Chris Street

While the 1996-97 team wasn't as talented, it had Dre and it was a very good team. It finished 2nd in the big 10 I think, actually first since MN had the academic cheating scandal. It also got a really shitty seed and had to face KY in the round of 32.
And damn near beat them! The 90's seemed like the Hawks faced Kentucky, UConn, or Duke every Tournament.

And damn you Rodney Rogers!

He was working in the QC last summer, I think, at Alfa Romeo…but they closed so not sure where he is now
Darn it, I was interested in getting one someday but noticed the dealership was closed last year. Didn't know I would have had a chance to interact with a former hawkeye.

Can you elaborate on that a little more? I would be very interested in hearing about that. Now not knowing anything about the internal issues/problems within the program that was a very talented team, and I agree w/Fran. Street was clearly on his way to becoming an NBA player, Acie was pretty damn good, we had a damn good front court if not for the unfortunate death of Chris. Kenyon, Winters, Millard plus those 2? That's a pretty damn athletic front court. Backcourt clearly not as talented, but Val Barnes could certainly heat it up. Kind of an underrated player in my opinion.

I’m out the door on my way to practice…will reply in depth when I get home.

I just watched the B1G story on Chris, most special (and new) moments for me in priority...

1. Early Chris Street video footage when he was really young, probably in Humeston house, very cool!!!!
2. Gary Close - they were tight, you could tell he still hurts. Dr. Tom to a lesser but an important degree.
3. Jordon Bohannon - very, very, very, very cool (would be #1 but not new) - that was soooooo coooool!!!
4. Val Barns - I don't recall him seeing an interview from him
5. Charles Vance - not his fault, let it go, let's move on...
I guess I am one of the few that don't like what Bohannon did.

Yes, it was a selfless and touching thing to do. But if Chris were alive I would bet any amount of money that not only would he disapprove of what he did, he would actually be cheering for Jordan to break his record.

But he isn’t alive and under the circumstances, I think he did the right thing.

Terrible seed that year. Then the next year got passed over by Indiana for a spot in NCAA tournament. Iowa beat Indiana twice by double digits and had same conference record.

I think what makes it special is that it was an “active” streak when Chris was killed. Who knows where it would have ended.

If I’m JBo, it would mean more to me being on the same line, tied with Chris, than above him.

Either way, you could easily see how appreciative the Street’s were for JBo missing that FT. That’s all that matters.

1991,92, and 99 Iowa lost to eventual National champions in 2nd round. 1997 lost to NCAA runner-up kentucky. Actually 1999 loss was in sweet 16.

The weak OOC schedule in the 1997-98 year was to blame for missing the dance. That was Ricky’s one and done year and Deano’s FR year. They went on to get beat by UGa at home in the opening round of the NIT. The beginning of the end of the Dr Tom era.

The weak schedule is always brought up. Wasn't good but wasn't that much worse than Indiana's and iowa beat Indiana twice. I always felt it was more of the Knight factor.

This is probably a ticky-tack thing, but if JBo really wanted to honor Street, he could have missed the previous shot, and let Chris keep the record by himself.

Very ticky-tack and the game was probably much more in the balance on last attempt.

I have been following Iowa basketball since late 60's. Definitely lots of bad luck in NCAA tournament.
1970 loss to Jacksonville was just start of NCAA heartbreaking losses for me.
I have one less decade of heartbreak in me. Here's to hoping we'll meet up at the Final Four someday.

How did you hear the news? I remember like it was yesterday. My dad was yelling from a different room to turn on ESPN. It was early evening on the 19th, when we did Chris Street's picture was on the screen and ESPN was covering the story. RIP Chris Street
I lived in Canada and didn't get a lot of US sports. Did see the Duke game, it was on TV. Got a call from my Dad the night of his death. We both were shocked and saddened by the news.

If I recall correctly, there may have been a bit of an optical illusion apparent to Chris, the driver. It was a Johnson County snow plow that hit him and I think, double check me on this, that the blade was up off of the road as the snow plow driver was traveling north on Hwy1.

It could have looked, at a glance, like the oncoming vehicle was further away than what it really was based on the head lights above the plow blade, etc. I don't remember it being road condition related...at the time of the accident. I think there was the threat of snow/ice, but it hadn't started yet.
I think this is wrong. At the time there were no signals at the frontage road that goes to the Highlander, only a stop sign. Street would have been turning left onto 1, looking to his right, past the girlfriend. Pence was southbound on 1, likely getting close to turning west on I80 towards his home in the Oxford area. My recollection is the plow hit her side of the Street car and drove it into the path of a third vehicle, causing Chris's fatal injuries. The Pence kid should never have been sued, it just compounded the tragedy...

They had a lot of internal issues that would have made it hard to go that far...Chris' death brought them together and made them a "team", but without his death the factions in the program would have been quite a bit to overcome.

Do you care to add to this? I know a manager from that team and he has never mentioned anything like this.

That could be, I am not sure of my memory on that. Thanks. But even if he was hit on the passenger side, he may not seen or correctly recognized the oncoming plow due to the "high headlights".

Gary Close talking about waking up with a pain then remembering why and how it never goes away sticks with me the most in the documentary.

Supposedly the accident did in fact force some change or law about where the lights are placed on these trucks, SO someone must have thought they were a factor in the crash.....

Wonderful documentary. Very well done. I heard the news from a friend of mine in 8th grade. I was walking to my first period class and he grabbed me and asked if I’d heard. It was just a sad, sad time. It’s wild to imagine how much of a monster he probably would have been as a senior.

Wow. Nice to get your personal stamp on this Wade with you being a friend of CMS on that team.... ;) ;)

That night I worked late at KRNA Radio in Iowa City, just across the interstate from the accident site on Dodge St/HWY 1 north. The weather forecast called for an ice storm, so several of us were getting things done because we didn't think we'd make into the office the next day.

Left work that night and drove past what would become the wreck site a few minutes later.
Went downtown to Micky's to meet my buddy Mike Naughton, the Hawkeye ticket manager, and another friend, for conglomeration sandwiches. As we walked into Micky's, we heard all of the sirens going off from the police and fire stations two blocks away and wondered all the commotion was about.
Ate our meals, went home and got a phone call from the radio station news director telling me what had happened. The rest of the night was spent in shock.

We'd just distributed the new KRNA basketball poster that season and Chris was prominently featured in the stacked bunk bed photo during the photo sessions I attended.

Iowa City was in a state of shock until the team played their first game after the funeral, which was a shocking, come from behind victory at Michigan State. Was downtown at SPOCO watching it and can still recall the wild street celebration that followed that stunning victory.

Being at the Michigan home game next was the most emotional event, next to the birth of my children, that I'll experience.
Sorry to derail here, but the Mickey’s Conglo is an epic f’en sandwich.

I was a sports obsessed 9 year old. I knew something was up because every morning before school I would sit in front of the TV, eat breakfast and watch sportscenter and get caught up on the action I missed while I was asleep. My parents stopped me before I could and I could tell they were having a hard time telling me something. When they told me I instantly felt complete shock and then started crying. I couldn't believe it and it is to this day the worst I've felt hearing about someone passing who I never met.

I recall that BTN documentary coming out about a year ago on the 30th anniversary of Chris' tragic death. I'm almost certain it's still on my DVR but I've never watched it. I just can't.

Maybe some day.

They always show the Michigan game and make a big deal about it to the point where some might assume that was the first game after his death. Mich St game was so much better in my opinion. On the road at Mich St and playing like you would expect them to in those circumstances. Then all of a sudden, the switch turns on.
I remember being at a pool hall in Melbourne, FL with my brother and a hometown friend of his. Playing pool, slugging down beers, almost laughing at how pathetic the game was going. And then, somehow, the Hawks cut into the lead. And then, somehow, Hawks were within single digits.

We figured they gave everything to get it to OT. When the Hawks kept it going in OT, it was absolute euphoria. Three guys, amongst a bunch of Floridians, going crazy over an Iowa game in a pool hall in Melbourne, FL!
