I hear this all the time but I’ve literally bought one car in my adult life and I was like 24. How does one go about finding said reputable dealer?
They are out there…Willis in DSM area sells lots of premium used vehicles… a family member drives for them and he has delivered cars to customers in Minnesota, west central Nebraska, northern ‘burbs of Chicago..I’m thinking that says something about the dealership…you will pay top dollar but you won’t be screwed.

Speaking of Willis...daughter had a 2017 Armada they bought when Nissan was Hummells. It was making a banging/rattling noise a year or so ago. Mantanance dept declared the motor was shot and around $5k to fix. Took to a private mechanic and it was diagnosed as a loose spark plug.

I know, one instance, but ...

I was tempted to go in and test drive a new one and beat the piss out of it with the salesman riding shotgun.😉

I will say smart Honda in Urbandale impressed me with a used car we were going to buy but then they decided they couldn’t sell to us because of issues the discovered. I think that is common for big dealerships. They don’t want their name smeared by selling a used lemon. They typically only have good condition used cars for sale.

2019-2022 Toyota Highlander
That's been my strategy; used Toyotas.
Only because no one has said it:

Subaru's really are bullet proof. Everyone is going to know you like a pinky in your bum, but they are a good vehicle. You could get a Nice Subi for 40k.
Eh, wouldn't say that. They had a rash of issues in the mid 2000s. Supposedly they've worked past those now. But I'm not going back.

Subaru I had ended up with head-gasket issues. Stupid horizontally opposed boxer engine.

I have always loved the looks of audi's, shout-out Ronin, but damn if I wouldn't be worried buying a used one.

I'm a Toyota guy, the shit just works.

I have 189k in my Tundra and have done oil, filters, tires, new bulbs, new Battery ( 2011) and I had to replace the end of the battery cable due to my own fault. When I put the battery in I didn't put the battery compression bolts back and and it ( bat) moved and broke the connection. I used some nuts and bolts i had in the truck to connect the raw end back to the battery and the damn thing fired on like 7 volts.

Same. 2011 Tundra with 187k. Not a hiccup. (put 100k or so on it)

Pretty much everything depreciates faster than Toyota! The resale on Toyota is one of the most amazing phenomenon in the car biz. If you’re considering a 2020+ Toyota, just suck it up and buy new. Unless you’re willing to scour the internet for months and find the diamond in the rough, the scales wont tip to your favor in the used market. Especially if you’re looking at trucks/suvs.
Wanna pickup a 2012 (last year they made them) v6 Toyota Rav4 for storm chasing. Last forever and supposedly the v6 is complete overkill and the thing flies. Was the fastest car in their lineup for a while.

I've heard some people say that Toyotas have been living off their reputation for several years now. The new ones are good, but not as good. Whether that means it's smart to get an older one is beyond my pay grade.
Brother in law is certified Toyota mechanic; says same. But a lot of updates to their lineup, so give it a few years.

Aside from it being a Ford that comes with Ford’s illustrious history, I don’t really have a lot of negative things to say about it (yet). It needs a longer sample size, but I know a number of people with them and they love them and they’ve Bronco has treated them well. And these are outdoorsy people that aren’t pavement princesses. The only real complaint they’ve given is that some of the interior components are “cheap” and don’t hold up. That could be because they’re launching their ski boots in with reckless abandon though. Honestly, I think it would be a fun car. The aftermarket mods for them are blowing up like “Yota’s” and Jeeps which will pull more money from your wallet but in a fun way. I’d say definitely worth a look.
As far as Fords go, I am two years into my second Ford Explorer over last 10 years and have had zero issues in their combined 215k miles. Zero. Also the best driving road trip vehicle I have ever had in terms of smoothness on the interstate at 75-85 mph and cabin quietness. I got the original one because of driving an office one and discovering how good a ride it was.

I buy something old and used gently, drive it for three years and sell it for maybe 2k les that’s what I paid

After owning three Camrys, I've upgraded to a 2025 Lexus ES300h Ultra Luxury, it's an amazing car. If you want comfort and luxury, this is for you.

Yup. You sound exactly like my wife. I wanted to get her a fully loaded Toyota Highlander. She said, I'm 51, can I please have a luxery vehicle now? So, I switched my hunt to Audi, BMW, Lexus, etc. She LOVES her Audi. You know what they say, happy wife, happy life!

As for me, I'll drive my '16 Wrangler until I'm dead. My avatar is my actual Jeep. Mrs. Alaska had it changed into a graphic and decal for me for my 50th.
Your wife asked your permission on what vehicle she can buy? lol

The rx350s and other Toyota products with the 3.5 v6 have a problem with developing an oil leak at the front cover. They are great other than that, but it's an expensive and intrusive repair. The only way to do it is to remove the motor from the vehicle. Just a heads up for your consideration.

That would be an interesting life to be in your fifties and have to ask permission to buy a car. Can't imagine that.
It would be interesting to be sitting at home watching TV and my wife just roles up with a new car unbeknownst to me. Also, I never looked at it as "asking permission", we do everything together and make all decisions as a team. Maybe I should have worded it like this. Her Grand Cherokee died. I said, let's look at a really nice Toyota or Honda since they're more reliable. She said, I'd rather have an Audi, Lexus, etc. Can we make that work with our budget?

Does that sound better for ya?

I’m endorsing this for the simple reason that I’m on my fourth Acura and a huge fan of the brand. Started out leasing a TL and bought it, traded for a new TL then moved over to an RDX. I now have my second RDX that I bought from the car dealership (where I was working part time) as a two year old lease trade with 23K miles. Got the employee discount and a great deal.
Will always have an Acura -even if I win the lottery. 😬

My sister on ybe other hand, has driven nothing but Volvos for 35 years. She has spent at least three times as much on maintenance as I ever have. She truly believes she’s driving the only safe vehicle on the road. (She’s straight so she won’t buy a Subaru 🤣). Volvos are good looking cars and do seem to have a long life, so that’s in their favor.

Neighbor has a 2023 Toyota Highlander and it is really a nice car. Can’t say a single negative about them.
LOL, I did NOT see this post before I posted the one about my folks.

Again, CHECKS OUT! :p

Unless you’ve got something against Toyota/Lexus, give the NX Hybrid a looky look. I have been very impressed with that vehicle and I’m not a hybrid guy.
The only thing I have against Lexus is the ugliest grill in the history of the planet. That's enough for me to avoid an otherwise excellent brand.

I really like the RDX so that was where I started, but no pics really wanted a 3rd row and refuses a minivan. RDX doesn't seem to have one, but short of that, it was my favorite. I found the drive of the Hondas to be too sterile and a bit small. Didn't look at the Toyotas as they were not interested in making deals 4 months ago. Went with a new Atlas due to the interior space and she has been happy so far. I don't drive it much but there are a couple small things that are "me issues".

So in your opinion I’m a semi-racist cable watching boomer?
I am a Boomer. Check.
I tend to watch local television news. No check.
I am not a semi-racist. I have no idea where that came from unless you’re only speaking about your parents and their positions.
Therefore the only thing that checks out between me and the people who hatched you is that we’re boomers who appreciate quality automobiles.
So aside from trying to give me a rafter of 💩, what’s the deal?

Not really. If she’d instead said I’d like a Lexus and I know we can fit it in the budget so if you want to help in my car search your help would be welcome. 😎

Well, since she wants to be hands off finances and be a stay-at-home mom (her choice), she'd just be flat out lying if she said that. So, no.

It would be interesting to be a fly on the wall when the finance manager comes out and asks her to list her income to qualify for the loan, though.

Just teasing, take it down to DEFCON 2.

Finance Managers at auto dealerships with an IQ above room temperature don’t phrase it that way. Car payments now can easily run up into the $700-800 range and younger couples can rarely manage that amount on a single salary.

And assuming that both persons in the marriage work outside the home didn’t use to be a take it for granted thing either.
As a former military guy you should remember that being transferred regularly meant that the wife usually didn’t have a serious career that paid enough to make a difference. A part time job at Target off base didn’t add a lot.
Those of us who were climbing a corporate ladder were very similar.
One year for example we were in Tally on Jan. 1, Atlanta on May 1, and New Jersey on 12/31. Oh, and I had a baby along the way. So no income from me once we left Tally. I was kinda busy.
By the last move 20 some years later I was working full time and it would have been insulting for a loan officer not to ask me if there would be two incomes for consideration.

Understood and if she needs to be a stay at home Mom (aka a prison matron to teenagers - I was one) I completely get that.
Not everyone knows that a 16 year old seriously takes more work than a 10 month old. 🤣
