Can Goodale/Rutgers come so far?

When Goodale took over RU didn't have a NCAA qualifier from the previous year ( Rutgers was ready to shut the program down they were so bad). They wrestled in front of 50 non paying fans forever. Can Goodale/RU actually beat the Mighty Hawkeyes and Tommy Brands in front of 8,000 paid fans?

Great question which I am sure can be adequately answered on the Rutgers message board.

Dont see Rutgers winning even with Iowa having backups in at 125 165 184

Unless Ashnault is healed and good to go (I doubt) and their 157 proves he's the real deal I don't see it happening. Bring in Marinelli and Warner and it's definitely not going to happen. Lee may not beat Suriano (this would be a very close match) but he wouldn't give up bonus at the very least. Props to Rutgers for the team they have put together, but they are still only competing with Iowa when RU is at their peak and Iowa is at their low point in a rebuild year.

Just an update. A healthy Lee does beat Suriano!

I hope you're hedging on Lee/Suriano based on Lee's injury. Because prior meetings between the two suggest Lee is the better wrestler and would win more often than not.

Hawks can win with out Lee. Will start out either 5 or 6 behind but they will overcome that and will not need Alex or Warner either...Might see Alex but don't think will go till midlands and maybe not even then. Why risk a injury let the man get fully healed.

125 - Suriano Fall Rutgers 6 - 0
133 - DelVecchio Win Rutgers 9 - 0
141 - Turk Win Rutgers 9 - 3
149 - Sorenson Major Rutgers 9 - 7
157 - Kemerer Win Iowa 10 - 9
165 - Young Win Iowa 13 - 9
174 - Gunther Win Iowa 16 - 9
184 - Gravina Win Iowa 16 - 12
197 - Wilkce Win Iowa 19 - 12
HWT - Stoll Fall Iowa 25 - 12

You’ve got exactly one year to get your digs in...enjoy it.

No digs..Just really excited that our State University has made such great strides and to be in a conversation about actually competing with Iowa. Iowa Wrestling was always the pinnacle of college Wrestling for NJ wrestlers. 10 years ago (BG) NJ had a great High School state but very few knew anything about Division 1 wrestling. About 12 years ago they proposed to cut the Program at Rutgers and had to have people (WNG) rally to keep it going. I remember going to watch them wrestle in front of 50 family members and them getting beat by an average Navy team 41-0 and they all just laid on the mat. They would wrestle a top 20 program once every couple of years. They would schedule home and aways with D3 teams. I just never thought I would see the day RU would wrestle in front of a sold out Rutgers Athletic Center against Iowa!

I agree that Iowa is down right now (for them) and they have been crushing the recruiting but I don't think this Rutgers program will slide very far and just keep building. Rutgers was a joke to elite NJ wrestlers in the past and that has changed. Only if RU was able to keep home NCAA Champs since 2000:

Molinaro
Burroughs
Joey D-2x
Mocco-2x
Esposito
Pritzlaff-2x
Caldwell*
Russell-2x
Valenti-2x
Hahn-2x
Matter
Zabriskie
Rey

Great time to be a RU Wrestling fan!

By excited, you mean starting multiple Rutgers threads on an opposition forum. Ahem.

I get the excitement of fielding a decent team after being down for a lot of years but you see where we are coming from when you post. Also realize you are in a win/win situation...you have us at home before Midlands in a down year. If you win, you just beat mighty Iowa. If you lose, welp...it's Iowa. Either way, good luck...Richie looked real good. Kemerer and him will be worth the price of admission alone.

Richie is a live wire. Pretty hard to predict that bout. I agree it will be worth price of admission to watch this. Richie has made a splash at Rutgers after U23 World Title.

I don't pay a lot of attention to who writes what on here unless it's really good stuff or really crappy trolling, so not sure what kind of poster you are, but I will 100% agree with what you are saying. I love what Rutgers is doing right now. You have some really solid guys including a couple that could be in the finals this year.
If I were an RU fan I would be very happy with this years team and excited about the trend it might create. Do you have a shot at winning when Iowa rolls in this year? Sure. Margin of error to achieve that win - Zero. I see Iowa by no less than 6 but more likely by 12+ but it's going to be a very entertaining meet that I am really looking forward to. I am going to the MD meet that Sunday, we might be heading east a few days earlier to catch the RU meet as well.

The RAC will be filled, loud as hell, and the place will be rocking !

125- Suriano MD- R 4-0
133- Del Vec D R 7-0
141- Van Brill D R 10-0
149- Sorensen MD R 10-4
157- Kemerere D R 10-7
165 JVB D R 13-7
174- Pagano D R 16-7
184- Gravina D R 19-7
197- Mulligan D R 22-7
285- Stoll TF RU wins 22-12

Lewis beat the 2017 NCAA runner up in All-Star classic last season and then was injured in next match finishing season. He has since conquered the World at U23. I think he proved he's the real deal!

Finally a Rutgers fan posts an actual lineup prediction. Can't count on the OP to do it. Good luck, I don't see it. At the very least I'd flip Turk and Wilcke, which would be 18-16 Iowa.

Those wrestlestat predictions are so bad. Mulligan over Wilkce because Wilcke beat him 6-2 last year makes sense.

Guys: I don't see Kem winning by a decision. As much as Richie is the real deal, I think Kem takes it to a new level as well, and I'm predicting that Richie gets some of what Clagon got last week. I'm predicting the major. This year I think he's going to compete with Nolf and have a real chance of taking him out.

Depends if the bottom game for Lewis is better than when Ed Cooper used to ride the heck out of him. Ed was not a very big 157. His recent FS success sheds no light on this.

He is the real deal alright. Talked a lot of smack about how good he is but has backed it up. Lots of guys can physically and technically hang but Richie has gained a mental edge. Has made huge strides from his first year at Rutgers. A top 4 dude for sure.

Ritchie said he's the best wrestler in the world. He also said he's the best boxer in the world. Hasn't backed up yet. I see him losing to Nolf, Green, and others, then off to MMA to get his brains scrambled

He kind of backed up the best in the world thing for now. He has been telling people that he is pretty good for awhile now which made me laugh because i was like...but bro, Edwin Cooper owned you. Not a slight to EC, but he didn't AA. I agree though...Nolf and Kemerer are going to be very tough for him.

I'm betting they are going to be very tough on him.

Good luck with that ...Lewis getting Majored?.. Clagon is not a goer for 3 periods against the best.. Richie is...Lewis 11-9..I think you guys are 2 caught up with his close losses to Cooper 2 years ago...

I think you are blinded by his recent freestyle success & have forgotten that freestyle results don't always translate in folkstyle, & vice versa.

Tonight Rutgers wrestles top 25 Lock Haven on the road. Lock Haven has their best dual meet team in a decade, They will have a sold out field house and The Haven matches up well. Goodale returning to his Alma mater where he was a 3x NCAA Qualifier. Should be a good dual. Also can't wait to watch the Hawks vs Illinois.

Rutgers vs Lock Haven live..7pm E
