Chris Street

I walked into work at a tool and die shop in Columbus, Indiana, and heard Mark Patrick from Q95 out of Indianapolis say on the radio "Tragedy Out Of Iowa City This Morning". My first, terrible thought was "Please God, Anybody But Chris Street". When he said his name, I sat down on the floor and cried.

Opened the sports section of the Orlando Sentinel, saw small headline in college b-ball section, "Iowa Player Killed in Accident". Called local Orlando Hawks, none had heard about it. We all started calling people back in IC and elsewhere in the state. One guy said Athletic Department phones rang busy or answered with some vague, generic announcement-greeting that nobody was available.

To this day I can't look at the pic with him on bench with Dr. Tom with huge smile, as if he was about to break into laughter, without tearing up.

I STILL can't believe BTN has never done a full-length feature on CMS40. But somehow, we get to see one on Nebraska or PSU guys who never played in a B1G conference game.

A coworker told me when I was having breakfast in a Wichita hotel while on a business trip. He heard the news from his wife. I was shocked. He was far too young. I loved the way he played the game. Maximum energy.

His death affected me like no other one of a person I didn't personally know. I cried when I heard the news. He was such a great kid. Kenyon, what a great tribute to name your son after your friend. Your sons even play like Chris.

How did you hear the news? I remember like it was yesterday. My dad was yelling from a different room to turn on ESPN. It was early evening on the 19th, when we did Chris Street's picture was on the screen and ESPN was covering the story. RIP Chris Street
I was watching the tv and kcci in des moines scrawled the news across the screen and then a got a call from a friend. Tearing up right now just thinking about it. People should not be taken from this earth so young!

I worked across the street from the Highlander. It was not fun driving highway 1 every morning seeing that dark spot in the road. I will always remember him.

can someone cut/paste the eulogy Dr. Tom put out for Chris? I can't seem to find it.

One of those things I'll always remember where I was, kind of like 9-11-2001. Was already living in KC, and my Dad was still taping all the Iowa games and would care package them to me so I could watch them. He called that night to give me the news. As others have said its hard to fathom someone you've never met impacting so many lives. Crazy thing, I'm a little teary eyed right now just posting this. Rest in peace CMS40.....

I heard it on the radio that night in the car. I lived about 2-3 miles from the accident at the time.
I was driving back from Solon at paul reveres from work to Iowa city. Had to stop at the highlander because of the accident. Terrible night.

Lived in southern Indiana at the time and it was extremely hard to tell my then 11 year old son his favorite played had died the morning after the accident.

I was home in Peoria, going to Bradley. Previous year I was a grey-teamer. That year Paul Lusk and Chris lived in apartments across from Burge/Currier. I lived in Currier and frequently Paul and Chris would give me a ride back from practices.

My dad told me.

I went outside and shot free throws, stunned. Every year when this topic comes up I feel a little stunned, still.

For me, anyway, it was the first real time in my life I received the message that nothing is to be taken for granted. And what a helluva way to get that message.

Whenever I talk about my experience at Iowa as a Dr Tom grey team guy I talk about how much fun Chris made every practice, just like a type of joy for the game, for being part of a team/family, for competing and trying to achieve goals together.

That staff, Close and Pearl and Walker and Doyle were such a good mix to go with Davis. And the roster just full of good guys, also a good mix.

It was a mistake to transfer. Such fond memories.

He said his good friend Andre Woolridge was at the Highlander that night with all the other members of the team and he went over to BBptg5's house later that night and told them what happened.
you could at least quote me correctly…admit I inserted Andre‘s name in error. Was another player who let us know that night. Dre didn’t end up at our house until the next year when he had to sit out. but enjoy yourself on our site.

His legacy will never die in the Hawkeye family. Jordan purposely missing a FT so as not to break Street's record.

That night I worked late at KRNA Radio in Iowa City, just across the interstate from the accident site on Dodge St/HWY 1 north. The weather forecast called for an ice storm, so several of us were getting things done because we didn't think we'd make into the office the next day.

Left work that night and drove past what would become the wreck site a few minutes later.
Went downtown to Micky's to meet my buddy Mike Naughton, the Hawkeye ticket manager, and another friend, for conglomeration sandwiches. As we walked into Micky's, we heard all of the sirens going off from the police and fire stations two blocks away and wondered all the commotion was about.
Ate our meals, went home and got a phone call from the radio station news director telling me what had happened. The rest of the night was spent in shock.

We'd just distributed the new KRNA basketball poster that season and Chris was prominently featured in the stacked bunk bed photo during the photo sessions I attended.

Iowa City was in a state of shock until the team played their first game after the funeral, which was a shocking, come from behind victory at Michigan State. Was downtown at SPOCO watching it and can still recall the wild street celebration that followed that stunning victory.

Being at the Michigan home game next was the most emotional event, next to the birth of my children, that I'll experience.

Do you remember which player?

Lived in So Cal at the time. I was a manufacturer rep for a company and was helping a retailer out when we played Duke, his last game. I kept an eye on the TV(most were turned on to the Iowa/Duke game thanks to me) while I helped the retailer and just kept thinking no matter if we win or lose we are going to win a bunch more with Chris. The Wednesday morning I heard the news and was just stunned and just walked around the entire Belmont Shore area of Long Beach for hours. Called in sick. Did not want to see or speak to any of my customers. I really did not know what else to do.

would it make a difference? LOL. 90% of the people here are just looking for anything they can be negative about. so it would be the same either way.
I’m just curious. That’s all.
