Chris Carter

Carter probably said the dumbest thing ever at rookie orientation. Have one of your boys ready to be your fall guy if you do something stupid. Unbelievable.

Chris Borland from the 49ers commented last week that he was offended three years ago when he was told to "find a fall guy". Now Chris Carter is publicly saying this again. It seems like this is something that was always understood, but never spoken about. I feel like this is similar to handing out condoms in schools. You know they are going to get in trouble, they are just trying to be realistic about the situation. May as well try to minimize the damage. Pretty sad that is the reality to most NFL players.

He probably should have told them to hire a personal driver instead of spending hundreds of thousands a year on ugly ass jewelry. Aldon Smith would be signing a 100 million dollar contract year end had he done that.

It was incredibly stupid of the NFL having a bankrupt woman beater (Warren Sapp) and someone with a deviated septum (Cris Carter) orient there new players. The only way this would have been better is if Ray Lewis was there too. Couldn't the NFL have picked one of the hundreds of retired players who played out their career without any run ins with the law and successfully transitioned to a new career outside of football?

edit - their to there

Colleges let a lot of these athletes run the campus/city. It's no wonder their stupidity grows ten fold when given millions of dollars. Sam Hurd was making almost a million a year and decided he wanted to be George Jung. Now he is doing 15 years in prison.

I'd like to know the full context. My aunt used to watch his kids at daycare (many years ago), and always said very good things about him. My hope is this is a situation where the quote is a snapshot of a much larger conversation and taken out of context.

I think you had it right the first time. Their shows the players are a part of the NFL.

The sound that Schein played *Cris Carter was telling the guys that they make the money so find a fall guy. If their boys want to keep livin the life they got to drive, they take the trouble, they go to jail

I'm sure there are plenty of conversations about not being a dumbass. Ideally you would have a whole league of upstanding individuals. Realistically there are going to be a large number of said dumbasses. If you are a dumbass - get a guy to cover for you. Unfortunately most dumbasses, don't know that they are the dumbass.

Nothing good happens after midnight. . . That's pretty much what needs to be said.

Leave the clubs, leave the bars, go home.

Listen to the whole thing. You'll find it disappointing, if you originally had a positive view of Cris or his intelligence level.

the audio I've heard was ridiculous. he basically said if you want to go out and be a player, invite friends along, pay for them, but be sure one of them knows he goes to jail if there's trouble somewhere along the way.

And Cris just defined the biggest problem in the NFL.
Players, especially rookies, are not treated like adults. The cycle of excuses and coddling that the players have been provided since junior high, is continued. Is it any wonder that many of them end up in poverty the minute their playing days are over?
If the NFL really wanted to help its players, it would never let Cris Carter speak to rookies again.

Chris admitted he made a big mistake in this advice. He's a great family man by most accounts..
With that being said using him and Sapp and not discussing content is pure NFL. Really poor management.

Re: hiring a driver.
As part of collective bargaining believe it or not any NFL player can call a # and get a free ride home and someone to drive their ride home also. 100% confidential 3rd party, no reports to team, coachs or league. The guys who get picked up or in crashs are total meatheads..

I heard his rant he sounded like a thug.

He should be fired from his gig at the network, coaching someone on how to get out of a crime the just commited is plain wrong.

Right
Not much of an overreaction.
Cris Carter has apologized for his "fall guy" comments made during the 2014 NFL Rookie Symposium after ESPN and the NFL issued statements of rebuke Sunday.

Carter's apology came after statements from the NFL and ESPN.

The NFL's statement on Carter:

“This was an unfortunate and inappropriate comment made by Cris Carter during the 2014 NFC rookie symposium,” the NFL’s statement said. “The comment was not representative of the message of the symposium or any other league program. The league’s player engagement staff immediately expressed concern about the comment to Cris. The comment was not repeated in the 2014 AFC session or this year’s symposium.”

ESPN's statement:

“We completely disagree with Cris’s remarks and we have made that extremely clear to him. Those views were entirely his own and do not reflect our company’s point of view in any way.”

I have already emailed both the league and the network asking that he be terminate stating I can no longer support any sponsor or employer that would continue to employ someone who has such views on crime.

Why did you wait so long - it's been over a year....

I wouldn't be surprised if Carter was doing exactly what the NFL wanted him to do.

Instead of having a "fall-guy" in your "crew," just ditch the freaking "crew" all together. Nothing but leeches to these kids.

CC is a smart, well spoken man who felt like it was more important to get some kind of cultural cred than it was to actually educate a group of young men. It's sad, but predictable.

I'm a bit surprised by the response of everyone here. It seems like a bit of an overreaction how offended everyone is about his speech. I expected worse and didn't really have an issue with what he said.

The reality is that NFL rookies are 20-22 years old, making a bunch of money, and many from poor backgrounds. I'm sure that a lot of those players have childhood friends who are leeching off of their wealth. If I was a player supporting a couple of dead-beat friends, I would make sure they understood that their ability to experience a rich lifestyle (because of the me) is because I'm playing pro football. For the "crew members" getting free everything, absolutely they should be ready to take the fall if needed on something negative. Otherwise, the lifestyle ends for everyone. Seems like common sense to me.

I'm aware that it would be best to not have a crew of leeches or do stupid things, but realistically, a lot of players will.

I agree, and I don't believe he was implying the players would be the ones in trouble either. I just saw the video for the first time on CNN. It appeared to me he was talking about the players taking their friends out, and not indicating the players were going to get into trouble. Sure, it was a poor choice of words when your being recorded, but to be honest, it's not even worth getting offended over. You could also tell in his mannerisms and tone he was playing to the crowd, not to mention it was a light-hearted, sarcastic/joking tone all the way through. It's easy to take it out of context as everyone predictably has to make a better story.

He's basically saying: You're going to take your friends out, and you need to tell them, "I know one of you is going to do something stupid, and if we get into trouble, one of you is going to take the fall, and I'm the innocent party. I'll pay for everything, and I'll bail you out, but my name must stay clean."

Wise by him to just apologize instead of trying to explain himself too much, that's always a rabbit hole with a media eager to drag someone's name into the mud.

Final question: Is it good advice?

That's what I got out of it. He was trying to really lay on the blackness and it was embarrassing. I have always thought he was a hypocritical POS.

I am late to this topic. I just watched the video. I also read the supposed conundrum the journalist was in who filmed it after getting access to this usually closed-door event. I have mixed thoughts on the journalist releasing this now. I understand it to some degree that maybe, as time went by, he just felt that this needed to be shown- particularly given the alarming number of high-profile mis-steps NFL players have had over the last year. Yet it does shed a light on the grimy underbelly of journalism and selective reporting. He said he wanted "future" access. The need for access is a real catch-22.

The jousrnalist suggested that at first he didnt think to publish because it was not central to the overall message of the discussion. he then had a change of heart it seems.

My next thought upon watching the video was, Who is this man who looks like C Carter and is wearing his Hall-of-Fame jacket? Where did this screaming person with horrible English grammar come from? You have to have a fall-guy? Nice job CC. Will be interesting to se eif he keeps getting his spots on Mike & Mike and others. Because as Carter has pointed out many times, when there is a video out there it changes everything.
