Wisconsin will play the same amount of games against MSU, Michigan and Ohio State in the next 4 weeks as Iowa will play in 4 YEARS. Some will say that's a great thing and some will say they want Iowa to play higher profile games more regularly.

These schedules were set at the time that Maryland and Rutgers joined a few years ago. Does anyone know how that is done? I'm thinking Gary Barta may be more on the ball than a lot on here give him credit for.

That would be Jim Delany throwing Iowa a bone.....or several. And we are grateful.

Right, everyone.............

Yeah, conference expansion/realignment and the elimination of one non-conference game has made Iowa's schedule unbearable from my perspective. Michigan, Michigan St and Ohio St each only once over a 4 year period? Awful! But, hey, at least we get to play Iowa St, Illinois, Minnesota, Northwestern and Purdue year in and year out. Iowa is cornering the market on 11 AM BTN and ESPN2 games.

Well if we struggle to beat those teams why should we want our schedule to get tougher? Right?

I know the fans want "bigger" games and people complain about the sos, but again, we're talking about a set conference schedule.

Would fans rather be 10-2 with a loss to one of the "big 3" (the only one we faced), or 7-5 with losses to all 3 year in and year out?

And don't lie and say that you could live with 7-5 every year. Gtfo right now if that's what you're gonna say because I've seen people say that before in regards to other arguments and that turned out to be a stenching pile of crap. They were some of the people at the forefront demanding KF and everyone else be gone after the 2014 season.

Fans want wins....and a chance for a shot at the title. That's what we got last year in spite of our "easy schedule" and we damn near got it.

But this is all speculation anyway, because we're arguing about a set schedule, after all. Some years it will be harder and some years it will be easier. It's all up to Iowa to do something with the schedule given them. It always has been.

It is not even every 4 years, with 7 opposite teams in the other division and only playing 3 from the other division Iowa will only play (possibly) one team 2 times in 6 years

There's no legitimate reason for a West school to have to play 3 of the big boys in the East, and no reason for a West school to not play any of the big boys.

Here are seven rotations. Assign one to each of the schools in the West, and then rotate through every two years.

Michigan, Indiana, Michigan State
Maryland, Ohio State, Rutgers
Penn State, Michigan, Indiana
Michigan State, Maryland, Ohio State
Rutgers, Penn State, Michigan

Ohio State, Rutgers, Penn State

This is correct.

The fans that want Iowa to play a Murderers Row schedule every year will be the first and loudest to scream about the Hawks' .500 (or less) record.

While I don't completely disagree with you, in my assessment of Iowa football - when they're good, they win, when they're not, they don't, and the strength of schedule doesn't mean a whole lot. Having the big boys on the schedule so infrequently really takes away from the privilege of being in the Big 10, and I think we can agree that to be the best you have to beat the best. The way things are going now with the schedule (B1G and non-conf), it's not hard to picture the program going stale and the fans becoming more and more ambivalent.

iowa pkayed a tough schedule when Fry was hired. first thing he did was change that. Snyder did the same at Kansas State.

Iowa has beaten Michigan 4 out the last 5 times played. Michigan should be bitching about their soft schedule for not playing Iowa.

Ummm... not really. I know you don't like Hayden, but that's not true at all. Before Hayden took the job we played:
1970:Oregon St, #9USC, Arizona
1971:Oregon St., #14 Penn St.
1972: Oregon St, #13 Penn St.
1973: #6 Penn St., #18 UCLA, and Arizona.
1974: #12 UCLA, #20 Penn St, #9 USC
1975: Syracuse, #15 Penn St, #3 USC
1976: Syracuse, Penn St, #12 USC
1977: ISU, Arizona, UCLA
1978: ISU, Arizona, Utah
Hayden is hired in 1979:
1979: #3 Oklahoma, #7 Nebraska
1980: #6 Nebraska, #20 Arizona
1981: #7 Nebraska, ISU, #6 UCLA
1982: #3 Nebraska, ISU, Arizona
1983: #16 Penn St., ISU
1984: ISU, #12 Penn St.
1985: Drake, NIU, ISU
1986: ISU, NIU, UTEP (85&86 are the worst schedule under Hayden)
1987: #16 Tennesee, ISU, Arizona
1988: Hawaii, K-State, ISU
1989: Oregon, ISU, Tulsa
1990: Cinci, ISU, #10 Miami Fl
1991: Hawaii, NIU, ISU
1992: NC. State, #1 Miami, ISU
1993: Tulsa, ISU, #18 Penn St
1994: Cent. Michigan, ISU, Penn St, Oregon.

So ......Iowa still played plenty of ranked/quality teams under Hayden. If anything, someone could make the argument that Iowa's schedule was made weaker to under Hayden because the Iowa-ISU series was resurrected. ISU replaced highly ranked teams like Penn St, Nebraska, Oklahoma, or USC on Iowa's schedule.

Were schedules made as far in advance back then? The list sure looks like Iowa had tough games already scheduled before Fry until 84, then his scheduling took over from 85 on
