Cash to stay at 97

For this year it may not be the worst idea. 184 is still kinda top heavy and Downey has the potential to win it all. 197 has McCutheon ranked 4th. Any weight that has Matt McCutheon ranked 4th sets up for a chance at a high AA placing for a hopefully improved Cash. Also I am not sure Warner couldn't be a 84lber for a year or 2 if need be.

I will take bush lite thanks. I think this is the best move for the team. Not saying bowman hammer but he had two 1 point wrestle off with cash. So see how bowman and cash do. Insert pat second half at ether weight

Glad to see this. It puts Wilcke in the best position to do well at 197 at NCAAs and indicates that there's an internal expectation that Downey will in fact see the lineup in the spring.
So if Downey does everything he needs to do to join the team in January but decides he'd rather wrestle 197 is he allowed to?

He isn't even a Hawkeye right now. Of course its not set in stone. But 184 is his ideal weight

I guess it depends on your definition of "ideal". Some might say the path at 97 is more "ideal". He didn't do too bad at 97 in the past...All I'm saying is that Pat going to 84 is not set in stone, per him.. So an article stamping it as truth is a little premature.

And thanks for the clarification on him not being on the college team yet, WT.

That would be unfortunate, but I guess it could happen and would still net more points than Wilcke 184/Holloway 197 and no Downey. Downey has said he's going 184, so he and Wilcke seem to be in sync on a plan. Under the circumstances, that's the best we can ask for. To answer the question, yes, I'd let Downey wrestle 197 if he decided in January that's what he needed to do. Wilcke's option is to beat him.

Considering the fact that he's still physically maturing (just look at his face and frame) and that he already weighs over 220lbs...that tells me making 184 for a season was gone his senior year of high school.

I warched Downey's Flo interview and he siad he is going 184. Obviously things and and do change but most things ive seen point to him going 84

Downey is clearly ducking McCutcheon.

Doesn't matter what pat wants. It's what brands tells him to do. I believe brands will see who is performing better heading into January than see what weight pat goes. This might not get settled tell late into the season. If a wrestler is on hot streak you don't pull him. If both cash and bowman are wrestling poorly than pat will wrestle both weights

The fact that Cash is moving to 197 should be a pretty good sign that the coaches have faith that Downey will be at 184 for Iowa this year.

Huh? Cash isn't moving anywhere. Would it be best practice to have Cash cut to 84 all season, or just the second half? This could very well be the line up, but ya can't print it as the line up come March. Not this early at least.

I am blanking, but who wrestles 184 the first part of the season, or the whole season if Downey doesn't make it?

From article... In the meantime look for North Scott standout Mitch Bowman to be the starter until Downey’s eligibility question gets answered.

I would guess the Holloway/Costello winner wrestles 285 until Stoll is back. Reportedly Holloway won't make 197 and I don't think Costello redshirts if he is the guy to start the season at heavyweight.
