Cook has a chance to be really special. The kid attacks the rim ( something no one on this team does), he can rebound, he can run and he's a strong kid. What will make him special is if he can develop a better offensive game.
You do realize that he will be a Basabe clone as a freshman. We are going to be undersized next year.
I like cook as a player, but he going to need some help, otherwise he will be shut out. There is not a single player on Iowa's current roster that will scream double team. Iowa's post game is going to be in trouble.
You are equating 7ft as making you a better player. Wagner already is outplaying Woody..another 6'9 guy that can jump and defend is just what the doctor ordered. However, we need some guard play....we just don't have it this year.
Or he could be more of a Caleb Swanigan. And I'm comfortable with Uhl, who has experience at the 5, and Wagner, who has shown himself to be a tenacious rebounder, in the postYou do realize that he will be a Basabe clone as a freshman. We are going to be undersized next year.

That is what my point is. Teams will not be running out to Iowa and Cook will get doubled team because he is our "top" recruit. recruit rankings to me mean nothing. I mean woody and gessell were top 100 recruits and they are good players, but look at IU.
IU gets the top 50 players and their classes are all top 30
Iowa gets top 100 players and we get 1 top 30 class in the last 5 years. Just goes to show, and even it is a 3pt loss, the hustle plays and 50/50 balls were key. IU's players out hustled Iowa.
We were not out hustled. Did you even watch the game? We were out shot from 3 point line. They shot 11 of 22 3's and 50% overall while we shot 42% and 38%. We had 8 more offensive rebounds, more steals and less turnovers. We missed bunnies and some open jumpers.
several key plays tonight where IU beat Iowa to the ball
And I suppose none when we beat them to the ball.
Completely agree. Throw in some good outside shooters with Jok, Baer, Jones and Uhl. Seems like more of a Fran team. I could see them being better as a team in so many different areas next year. Could rebound better, their length could be a factor on both ends, better zone team, better trapping team, better transition team and better shooting team. I could see all these things next year. Not saying it's going to happen but I could see it. I'm going to stay optimistic about next year and not doom and gloom.Really looking forward to next years team. Bunch of 6'5 - 6'9 long athletes attacking, gonna be fun to watch.

Uhl has never been a 5... we've mostly just plugged him in as a 5 in the middle in a 2-3 when we're spelling Woody. IDK if Wagner or Cook can play man against a true 5. If not, we'll probably see less man next year. Probably more 2-3 or match-up zone. We've seen great 2-3 this year and god-awful 2-3. Seems like we played more match-up earlier in the year this year. We've also slimmed the rotation considerably this year. Maybe we try to run more bodies next year with more of the 3/4 court trap zone?
Dav is dead right. I'm excited that next year's team is months and months away.God I love this boards enthusiasm, but in what sense is our line up next year going to be better than this year?
I am sorry but Iowa had the guard play, the returning big man and a mis-match POY candidate. How will they be better next year?
I just do not see it. I realize that Uhl/Baer/Jok and others are returning, but Jok is the only player who can score. Baer will be a liability on defense. Uhl is not that skilled on offense. He will struggle. Who do we have that can create their own shot? No One!
Lets face it, Iowa will be a mid/bottom team in the Big Ten next year. Not a lot of talent there.
Guys get better. Defense is the easiest to teach. Shooting is the hardest. Look at how much Gesell and Clemmons have improved on their outside shot. It's not really that great. Not really going to argue if you can't see potential in Uhl and Baer for next year. I guess we just differ in opinion with that. Guys that can create their own shot next year are Jok, Uhl and possibly some other guys. I say possibly because you don't know based on the lack of playing time. I would say Wagner and Williams could possibly be those guys. But who can really create their own shots on this team? You can't see us being a better zone team, trapping team, more athletic team, a longer team, better 3 point shooting team? If you can't see that I don't know what your watching. We lose our 2 worse shooters on the team at positions that are shooting positions. Lose our 2 shortest players. Lose our 2 worst rebounders in Gesell and Clemmons although Jok is right there with them. Lose our least athletic player. I see potential for next year. If you want to be doom and gloom before the season even starts then you have that right.God I love this boards enthusiasm, but in what sense is our line up next year going to be better than this year?

we are not syracuse. Teams know how to dissect the zone. Unless Fran can find a couple of 6-10 "athletes" who can be at the top of the zone, we are screwed.
If Iowa plays a 2-3 zone, we are in trouble. We will struggle to stop it.
REALLY? He was recruited for one thing and one thing only, the chance to play right away....Help for next year was needed and he was recruited that way. He is Fran's next Melsohnhow long until he transfers? The question at this point is 'Will he make it to Iowa City?'
A lot of basketball left this year but next year's team should be more athletic.Really looking forward to next years team. Bunch of 6'5 - 6'9 long athletes attacking, gonna be fun to watch.
Uhl is a disaster. The kid if his outside shot isn't falling, he is a non factor. He likes to drive, but he goes out of control and throws up bricks. Uhl is not our answer at the 5, if he is we are screwed next year.
Wow! Uhl is not a disaster! I love watching him. The kid can jump, his ball dribbling is off the chart for a tall man, and he plays very hard. His shot is funky but goes in. He played BB for few years only and he will be very very good next 2 years for us. You know nothing about basketball.
He will have to. We need his size.Kreiner will contribute in the post next year. Pemsl and Jones are question marks because of their injuries.Defense and defending the 3 pt shot will determine how many games they win next year. The offense should be ok as there are many guys who are scorers and will. CW's development in running the offense may be the key to victories.
Wait a second, are you saying the outgoing group of seniors can create their own shot? Have you not been watching the last four years? The returning big man? The only thing Woodbury can do is rebound. That is it! Uthoff is going to be missed, but his lack of rebounding for a 6-9 forward is really bad. When we were playing well earlier this year, our Seniors were playing abnormally well, compared to their entire careers. Clemmons was playing lock down defense, Mike was assisting everything and limiting TO's, Woody was catching every bounce pass and turning them into layups, and Uthoff was hitting everything in site. Right now, they have gone back to their norm. Woody's hands have been soft again, Gessell with stupid turnovers, Clemmons can't hit a FT or shot, and Uthoff has gone back to being timid uthoff. Our team next year will not have the experience, but they will be a better rebounding and shooting team then the one we have now. Gesell and Clemmons are so short, 60% of our perimeter is open to shoot from.God I love this boards enthusiasm, but in what sense is our line up next year going to be better than this year?

You know what teams have been doing lately? They wait to see how our zone defense is set up, then go opposite Uthoff on the perimeter. How many 3 point shot blocks does Uthoff have recently? They can shoot over MG and AC all day because they are short and never block shots.
