Fran’s replacement

I could get behind McCollum if that's the way it goes.

But I have two lingering concerns:
  1. Can he recruit at the top level? Developing lower-rated talent is great, but to compete at the highest level, you've got to have a few top-notch guys coming in.
  2. Style of play. I caught one of Drake's recent games on the TV, and it was kind of jarring to see players slowly walking the ball up the court after a made basket on the other end. That said, at the end of the day, I'm more worried about being successful than any particular style of play. But fans would need to prepare themselves for something significantly different than what we are accustomed to.
I welcome any response to ease my concerns.

I think he could recruit for the Big Ten, doubt it would be countless 5 start kids. This dude doesnt need 5 stars to win, I think he recruits to what he wants/needs and coaches the hell out of his kids. His style of play, I think he plays to what his roster dictates. The roster he has this year at Drake, he's playing the way he as to, to win games.

Listen to him talk about why he is playing the style he is right now… he says he doesn’t the amount of shooters he has had in the past, so they do want to jack up quick shots right now with his personnel. If he has the right personnel, they will play faster and with more fluidity as his teams at northwest did.

He really leans into the strategy he thinks will win games based on his personnel, their opponents and the scouting report.

He is all about winning.
The longer I think about it, the more and more his style reminds me of Izzo. His teams run when it is there but they do it selectively and under control. They rebound and defend like no other and his players are tough.

I am all in on McCollum. If Iowa doesn't go get him, he is going to be going somewhere soon.

I appreciate all those who have provided great information and background on McCollum. Very helpful. I would have no problem getting behind him as the next Hawkeye coach.

That said, I would also encourage everyone to be cautious about getting too attached to the prospects of McCollum and/or DeVries. While both could be possibilities, there are a lot of other potential coaches out there who could also be good options. Remember, when we hired McCaffery, very few folks had him on their radar. Same thing with Lickliter.

If we do make a coaching change this spring, there's a good chance the new coach will be someone whose name has yet to surface on the message boards.

Really worth the watch and thanks for posting. I am even more impressed with Coach McCollum now than before the interview. His perspective about getting better every day and results would take care of themselves is very true IMO from my own experience in business. I really feel the guy has the "IT" factor, reserved confidence, and the communication skills to be successful no matter where he is coaching.

I have been a DeVries fan for quite some time and feel Iowa would be fortunate to have either DeVries or McCollum at Iowa.

My question is if they do part ways with FM do they try to keep a local ties coach or go outside the box to bring someone in that has no affiliation with the state or the University....

I am starting to lean into a decision to retain Fran, at least one more season.. hear me out:

Darian DeVries and Ben McCollum are both in year 1 at their respective programs. WVU has lost 4 of their last 5 and have nearly the same record as Iowa currently. Mac is 21-2 at Drake in his first year. Fran does have a solid recruiting class coming in.

If I am Beth, right now, maybe I give Fran one more year to see if he can turn it around and this would also give an opportunity to see how both Darian and Mac to see how their second year goes. I don’t think Mac would leave to another program after this season, other than Iowa.

No. He’s had 15 years with not much to show. It’s past time for a change.

Well, we won't have to worry about it for at least one more season.

McCollum isn't a 1 and done at Drake.

Yes, he himself said this.

That's exactly right 15 years is plenty of time to see what type of coach and program this is. If you look at the top 12 teams right now in college basketball most if not all are defensive minded coaches. This is the style that wins on the road. We need a coach that can recruit, coach defense, and have his team playing it's best basketball in March! None of these attributes scream Fran! Sorry but he has had his time!

Lisa Bluder is the only answer. She's coming out of retirement.

It sure looks like writing on the wall with Fran as I can’t see him being the coach next season. With that said here are a few coaches that they need to look at hard!

Ben McCollum Drake
Chris Jans Mississippi St
Darin DeVries West Virginia
Jarrod Calhoun Utah St
Buzz Williams Texas AM (wildcard longshot)

Thoughts…
Nosok's replacement at his job. Thoughts?

No one wants my job! I would do anything to have a job like Iowa. I like my sleep and being home at a decent time in the evenings so I chose a different profession. I would have enough pride to step away from my position if I knew I wasn’t reaching my goals to help the people that I work with!

But you don't have enough integrity to not create public conversation about another man's job status

I appreciate hearing someone take up the case against quick termination. It's good for the overall discussion.

But here's the thing: Fran's contract runs through the 2027-28 season. There would have to be an astronomical change in results to warrant an extension beyond that. Plus, he would be nearly 70 by then. There is virtually no way Fran McCaffery is coaching at Iowa beyond 2028.

So, in other words, McCaffety is basically a lame duck right now, and will get lamer with each successive year. More and more, this will work against us in recruiting. And none of these facts will change a year from now, other than the cost of the buyout getting smaller. (You also can't count on the talent pool of replacements being any better ... even if there are more attractive candidates, the competition for their services could make them more difficult to hire.)

The one thing we know is that Fran will not be coaching at Iowa beyond 2028. Knowing that, it makes sense to me the pull the trigger now and start breathing new life into the program immediately. Why wait? It might save money, but you run the risk of having an even deeper hole to dig out of. And, you are bleeding revenue every year as ticket sales remain stagnant. Besides that, with the way this season has gone, you have the political capital right now to make the change. I think it would be very popular.

I think there is far more to be gained by making the move now than by waiting.
Well Beth is at a billionaires house on the golf course of Phoenix Open so maybe she is securing some cash. :)

What the hell are you talking about crazy! This is why we have these types of forum as fans! I have every right to create a dialogue about “another man’s” job status when it comes to a program that I’ve watched for over 40 years of my life. This coach has made millions of dollars in his tenure at Iowa and has zero sweet 16 appearances! I feel that most of the fans on this board agree that it’s time for a change!

huh? this makes no sense at all
That's really sad that evidently there are so many of you that feel that way.

I was raised to never interfere with another man's family, religion, or opportunity to make an honest living.

I get that coaching at the big ten level is a public position. Some conversation about your job in the public is expected as part of it.

But I just don't agree with people taking the initiative to create mass conversation about another man's job status. I find it quite disgusting. How would you guys like it if everyone were out there broadcasting to the public that you shouldn't have your job?

None of that makes it a right thing to do

I've been looking at a few articles about candidates to replace Woodson at Indiana, and there are a few names I've seen that we should probably discuss here. (Worth mentioning, I've seen both DeVries and McCollum mentioned in multiple articles as well ... not necessarily as leading contenders, but rather among the names being thrown at the wall.)

Would any of these guys be a good fit at Iowa, if there's an opening here?
I'm not in any way endorsing any of these guys ... just throwing some names out there for discussion.

No, to Will Wade. Too much baggage.

Also, thinking about Indiana, and their current predicament, wouldn't it be poetic justice if their next hire was Alford?

Indiana fans will demand a bigger name than any of these.

For calling for anybody that hasn't engaged in moral wrongdoing to be fired
Man people have been fired for less! Wrongdoing has nothing to do with getting canned! People aren’t going to games or even watching on tv! If you don’t see that as a problem Connor! Your dad needs to set sail back to the East coast and be grateful he got 15 years here!

Whether Fran should be fired or not IS NOT THE POINT

The Fran era should have been over yesterday. It is without question time for iowa to move on to the next chapter.
