IOWA CITY — The University of Iowa is one step closer to possible major renovations of Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Iowa has completed a feasibility study for renovating the 40-year-old arena, interim athletics director Beth Goetz said at the university’s monthly Presidential Committee on Athletics meeting.

“Obviously we love Carver,” Goetz said. “We love the environment there. It’s been just a great friend and home to us for about 40 years, and we need it to continue to be so for a few more decades to come.”

Possible upgrades include fan amenities, premium seating and bringing the student section “a little bit closer to the floor to create that great fan environment.”

“On a basketball court, when you’ve got them a little bit closer to the action, it’s more meaningful to the students,” Goetz said. “We are trying to really engage directly with some student groups. We’ve got a couple classes ... we’ve asked to actually help us understand what would be most important to you as students coming to a game.”

Moving students closer to the court comes with its challenges, though.

“Depending on how you’re seated, moving people around is more complicated than it sounds,” Goetz said after the meeting. “We want to honor and serve all of our longtime fans and season ticket holders. At the same time, you’re inviting your student body in.”
Iowa plans to seek feedback from fans on what to improve at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

“Is this what people envision?” Goetz told The Gazette. “Is this going to serve you in the way that we think it will for the long term?

The feasibility study is “step one” in the renovation process.

“When we talk about a feasibility study, it’s having architects sit down and say, ‘Hey, what’s possible?’”

The timing of the renovation “all depends on the philanthropic support that we can generate,” Goetz said.

Iowa has sometimes issued bonds to pay for facility upgrades, but Goetz is “approaching it as an entirely philanthropic project at this point.”

“We certainly want to see from a feasibility standpoint what philanthropic support we might be able to get,” Goetz said.

As the renovation planning process continues, Carver Cone connoisseurs do not need to worry.

“I know somebody’s going to make sure we get another ice cream machine,” Goetz said to laughter from the rest of the committee.

They'd better start out with a small student section, and figure out how to break it to the people who have been paying to sit close to the court. Students don't show up at games. It's been that way for a long time.

Seating isn’t helping students appetite to show. And plenty of games where the first four rows has empty seats as well..,

Really. A Feasibility study. What a waste of time and money. There is absolutely nothing listed that hasn't been a top two or three item mentioned by fans for the last thirty years. How much money did they waste to regurgitate what they knew and anyone with any common sense knew for decades. Geez. Doesn't anybody make a decision anymore without outside "EXPERT" approval. Afterall those experts have been wrong more often than not.

Maybe there are structural engineering issues?

what i want to know is, if they get moved closer to the court, how much do they plan on charging students to attend games? if it's more than $5 it's too much.
Something I learned this year was that student season tickets for basketball sell out every year. So money doesn't seem to be the deterrent. It's actually getting those same students who already purchased tickets to actually show up.

The early moves Gaetz is making are showing how asleep at the wheel our former AD was.
I really don't think he was asleep at the wheel.....he was hand holding to the fat cats. Raised a bunch of funds but he was not going to do anything to upset the high priests of the kingdom.

Gaetz on the other hand does not have the baggage and can "do her job"......and I think she will. Already started.

C'mon. A feasibility study is a lot more than just a list of things you'd like to have. It includes things that are possible and aren't possible, It includes costs and ability to raise money to pay for it. So, you spend a couple hundred thousand before you spend $50 million - more information available the better once you start drawing up plans.

Having other "attractions" right by carver would go a long ways. Bars and restaurants would be sweet. Place for students and all fans to meet up for food and drinks and then walk a block or two to get to the game. Then visit the same establishments after the game too.

Might as well start selling beer in CHA and see if there's room to put a couple of bars/pizza spaces around the upper concourse. I'm thinking like the party decks they have at MLB parks. Find a way to make it an event... a "happening". Not just a basketball game to go watch.

They do sell beer. Where you been?

Have them put in some suites while they’re at it.

Agreed. A big issue with Carver is that it sits alone. Closest would be down on the strip - not an easy walk in January.

I'm pretty skeptical that Iowa will be able to raise enough money from just donations for a meaningful renovation to Carver.
Good call out, they need to find the money and do the renovations right. No shortcuts or compromises.

Are you seriously arguing that the university should spend at least $200 million without input from experts in these types of projects?

Someone mentioned it’d be nice if there were more restaurants close by that you could walk to. I’m surprised no one has bought some of those old apartments across the street to tear down and build a restaurant. Maybe the permit/red tape for something like that would be too complicated though and that’s why.

I too would hope the feasibility study and ultimate solution to be about the entire experience including parking. You're right, it's a mess and a pain to get to. Not a pleasant experience in Jan and Feb.
Pretty short walk from the Finkbine lot.

The only way the students will show up is if they are paid NIL money to be there. All you new AD fans boys start saving your money to put students in the seats cuz free food and rides lasted 1-2 years.

This cluster is going to be fun to watch.

Winning would help too. If the team were in contention for a big ten regular season title that would likely do it IMO.

Or stop charging for anything other than football for students. Scan an ID to get in. Worry about overflow when (if) it ever happens.
Student tickets sell out every season apparently. So money does not seem to be a factor. It's getting the students who have already purchased tickets to actually show up.
