Coaches poll - 15 votes!

...especially preseason polls. They're all on reputation and prediction.

MSU barely beat Utah St at home, now lost on the road to an unranked ASU. They don't deserve to be in the polls.

ASU is ranked....

Even in the short term the ranking (or lack thereof) doesn't matter. Only thing that matters for the ranking is the Wiscy game. Only four possible outcomes and they all depend on Sep. 22. Either we're ranked going into the game and we lose- we won't be ranked after that or we're not ranked going into the game and we lose- still unranked. We are ranked going into the game and we win- will still be ranked. Or we aren't ranked going into the game and we win- we will be ranked. It's that simple.

Utah somehow gained more points this week after beating NIU 17-6 in a game that was closer than the score (Utah got a pick six with a little over two minutes last to seal the game). Doesn’t make sense given what Iowa did to NIU.

Yeah, a win against Wisky will do it, and whether we'd have magically jumped into the rankings today or not, a loss to Wisky would have knocked us back out.
So if we into the W game at 3-0, and ranked say 20th and lost a close game to #3 or 4 Wisconsin, you think we would drop? Why exactly......

LOL, got me. But it kinda proves the circular logic. They're ranked because they beat MSU, which was ranked solely on preseason hype...not performance...and they shouldn't be ranked as high as they are now.

Still a big difference being ranked say 20th and beating say #3 Wisconsin, and not having votes before.

We would definitely drop. That's how polls work. If we were 20th, we'd have a chance to stay 24-25, but yes, we'd drop. Doesn't matter anyway at this point. We'll be unranked into that game.

Ya, we are pretty popular with the voters, aren't we

LOL. Michigan state is still ranked, which means I don't care about 1-24. What a joke

Not ranked prior to the wisky game is without much import at this point in the season.

Why would anyone rank Iowa in the top 25 right now?
How about some context. Look at other teams in the current poll. Does MSU deserve to be ranked? Its not supposed to be about what you did last year. In all honesty, how many of the current top 25 teams have beaten two opponents as good as NIU, and ISU so far this season, and sit 2-0?

ASU is a tough place for a midwestern team to win. Night game, the heat, and nasty fans. Remember our trip out there a few years ago?

Although we did get drilled at ASU in 2004 (44 - 7), you sure you aren’t referring to Arizona in 2010 (34 - 27 or some such; many on here bitching about punk AZ fans)?

Aren't you using last year to say Iowa has a decent resume?
What has NIU or ISU done this year?
If Isu goes 1-5 to start the year, our resume will look pretty weak.....

#24 MSU, #25 ASU

That my friends is why these polls are ridiculous.
I have to agree....And what do you think the polls would be if Iowa ( unranked) beats #4 Wisconsin? I'll give you 10-to-1 that Wisc. would still be rated higher in the polls...I'm sure there are 10 polls and you might find one with Iowa higher but the coaches poll would be Wisc.

When Iowa beat OSU last year, should they have been ranked higher than OSU? How about two weeks later after Wisconsin and Purdue? Should ISU have been ranked higher than Oklahoma after they beat them?
Polls are, and always have been flawed. They are popularity contests. Even if the voters are trying to be objective, they have to factor in the body of work and the POTENTIAL of the respective teams. For example, should Syracuse have instantly been ranked after they beat Clemson last year? How about the year ISU beat Oklahoma St when they were undefeated and looking like a NC contender?
Win and things work out in the long run.

Iowa has two solid but unspectacular home wins over two decent opponents. They have done nothing but solidify their spot in the 30-something range where they started in the preseason.

I’m pretty sure that those who complain that early season polls are meaningless are the same people who complain that Iowa isn’t ranked high enough in them.
