recruit for them. But she is really, really good!

I generally agree with this, with one contention. Spencer Lee would have been a Spencer Lee caliber recruit at Penn State, Ohio State, Oklahoma State or Iowa. That’s the difference imo.

I'm not sure why I'm wading back into this but language and meaning are apparently not easily grasped here.

Here's Chad's tweet:
Wow. This is like the Spencer Lee commitment of women's basketball. Congrats to
@LisaBluder
and the Hawkeye staff.

So he's not comparing the two athletes or their previous accomplishments, he's comparing the importance of the "get." Let me simplify it further:
Is Lee the best, most highly rated, and important recruit that Brands' program has ever gotten? Yes.
Is Clark the best, most highly rated, and important recruit that Bluder's program has ever gotten? Yes.

Thus Clark's commitment to Iowa Women's Basketball is like Lee's commitment to Wrestling.

In the words of Doyle Lonnegan....'ya follow?

Caitlin's team won the gold medal at the FIBA U19 World Cup this summer. Just saying.

I understand what you're getting at. However, did she win MVP of the tournament, or lead the team/tournament in scoring? Was she the leading scorer/MVP 3 times? Genuinely curious because I don't' know. IF she was, then I can admit I was wrong.

Good grief it only counts if she was the leading scorer? I am not saying you are wrong about anything. She is a huge get for Bluder and you could build a team around her. Both kids are great gets. At one time Hoopgurlz had her the #1 player in her class and I know she is now #4. I have seen her play and she is the real deal my friend. I don't understand why we are tying to say one is better or more important than the other. I'm thrilled they are both Hawkeyes.

Jesus, Just let it go. I'm just glad they are both Hawkeyes.

No she wasn't, she averaged 5-6 points a game, Paige Bueckers from Minnesota who is committed to UConn was the MVP. Even still not sure where your going with this. Both are elite, Spencer Lee slightly more elite but the point is still valid.

I'm trying make a link between being a World Champ in an individual sport and what appears to be member of a World Championship team.. Maybe there is none, IDK.

All I'm getting at is comparing the two commitments wasn't a fair statement, considering the accolades.

Thank you for providing that information, I appreciate it. I guess I simply disagree that their commitments are the same, based on their accolades.

She is, no doubt a huge pick up and I'm glad she's playing for us.

It's hard to find anyone else to compare her commitment to. In most of our lifetimes if you could go the football route and suggest maybe Willie Guy?

I just thought it was strange to call out Leistikow's comment when Hawkeye nation is pretty excited about her commitment. I think most are used to Iowa playing second fiddle to most of the big names and figured she was heading to Notre Dame.

"One who is arguably the best in the history of his sport ..........not hardly!

It certainly feels like Iowa WBB is gradually getting to big time status. The difference between Iowa and Baylor, Louisville, South Carolina, Mississippi State, Oregon, ... etc., is that, Iowa has been there before!

The two recruits are alike in that neither is as valuable to the university as a top 5 men's bball player. Not that this is relevant other than the fact that this is the bball forum. Why is there not a separate women's bball forum? I'm not complaining, just asking

Are either as valuable as a top 150 mens bball player? Yea, they probably are..maybe?

Iowa will probably never get a top 5 men’s basketball or football recruit

So, for the comparison you'd require that she we win 3 world championships by herself, in a sport that has four other players on her team? Interesting.
