Can someone give me a specific example of a situation where a DEI hire

I think too much is trying to get equity. Standards should be the same for everyone. The tests that were used in Maryland and South Bend..basic and basic physical tests. Do you want the best people?
Yes and to do so you need a large pool of all backgrounds.

Northern, or whoever else wants to chime in. Let’s say you have 2 candidates for a job. Their resumes/qualifications/experience are EXACTLY identical, they exceed hiring qualifications. In fact they’re essentially the same person. Except one is a white male and one is a black woman. The company you’re hiring for has a demographic of 96% white and 75% male.

Who are you going to hire?
This is a simple answer. Whomever performed better in the interview. The interview should be a panel, and consist of people from different backgrounds (as much as possible).
I've never had a panel split on 2 people being identically equal after an interview.

So let’s continue that. Say the minority is hired and the white guy runs to the papers to scream foul play. Death to DEI?

I work for a university. I do not see lower training standards. I do see all people being held to lower standards, but especially females.

In industry where I have a dual career, lot's of cronies type stuff.

Stupidity abounds in both sectors.
Agree with this. Seriously when you get on a plane do you look to make sure the Captain “looks like you”?

But yes the nepotism is annoying: “She got her job cause her Mom works here”.
Or he got his job cause the boss is his Uncle.

If someone gets a chance and meets all qualifications and training standards I’m not upset about it.

Yes. People are petrified if it isn’t a crusty old white male that flew in Vietnam.

You tell people to work hard and pick themselves out of the poor depths of society yet won’t throw them a rope to climb out? Just let them drown instead. Most aren’t asking to be plucked out of the water, they just want a legitimate chance to get out.
I highly respect your knowledge of the aircraft industry but I differ with your view on this.
If you work hard and you are qualified you don’t need a rope. Not anymore.

Just let them drown? I’m gonna guess they aren’t going to drown…they have prepared themselves for opportunities and that includes having the ability to survive just fine.

I never noticed much crust. Did they get psoriasis in Vietnam?
Those guys have aged out and you know that, I’m sure.
You know better.
You know what I mean. And you’re completely naive if you think people don’t pre judge the qualification/skill of a young minority female pilot and would rather have an old white male military jet jockey in that seat.

I’ve witnessed it first hand. Hell I get it because I’m 37 and look 16. I’ve been the captain with 8000 more hours experience than the 62 year old sitting next to me. Guess who people think is in charge?

Bitter white males. Do some research into how many white males make up ATC.
64% white
12% black
12% Hispanic

Seems pretty much in line with our national demographics. (61%/ 12%/ 18%) Hispanic number is a little lower.

I’m all for trying to get more diversity in the application pool. We definitely should be doing that. But once the candidates are chosen, it should come down to the ones who are most qualified to to the best job.

If someone has more experience or has gotten a better grade, hire that person. Doesn’t seem that’s what is happening though.

Was held to lower qualifications and/or training?

Sounds more like a legacy nepo baby issue.

I know in aviation, hiring from a larger pool of diverse candidates everyone is still hired and trained to the exact same ****ing standards.

So do we start asking for photos of the mechanics who serviced the plane?

There’s a long time poster on the FSU Board who flew in Nam and has since retired as an American Airlines Captain. I - and others - tend to take his voice of experience and since you weren’t born when his ass was getting shot at he has my respect. Him and all the guys who wore an 18 inch zipper.
Your turn will come and you’ll be the head guy. I’d feel safe if you were my Jet jockey by the way.

I have flown a lot lately including to Europe. The pilot I felt the most comfortable with was a +- 60 woman in what appeared to be excellent health. Friendly but no non-sense. The first officer was maybe upper 30s and not as confident. For some reason the door was open longer than usual while sitting (I think the younger pilot left and came back) and it was comforting to see how seriously she took her role.

As in they’re hired unqualified or **** up
and should be fired?

I only ask because it can also be viewed from bias. “Oh well of course she ****ed it up, she is a woman.”
At the university, I would say the better employees have a more difficult time as supervisors don't want friction and those not pulling weight complain about pressure (subtle) to work more efficiently.

In both sectors, I do see ageism. Younger are generationally more reluctant to associate with older workers and take input, even when done professionally. I see that now more than ever.

In the public sector, there more more bad and more really good employees.

In the private sector I notice few really bad ones (unless a relative), but fewer really good ones as they don't feel the freedom to excel as the corporate policy takes first place.

For example, some banks that manage farms will rent farms only to farm lending customers and bypass the obvious best farmers.

My observations.

Affirmative Action was necessary. Naturally there will be issues and some hires simply aren't good.

At issue with Trans is this when is the elephant in the room that many of you will ignore...

The people I've been around that are trans typically have deep seeded issues which comes out in mental health and the mental health issues aren't all about discrimination.

People with PTSD as an example shouldn't be police officers, firefighters, teachers, train/truck/bus drivers and so on. At least not without considerable work on the injury.

Getting to deep issues of trans is something few therapists would want to dive into without risking their license. Again, my experience is that they tend to have emotional instablity at a greater rate than the general public.

A gay person? I have no issues with that. You are talking about someone who has articiafically had their body systems messed up.

What do you know, other than the fact that you fly numerous days a week? My nearest republican, CHEETO, and Fox all say different.

And I tend to take the word of my brother, a B52 navigator that also worked on the F15, was head of Top Scene, and is currently employed in Naval Intelligence over the poster you’re talking about.

Good qualifications. Sounds like experience and expertise. Who wouldn’t?

Exactly why the yuppies are screaming foul about DEI. Oh knows Chad can’t get the job after doing cocaine lines and sexual assaulting coeds through college because some brown person worked the night shift paying their way through school got the job.

So ****ing sick of the falsehood fears spewed throughout this country by elected officials. Their brainless mouth breathing cult laps it up. It was the same shit with Covid masks. Everything is made into a political issue.
and Big Pharma biased research? Does that scare you? Really just asking.

No. I don’t. I think one leader of a certain party latched onto something to make certain people feel upset about an issue that isn’t an issue nor will ever affect them.
I work at a Fortune 100 company. I’ve done well for myself but I don’t have aspirations of being a VP or even a Director level either. What I can tell you is my company has been very transparent that in order for them to fill a position they need to have interviewed at least one woman or minority interviewed. They interview at least 3 but no more than 5 for every position. Simple math tells you that every opportunity for a promotion me went down by 20% solely because I’m a white male. Explain to me how that isn’t a racist hiring practice and how that doesn’t affect me?

Sounds like everyone has an equal chance to me.

Maybe ask why do we actually need an interview quota for certain candidates. Fix the underlying issue. It was qwhite a problem before.

All DEI does is give those without the chance to get an interview, get an interview. You make your qualified base larger. Otherwise you’re just hiring from the same old standard stale white cracker institutions.
That is inherently false. When put any qualifiers on eligibility for anything, you are shrinking the pool.
