Chris Doyle doing live interview w/ Keith Murphy at 12:00 CT Today

I think Doyle is a case where both narratives are right.

On the one hand, the guy was fantastic at his craft. He was legit one of, if not THE BEST, S&C coach in the entire country. That really isn't debatable.

On the other hand, the guy was a first-class asshole. And that also isn't debatable. And as the years went on, it got worse, because KF essentially enabled him by not holding him accountable for the tremendous attrition happening with African American players. It was poo-poo'd as "they weren't 'Iowa' players".

Because they weren't Iowa players. The Iowa players remained Iowa players.

Ferentz did what he had to do in the face of pressure from biggest the morons on the planet. I bet he regrets it to this day. I wish Kirk and the University didn't fold. Such a disappointment that any of htose idiots got a dime. Doyle should still be the S&C coach

he would still be the coach if he would not have come out and had his own press conference after everyone told him to lay low

The "best strength and conditioning coach in the entire country" would have been smart enough not to do a workout after winter break, that after which athletes went to the hospital with rhabdomyolysis. One of those athletes was named Willie Lowe and sued, ending up with the University of Iowa having to pay $15,000. And instead of firing his ass, Kirk gave Doyle an award.

Doyle wasn't just an asshole, he was a STUPID asshole. Kirk decided to side with Doyle until it became too dangerous to his future as head football coach at Iowa to continue doing so, which is when he threw Doyle under the bus during the racial discrimination allegations.

I am surprised Chris survived that, to be honest. That was ugly.

If anyone besides that buffoon Barta had been AD back then, Doyle would have been fired immediately, because Kirk would have been afraid that if he didn't fire him, then he'd be given his walking papers too. I've always been surprised that Iowa was able to get anyone decent to join the team after that, because it was national news.

I'm surprised KF didn't say, "if you railroad this dude and boot him, I'm leaving too."

IIRC, Kirk was out of town recruiting when the players were hospitalized and one of the dads was very vocal that Kirk should have rushed back to Iowa City if he really cared about his players.

Doyle was exactly what Kirk wanted him to be. You think the captain let him run against the grain and didn't hold him accountable? Laughable. Kirk has his hand in everything and Doyle did his bidding. When shit hit the fan Kirk let him take the fall.

Kirk's son was accused of racist behavior and comments as well. It's also well known he's a giant asshole, wonder why he got to stay. Hmmmmm

I think that purely from a football perspective, Iowa football would have been a whole lot better off if the situation with Doyle and Brian were reversed.

No offense but I will rely on the investigation conducted by Husch Blackwell which specifically found that the program, mainly Chris Doyle, “perpetuated racial and cultural bias”.
You trust the law firm, and not the lived experiences of many players who went through the program that came to Doyle’s defense? A number which far outnumbered those who were involved in the lawsuit?

Yes, he should have - especially because his son James was on the team at the time, whether or not he was hospitalized which is something none of us will ever know.

You know. I have been thinking Doyle was a total piece of trash for the last 4 years or so, but it sounds like he's done some self reflection and is taking accountability for his actions for the most part. While he never explicitly owns up to treating black players differently he does recognize that he was not empathetic to the fact that people come from a variety of different backgrounds. It sounds like he has grown. I am wiling to forgive him and believe everyone deserves a second chance.

Husch Blackwell is a very well respected law firm with extensive experience in investigations with a long list of universities who have used their services. The answer is yes, I trust their findings. U of I President Wilson, AD Barta, and Kirk Ferentz all accepted the findings of the Husch Blackwell report. Ferentz publicly apologized

The federal lawsuit is a an entirely separate matter. Only a small fraction of the current and former players interviewed by HB joined the lawsuit. The HB report did not conclude that laws were violated

The player lawsuit alleged civil rights infractions which violated federal law. Would the players have proved their case to a jury? We’ll never know because the University agreed to settle the matter just before trial.

I personally believe that the Plaintiffs case was weak but Iowa coughed up $4M rather than make their case before a jury.

So the same law firm that investigated also recruited players to join a lawsuit? Seems like a conflict of interest if this was supposed to be an unbiased investigation. IDK Or am I wrong & HB is not the firm who instigated the suit?? Not sure how to read this.

HB did the investigation, a different lawfirm represented the players in the lawsuit.

Some nuggets:

Chris Doyle said that he hoped that the case against the University of Iowa would go to court because “there was another side of this story that never got to be told.”

Says that once it got into the system and you saw depositions— “there was a very different story told than on social media.”
