Climbing Mt. Everest

I attempted Quandry in late March. Had a spring snowstorm on the attempt. Made it maybe 2 miles up the trail and maybe 1,500 feet of gain. Couldn’t hack it due to altitude. The month prior I did the Grand Canyon rim to rim to rim hike (50ish miles 12K feet of gain over 4 days) without any issues at all. Hiking at altitude is different and WAY harder than most realize.

I did Quandary several years back with our adult kids. The rock field above the treeline was unexpectedly difficult, even within the “trail”. The scree pretty much forced you to be sure of every step to avoid a fall.
It was truly amazing to get up to an area with admittedly small glaciers around in the shade. Wowzers. Looking down to our start point was very cool and rewarding.
The sun was relentless on us on the shadeless ground and we were all sunburnt and dehydrated afterwards.

There was a fair number of folks going up/down and we would sometimes pass peeps, sometimes get passed as our energy ebbed and flowed. It was pretty much a party atmosphere up top as we shared food and celebrated the top.
We hope to get back soon to notch another 14’r.

I ended up doing it again last September along with Bierstadt 2 days later in prep for doing Whitney. Made the summit after my failure last March. 3 of the 14ers down, many to go!

Heading to the Grand Canyon in <2 weeks to do the rim to rim to rim hike again. Very excited.
