Chris Street

I was in the Navy stationed in PA and had just come back from a flight........standing in operations in my flight suit after the flight, one of my friends who knew I was a big Hawk fan came over and told me........remember it like it was yesterday.

Pretty crazy that they were able to have the snow plow driver on. Completely understand him declining interviews previously.

Didn't say a lot, but he added that he has pain over that tragic day, but nothing like the Street family.

What made it even more tragic is that the driver's older brother and sister had been hit by a Johnson County snowplow themselves years earlier. His brother was killed and his sister permanently injured, so he had to relive all those emotions from the opposite perspective.

I had no idea that the lights on the Johnson County snow plows used to be high up, which made the plows seem further away. It makes sense that Chris would think it was safe to pull out

Didn't know the Streets sued as a result, either
I remember the lawsuit. There were some unflattering comments and findings.

2 days ago I was at a Subway getting a $5.99 footlong (use 599FOOTLONG in the app)

2 guys came in, distraught. The driver claimed he had a green light approaching an intersection and a snow plow did not stop (when he had a red light); he asked if snow plows had the right of way. The passenger said that if they had collided, he would have taken the worst of the impact. It was kinda bizarre because I knew this "anniversary" was coming up.

Correct. And then the Street's ended up losing and having to pay.

Pence received death threats at home and at work so was completely overwhelmed by the situation and rightfully so. But the one thing he and his side did wrong in all of this was when the verdict was announced they held their celebration party at the Highlander. Not a great look.

That team, with Street, was probably Elite 8 level. With some luck? Maybe a Final Four.

They had a lot of internal issues that would have made it hard to go that far...Chris' death brought them together and made them a "team", but without his death the factions in the program would have been quite a bit to overcome.

I just watched the B1G story on Chris, most special (and new) moments for me in priority...

1. Early Chris Street video footage when he was really young, probably in Humeston house, very cool!!!!
2. Gary Close - they were tight, you could tell he still hurts. Dr. Tom to a lesser but an important degree.
3. Jordon Bohannon - very, very, very, very cool (would be #1 but not new) - that was soooooo coooool!!!
4. Val Barnes - I don't recall him seeing an interview from him
5. Charles Vance - not his fault, let it go, let's move on...

Never heard about the celebration at the Highlander.

It was quite a moment to share the history with my sons last night. I remember doing an iowa basketball camp a few years ago and one of them saw the plaque in the tunnel and we briefly talked about Chris. Tonight it came full circle for him and he got to hear the entire story.

As a parent now it’s like I’m watching it unfold through a different lens. I was a senior in HS working as a dishwasher at the Highlander that night. Living in IC it was a gut punch for the whole community. All the kids wore CS40 tshirts around school. The pain of loss was everywhere.

After watching my youngest told me he wants to pick #40 for his basketball jersey next year. Passing his story down to another generation makes me so beyond happy.

I really hope NW's cancelation was legit after seeing Chris Collins on that documentary. You know there was no way in hell he wanted to play at Carver on CMS remembrance night

For me when younger it use to be about Chris the basketball player, #40, that stuff. Now, as a parent, it’s the thought of Chris dying at such a young age and never getting to experience his own kids and family. When Kenyon was talking about the thought of Chris today and the friend he doesn’t have, watching their kids grow up, etc…. that was tough.

Where did Val Barnes end up?
I believe he is still in IC/Coralville area. I think he had a son who played bball at West and graduated last year. I thought he had a younger son playing as well, but I don't see him listed on the ICW roster so I'm not sure where any of them are currently....

Did he play any pro ball? Looking at his stats, averaged 16 ppg?

He was working in the QC last summer, I think, at Alfa Romeo…but they closed so not sure where he is now

Did a little google search. This is from last year but it's pretty cool with the names I put in bold.

"The Trojans recently regained the services of senior point guard Christian Barnes (son of former Iowa Hawkeye Val Barnes but have lost junior forward Savion Taylor (a 10.5-point-per-game scorer) for the rest of the season with a knee injury and subsequent surgery.

Barnes added 12 points here for West, with forward Kareem Earl (son of former Hawkeye Acie Earl) leading the way with 15 points. Top scorer Pete Moe (son of former Hawkeye Jeff Moe) came in averaging about 24 a game but went scoreless in the first half and ended with nine.

Freshman Jack McCaffery (son of Iowa head coach Fran McCaffery) came in as West’s second-leading scorer this season but was blanked, though he was a factor in the second half on the boards."

Didn't know Kris was named after CMS.

It had to be very difficult for those guys to go forward after that roller coaster low of his death, to high of the Michigan win, and then back to dealing with his passing. Had to be difficult to sleep those nights.

AC, CMS, Winters, Webb, Murray, Millard, Barnes, Smith, Glasper, Bartels, Lookingbill...that was Davis' best team outside of 87 and 88. Amazing they still finished 3rd in the B1G (2nd if you discount the cheaters in Ann Arbor) with all they dealt with.

In the trial, his girlfriend also said Chris was looking at her when he pulled out and likely hadn't even seen the plow coming (or something to that effect). The defense basically acknowledged that was a major contributing factor in Chris bearing full responsibility.

I remember I didn't learn about the crash until the next morning, maybe Sioux City didn't have all the news yet or more likely I just didn't stay up for the sports that night. The next morning my dad told us and I remember just being numb but not emotional because of the shock. I was in 7th grade and first period at school in Reading class we had a test and in the middle it hit me and I just burst into tears. I can still picture the tears falling on the paper. My teacher told me I could finish it later if I wanted, but I composed myself and finished it. But it's one of those moments I can remember vividly 30 years later.

Really well done documentary. I was at the 20th anniversary game against Wisconsin and remember getting a big lead, watching it evaporate, and then pulling it out, and that Eric May dunk they showed bringing down the house.
I'm from Sioux City, and I vividly remember hearing about it on the 10pm news as the lead story, the night it happened.

Kinda random, but I thought each of Jess Settles' comments were great. Particularly the last one about "Coach Davis would never admit to having a favorite player. Chris Street was his favorite player."

It was funny, sad, revealing ... all at the same time.

Just one nugget among many that made for such a great treatment of CS40.

I forgot about Hoiberg changing his uniform to #40

i dislike Him less now.
(but think he’s an awesome coach)

Can you elaborate on that a little more? I would be very interested in hearing about that. Now not knowing anything about the internal issues/problems within the program that was a very talented team, and I agree w/Fran. Street was clearly on his way to becoming an NBA player, Acie was pretty damn good, we had a damn good front court if not for the unfortunate death of Chris. Kenyon, Winters, Millard plus those 2? That's a pretty damn athletic front court. Backcourt clearly not as talented, but Val Barnes could certainly heat it up. Kind of an underrated player in my opinion.

They always show the Michigan game and make a big deal about it to the point where some might assume that was the first game after his death. Mich St game was so much better in my opinion. On the road at Mich St and playing like you would expect them to in those circumstances. Then all of a sudden, the switch turns on.
That Michigan game against the now dishonored Fab Five was the loudest game I've ever experienced in Carver. And it also featured a pre-rug Eddie Hightower.

I don't disagree that they sued for clarity. The Streets wanted the cause of the accident to come out. And they also sued for millions, correct? I believe that was disclosed. And neither of us, obviously, are condemning the Streets. If Johnson Country were negligent, they should have had to pay.
Oddly enough, after finding only Chris negligent, they passed a law requiring snow plows to move their lights from the top of the vehicle to the normal front of the plow.

I'd be curious about that as well. I'd never heard anything about team chemistry issues, but I do recall the previous season being a bit of a disappointment compared to preseason expectations. Maybe there was something there that carried over..

That 92-93 team was pretty stacked. IMO they were basically a BJ or Andre Woolridge away from #1 seed material.

That comment surprised me. A good friend was a manager on that team and has never mentioned anything like that.

While the 1996-97 team wasn't as talented, it had Dre and it was a very good team. It finished 2nd in the big 10 I think, actually first since MN had the academic cheating scandal. It also got a really shitty seed and had to face KY in the round of 32.
