Cory Clark and Thomas Gilman: From foes to friends - Andy Hamilton

I'm interested to know who the kids were that got 2nd in the two podium photos. One has a North Scott sweatshirt and the other has Hawkeye Kids Wrestling Club. Can anyone identify them?

I think the most impressive thing in that article is that Clark is ranked #8 in the world.............for the game Halo.

Seriously. I need to ask one of my gamer friends if that is even remotely true. There are millions and millions of geeks with more time on their hangs playing Halo around the clock. Maybe Clark is a natural! Haha.

I found the following link a couple weeks ago after iawrestle tweeted about past champs. A lot of recognizable names on these lists.

Looks like Trevor Berry took second in the A50 weight class and Bret McKinney took second in the C90 weight class.

Great article. It's interesting to get an inside glimpse into their personal relationship. A good piece of reporting that I would love to see more of. Very impressed by Gilman's team first attitude. Not an easy thing to deal with when an elite athlete, who would be in the lineup at 98% of D1 schools, is relegated to a back up as the clock is ticking on eligibility. Not only takes a strong individual, but strong family support to stay the course and not jump ship. Very impressed. Just another reason to be proud that this is the kid batting lead off for the Hawks.

I might just write him in when I vote in the primary today. Gilman / Clark 2016?

it was amazing that these two opponents were so intense at such a young age and they really went after each other for so many years. They went their separate ways and found state gold success but the college match ups had to be incredible to watch in the room. Its hard to imagine how mature Gillman became when he decided to push Clark to be the best since Clark was the man up for the team....that's a great story in itself and how these 2 guys bought into the team concept and into the fact that in the long run it would pay off for both of them if they just pushed each other harder and harder every day. I loved the Brooks comment where he called them ornery little SOBS...classic team banter

Cool article.

The Halo thing about Clark is really shocking. People play that for 12 hours a day, so it is hard to think someone that commits so much time to wrestling (not to mention school/family) could be so good. But I'll have to trust the reporting of AH that he verified this before printing it.

You make a good point. And it hasn't always been easy to balance the two passions. Cory has obviously been doing a great job of it lately, though!

Great article! Reminds me of a story from Greco camp. One of my high school wrestlers (who was a 4 time state place winner himself) said to me, Cory Clark is AMAZING, I responded "No Sh&T" he is a bad man. The kid says "NO, at Halo - He is ranked 8th in the world" I remember thinking that's awesome but it's probably a big exaggeration, well according to this story it was all true!

That Halo and Clark thing is just mind blowing.
I can't get over it considering that Pro Gaming is a thing, and kids get paid a lot of money to be that good at a video game.
For a game as popular as Halo, there are sponsored teams of kids who are paid year round to literally play video games 12 hours a day. They get all the free Mountain Dew and Doritos they want. There's also a world tournament were these teams compete for millions of dollars of prize money.
If Clark ever wanted to compete in freestyle post college, he should look into sponsorships from Xbox, Redbull, and Tostinos Pizza Rolls. He could have a niche brand sponsorship like Metcalf does with his blue color/ outdoor sponsors.

He plays Clash of Clans aswell. You would be surprised at the number of top D-1 wrestlers that are in the same clans. Only rivals on the mat!

We just need a Hawkeye who plays Pokemon now, as that is Spencer Lee's video game of choice when not wrestling!

3rd grade on! They must really owe each other a lot.
It make me wonder how often Taylor and Steiber ran into each other in Ohio.
And Nolf and Retherford lived close in PA.
Handel and Bach credited each other too.

I know they did at the finals of Ironman at 103. But then Taylor started moving up. IAW the announcer, they never wrestled each other before this.

Yeah, I think DT moved to Ohio during high school. He's from Colorado I believe.
