I really admire Conner. His academics are top notch. He's a leader. Tough as nails, and has been a great benefit to the team, and its culture. I think he will be a superior coach someday, if he chooses that path.

Currently, he is not the best point guard, wing, or forward on the team. Maybe not even second best at any of those spots. But he still has value.

I've never watched him play baseball.

And, I wish football would have been his sport. Seems his athleticism, leadership, throwing accuracy (with a round ball), and body could have made him a fantastic QB prospect.

Seems like a great young man. The kind I am always proud to cheer on.

Poor shooter, non-athletic, slow, can't defend, 58% FT shooter... he'd be the 4th guy off the bench for most other top-20 teams. He starts for us. Because his last name is McCaffery.

He might be a great guy. Doesn't mean he deserves the disproportionate minutes he's getting over other guys who bring a bigger upside but just don't have as fortunate a last name.

Sorry, just the truth.

How a coaches son can be a sub 60% FT shooter is beyond me. I cannot wrap my head entirely around a coaches son not being able to complete a fundamental, stationary, task with such low consistency.

Can’t shoot? He doesn’t even attempt shots, much less miss them.

He can feed the ball to his more talented teammates, but doesn’t really bring much to the table other than having a knack for not turning the ball over. He wouldn’t start at Drake, much less any other B1G team (even Nebraska).

Patrick is a much better player than Conor and probably should be getting each other’s minutes.

Steven Izzo, Jack Hoiberg, and Tyler Underwood say hi...........3 B1G coaches son’s currently with lower career FT % than Connor

I understand that it happens, I don't understand how it happens. I get that there are many coaches sons that are shit at basketball I would just think of all of the things one would pick up it would be that.

He is a role player who has been put in a starting spot by his coach, who happens to be his dad. I don't support the nepotism theory or question his effort. He just isn't a major minute player and certainly not a starter in the big ten. He is a fierce competitor and doesn't back down from a challenge which I am sure is what Fran thinks justifies him starting. At the end of the day he does not create a match up problem for any team and is a 3ppg scorer. Just not enough production to merit the PT in my opinion.

How about that sweet cross court pass from CMac?! I saw that and thought it probably made it through because of his baseball background.... trying to add some positivity to the discussion 😉
That was a set play from the get-go, first possession of the 2nd half I believe. It was a good pass and play, but he doesn't make it if it's not pre-planned, IMO.

Would like him to make more free throws. That's the only criticism I have

Nah, he just puts a 58% FT shooter who isn't fast, can't play D, has very little offensive game, on the court in the vital minutes of a game. So sure, not dad's fault.

Connor has only shot 20 FTs all season. The last 3 games Luka has shot 21 at 52% and Weiskamp has shot 56% on his last 23 FT attempts. In the past all 3 of these players have proven to be capable from the line.

Agree but I guess I thought it was a pass not too many guys can make as it looked like a fairly tight window and needed some zip on it too.

So you're comparing Connor's entire season FT % to Luka's and Weezy's for the last 3 games. Seems legit.

If CM has only shot 20 FTs all season and is shooting 58% he has zero business being out there at crunch time. Sorry.

Lol Tyler Underwood is a walkon who has played a total of 90 seconds this year. In three years at Illinois, he is 3-5 from the line in garbage time. He basically serves as an unofficial coach in practice.

So...where do you coach?
Where did you play?

And before I get blasted, you are taking to task a player that opposing coaches single out for praise, a kid who led the NCAA in Assist to turnover ratio last year. How the f_ _ k do you think you have the knowledge to criticize him? Please elaborate.

Sorry Mrs. McCaffery, your son seems like a fine young man. He just shouldn't play as much. And if his dad wasn't the coach, he wouldn't. If I was an opposing coach I'd single him out for praise too in the hope that Fran would hear it and continue to keep him on the court. Smart guys.

What coach is going to criticize an opposing player unless he's outright dirty?

That stat does about as much for a team as the stat about us making more FT's than our opponents attempt.

I am comparing approximately the last 20 shot by each of the 3 players (which yes happens to be the entire season for Connor) JW shooting 68% when he should be 80%+ has hurt more would you be happy if Connor had made 2 more FTs to put him at approx. the same % as Joe? Yes, seems legit. In the 4 B1G losses Connor has missed 2 FTs. Luka and Weezy have combined for nearly 20 missed FTs in those 4 games. But go ahead and cry about CM’s FT shooting costing us games. Look I said before the season that I didn’t like Connor starting and thought he would be more valuable off the bench. And he has not played nearly as well as I had hoped but he’s shown in the past he’s pretty clutch at the FT line late in games. He probably should be getting less minutes than a couple of the bench guys but some of the criticism is just laughable.

I like Connor’s on-court demeanor and everything he brings in terms of offensive efficiency (assist:turnover). He’s got leadership skills. But if you have glaring liabilities like shooting, free throw shooting and defense? Man, you better be 10/10 in every other category.

When cmac misses a free throw Fran gets pissed he lets out a yell and bangs his fists against his legs, kind of interesting to see because he shows hardly any emotion when he does something good

A result of Fran knowing what will be posted online 😀

Wow, you can't complain about Garza much but that's just unacceptable from 2 guys who think they have nba futures. Especially weezy who's shooting is going to have to get him there. Connors 20 attempts are further proof how little pressure he puts on a defense, 15-20 mins tops

I’m not complaining just making the point that Connor’s FT shooting is WAY down the list of things to complain against. Did you miss where I said “all 3 have proved capable from the line in the past”? Hardly “complaining” rather pointing out what was costly.
