Fran’s replacement

I could get behind McCollum if that's the way it goes.

But I have two lingering concerns:
  1. Can he recruit at the top level? Developing lower-rated talent is great, but to compete at the highest level, you've got to have a few top-notch guys coming in.
  2. Style of play. I caught one of Drake's recent games on the TV, and it was kind of jarring to see players slowly walking the ball up the court after a made basket on the other end. That said, at the end of the day, I'm more worried about being successful than any particular style of play. But fans would need to prepare themselves for something significantly different than what we are accustomed to.
I welcome any response to ease my concerns.

I think he could recruit for the Big Ten, doubt it would be countless 5 start kids. This dude doesnt need 5 stars to win, I think he recruits to what he wants/needs and coaches the hell out of his kids. His style of play, I think he plays to what his roster dictates. The roster he has this year at Drake, he's playing the way he as to, to win games.

Listen to him talk about why he is playing the style he is right now… he says he doesn’t the amount of shooters he has had in the past, so they do want to jack up quick shots right now with his personnel. If he has the right personnel, they will play faster and with more fluidity as his teams at northwest did.

He really leans into the strategy he thinks will win games based on his personnel, their opponents and the scouting report.

He is all about winning.
The longer I think about it, the more and more his style reminds me of Izzo. His teams run when it is there but they do it selectively and under control. They rebound and defend like no other and his players are tough.

I am all in on McCollum. If Iowa doesn't go get him, he is going to be going somewhere soon.

I appreciate all those who have provided great information and background on McCollum. Very helpful. I would have no problem getting behind him as the next Hawkeye coach.

That said, I would also encourage everyone to be cautious about getting too attached to the prospects of McCollum and/or DeVries. While both could be possibilities, there are a lot of other potential coaches out there who could also be good options. Remember, when we hired McCaffery, very few folks had him on their radar. Same thing with Lickliter.

If we do make a coaching change this spring, there's a good chance the new coach will be someone whose name has yet to surface on the message boards.

Really worth the watch and thanks for posting. I am even more impressed with Coach McCollum now than before the interview. His perspective about getting better every day and results would take care of themselves is very true IMO from my own experience in business. I really feel the guy has the "IT" factor, reserved confidence, and the communication skills to be successful no matter where he is coaching.

I have been a DeVries fan for quite some time and feel Iowa would be fortunate to have either DeVries or McCollum at Iowa.
