CJF

Need to get in an environment where CJF et al know they aren't gonna be getting their heads taken off going to the basket or just running the offense. Get out of the hand-check/physical BiG and Iowa might be able to get back to the free-wheeling style they're most comfortable running.

Refs in the NCAA hopefully aren't gonna allow the mugging that goes on in the BiG every February and March.

He wasn’t terrible defensively, but we expect more from him, especially on the opponents end. I wonder how much his injury still bothers him.

WhAgree that he got hit a lot on his drives. It seems that in most games he is shooting 5-6 free throws. When he didn’t get the calls he gave up on the drives. I think that was big in this game. Not to be “whiney”, but that and the no 3 second calls on Kofi—why have the rule. I counted 10 seconds more than once. It is very difficult to defend any big when they are allowed in the lane as long as they want.

The officiating was clearly being called for Illinois in the first half. More subtle in the second half.

But, end of the day, Iowa shoots another 12-14 free throws, which are just some of the no calls, this is a very different game. That is how the officials produce a preferred outcome. The Cheatin' Illini are good and probably would win anyway. Don't forget we didn't shoot a free throw for more than the last quarter of the game in Champaign. It would be interesting to see what would had if the officials were on the square.

On any team that guards us that close, Fran needs too start early and be all over the refs for holding, checking and when a guy like Kofi can just chest butt a 265 lb center and knock him backwards 5', he needs to be called for offensive foul...Otherwise Garza doesn't need to fake, just plow them over in the lane..

And that is where the double standard occurs. Iowa pulls that shit and its at least a foul.

this this this. When you get to the end of the first half and we have more fouls than illinois any reasonable basketball fan can realize this is not going to be our game. We should definitely be able to play better when we get away from some of these big 10 refs.

I like CJ's game a lot and agree he is an X factor come the tournament. Whether it's injury, confidence, pressing or the fact he is typically matched up against an athletic freak like Ayo which is going to empty your tank fast, who knows?

1) I think CJ needs to be more self-aware. He has a great dribble drive game but gets in too deep. Stop a dribble or two sooner, go up under control and take a jumper and use the board.
2) Fran needs to get more creative with substitutions for CJ. Put Perkins in for him at the 5 minute mark, let him catch his breath and sub him in for Jbo vs. Joe T. or some variation of this. Seems like CJ runs the tank to empty early / is not back to game conditioning level yet.

CJ needs to complete those shots. If you can only make those without contact, you need to find another game . Cj left about 10 points off the floor.

Toussant need to find a way to play the game without ending up on the floor.i have never seen a player fall as often as he does. new shoes?

I don't remember seeing a player like Curbello stand over a player on the floor using his hands like that. I think it was JBo on the floor. Not sure. The only guess I have is that Curbello was trying to get a turnover or force JBo to call a timeout.

Curbello made some huge plays in the game, and is incredibly quick, but he got away with a couple of clear fouls, especially against JoeT. Although the media talks non-stop about Ayo and Kofi, the freshman guards for Illannoy are really good and made most of the key plays when Iowa threatened late.

He was horrible today- missed too many bunnies.
Jump stops...........but that was half the team yesterday.

Funny enough, when they started using jump stops, they either finished or were fouled.

Oh well........................................but not really.

Stop with the fouls crap. If they were there, they hid them well enough to not get called. ( also a talent worked on in practice including Iowa). it isnt a foul until its called.

We got beat by a beter team. If we had Nunge, we might have pulled it off. Garze would have played more aggressively if Nunge plays. garza CANT foul out

It seems you're implying that if the player isn't one dimensional, scoring only, the player had a horrible game.
I respectfully disagree, but we're both still fans of the Hawk's players.

Thats the problem in beating teams like Illinois. Their starters were not one dimensional. If you and the team wants to go where they say, cant have that.
