CJ Beathard is 49'ers STARTING QB; He entered game on Sep 23 & his 1st Pass was TD Pass to Kittle

George Kittle's five catches accounted for 33.3 percent of the 49ers' total receptions on Sunday.

His 98 yards were 57.6 percent of their total receiving yards, and 43 percent of their total yards.

His touchdown was their only one of the day.

49'ers Head Coach Kyle Shanahan will ride with C.J. Beathard (2 INT's, 1 fumble, Sacked 7 times in Sunday's Loss) because he's 49ers' best QB

SANTA CLARA -- C.J. Beathard has gained a lot of experience in nearly 1½ seasons in the NFL.

On Sunday, the experience was far from positive.

Beathard and the 49ers’ offense, which had shown plenty of promise Monday in Green Bay, were overmatched and smothered in a 39-10 loss to the Los Angeles Rams at Levi’s Stadium.

Beathard completed just 15 of 27 passes for 170 yards and one touchdown with two interceptions. He also fumbled once, as the 49ers committed four turnovers, and was sacked seven times for minus-49 yards.

“Bad effort,” 49ers left tackle Joe Staley said. “We can control what we do up front, and we did a poor job today. No excuses there. Just didn’t get it done, didn’t give C.J. time. He was under duress the whole game.”

Beathard’s stat line was unsightly, but 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan agreed that a lot of different people, including himself, share the blame.

“It’s not just C.J., it’s everyone,” Shanahan said. “The quarterback -- when the ball leaves his hands -- he’s going to get credit for that turnover, but by no means is it 100 percent on C.J.

“Of course, he’s got to do better. I’ve got to do better, and we’ve got to do a lot better around him.”

Beathard started his fourth game -- all losses -- since taking over for Jimmy Garoppolo, who sustained a season-ending knee injury in the 49ers’ Week 3 loss at Kansas City.

One of Beathard’s interceptions came on a pass on which Marquise Goodwin stopped his route, allowing Rams cornerback Troy Hill to cut in front of him. Another came on a pass where safety John Johnson took the ball away from tight end George Kittle.

There hasn't been any thought given to replacing Beathard with backup quarterback Nick Mullens, Shanahan said, for one important reason.

“Because C.J. is the best quarterback we have in our building,” Shanahan said.

On Sunday, Beathard, a second-year pro, surpassed Garoppolo in career NFL pass attempts. Garoppolo has relatively little experience in five seasons due to serving as Tom Brady’s backup with the New England Patriots for 3½ seasons before a midseason trade sent him to the 49ers last year.

Garoppolo in his career has completed 236 of 361 attempts (65.4 percent) for 2,968 yards and 17 touchdowns with eight interceptions.

Beathard has nine starts since coming to the 49ers as a third-round draft pick last year. He has completed 211 of 365 attempts (57.8 percent) for 2,492 yards and 11 touchdowns with 13 interceptions.

“It’s tough,” Beathard said. “Right now we’re 1-6, and it’s not where anybody pictured us at this point and not where anybody wants to be. But the only thing you can do is get back to work tomorrow and move forward.

“We got nine games left in the regulation season. We have an opportunity really turn the season around and have a good year.”

Having saw none of the game yesterday, it sounds like the picks weren't his fault, based on the reading. The fumble is likely due to no protection; by the line of him, and by him of the ball--but that is a total guess based on history. Plus playing against what appears to be the best defenses in the league, things weren't likely to go well anyway.
Hopefully things turn around for him next time out.

yeah, both INT's were not his fault. first one? the receiver stopped running. the 2nd one? George had it and got stripped (it was an amazing defensive play)

I haven't been able to see much, but CJ does not appear to be getting help from his teammates on the o-line or at wr. Kittle seems to be the only one he can consistently count on.
Hard to know how that plays out long term for him. He's clearly not going to see the field much when garapolo comes back. But, do the niners think he's good enough to keep as a reliable back up? Has he shown enough to other teams personnel managers that he could back up somewhere else?

I think he is gonna have a long career as a back up

Hope he proves me wrong

New QB had a really solid first half (against the Raiders mind you). Unfortunately for my fantasy team, seems to like the receivers and not looking Kittle’s way as much

Kittle missed most of the first half after his reception in the first quarter. He was back in on their final drive of the half though.

Oh no kidding? Didn’t know that. Well it’s worked out for Kittle, the 9ers, and most importantly, my fantasy team

Hopefully he finds a home as a back up after this season, with the niners or elsewhere. Odds of seeing the field again as a starter don't look good.

The Patriots would be a good spot for Beathard . Even a long term backup QB in the NFL is a great job to have had. Get out healthy, wealthy and then another good job somewhere.

He needs the Rodgers treatment. Sit behind a successful QB in a stable franchise. SF used to be a dream destination. Now its the oakland of the west bay... i mean Santa Clara.

Nick Mullens will start at quarterback for 49ers vs. Giants

Quarterback Nick Mullens earned a second starting opportunity.

Coach Kyle Shanahan did not make a big announcement in front of the team. Instead, he informed Mullens and C.J. Beathard that Mullens will start Monday when the 49ers return to action against the New York Giants at Levi’s Stadium.

Mullens took the first snaps during practice on Tuesday, and confirmed Shanahan told him he would be the team's starting quarterback for at least another week. Mullens made his NFL debut on Thursday with a 34-3 victory over the Raiders.

"The team is ready to get to work and treat it like any other week," Mullens said in front of his locker at Levi's Stadium. "My preparation doesn’t change. This team’s preparation doesn’t change. And we’re excited to keep things going."

He got the starting assignment due to injuries Beathard sustained to his right wrist and thumb in the team’s 18-15 loss to the Arizona Cardinals in Week 8.

Mullens completed 16 of 22 passes for 262 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. Mullens’ 151.9 passer rating is the best debut in NFL history among quarterbacks with 16 or more pass attempts.

When asked if it was exciting for his play against the Raiders lead to another starting assignment, Mullens answered, "It is exciting, yes, sir."

Mullens is classified a first-year player after spending his entire rookie season on the 49ers’ practice squad. He originally signed with the 49ers as an undrafted free agent from Southern Mississippi. He received the promotion to the 49ers’ 53-man roster after Jimmy Garoppolo sustained a season-ending knee injury during the Week 3 game in Kansas City.

Beathard was a third-round draft pick in 2017 from Iowa. He has started 10 games in his two seasons, including five this season. The 49ers are 1-9 in those starts, including a 31-21 victory over the Giants last season at Levi’s Stadium. He has completed just 57.3 percent of his 393 career pass attempts for 2,682 yards with 12 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.

Damn it. Mullens is the starting QB moving forward.

Will CJ be on the 49'ers roster next year if Jimmy G is #1 and Mullens is #2?

We gotta remember, the teams Mullens has started against had a combined 2 wins amongst them. CJ beat the Giants last season. However, if Mullens keeps playing well, he will keep starting. He has been lucky with some of his throws tossing them in where he shouldn't and if he keeps it up, it will catch up to him eventually.

The biggest problem for CJB is fan support, which has dropped through the floor now that Mullens has played and looked good. Right or wrong, NFL fans tend to jump ship from a QB after a lot of losing. Shanahan knows there is a lot more to the equation, and he'll be the first to point to the 1-8 start Cousins had with the Redskins. Unfortunately, that isn't going to change it up, and it's Mullens' team until he messes it up. They will probably angle to deal one away, so it could get interesting for SF in the off-season. I'd guess both QBs will be on someone's roster in 2019.

Meanwhile in SF, George Kittle is going to be on billboards soon.

Hopefully, CJ showed enough good things that some other team's like him as a back up. Unless mullens completely goes in the toilet I suspect they'll keep him as the #2 when garoppolo returns next season.

23 year old Nick Mullens continues to start for the 49'ers; this is his 5th straight start for the 2-10 (soon to be 3-10?) 49'ers

Hopefully CJ lands on his feet somewhere next season
