So let me get this right; Fran applied for a 6th year for Jones, but didn't give him a scholly for that year?

You make this sound like he's being mistreated. He's not.

Fran recruited him to be here for two years. He will graduate in May, and he can go to a lower level team to play his final year. It's not like he had a chance at playing time at Iowa next year.

Well why did iowa apply for the 6th year for him?

I am just confused about this whole thing. When they got it, there was really no indication that he wasn't coming back.
Actually its been a topic on here all year. Its a numbers game. We simply don't have a scholorship open for Jones. Once Fran took both Garza and Nunge, everyone knew what that meant. As it is Connor will have to walk on next year. Would you rather Fran turned Nunge or Garza away, and kept a ride open for Jones, knowing his injury history, and the fact that we've already given him the two years he was promised?

On July 21, 2016 Jones was granted a 6th year. Here is what HawkCentral wrote:

Iowa forward Dale Jones has been granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA, meaning he can play two more seasons for the Hawkeyes, men’s basketball coach Fran McCaffery announced in a news release Thursday.

It appears the writer assumed both remaining years of eligibility would be with Iowa. Hell, I assumed that as well. I assumed he would be a key contributor.

But, as you stated, unless someone leaves/transfers early (unlikely), there is no room for Jones. All 13 scholarships are taken.

As a result:
* Connor has to walk on; Fran will pay his way.
* Jones will have to use his 6th and final year elsewhere.

OK. Thanks for the clarification. Until this weekend I really had no idea he wasn't coming back.

To allow him to rehabilitate his knee and set him up to do a graduate transfer for immediate playing time on his 6th year...or if we get some surprise transfers this spring, maybe the playing time next year is at Iowa.

Not likely to happen, but what if Jones suddenly gets 3pt hot on B1G tourney or NCAA.

i think the only way Jones is at Iowa for 2016-2017 is if 2 players transfer because if 1 transfers, Connor gets that 13th and final scholarship.

I watched the quick interview. He didn't rule out IOWA even with the scholarship situation the way it is.

Had he not broken his wrist who knows. He hasn't been able to contribute much at all during his tenure at Iowa due to his injuries and with him graduating Fran likely asked him to move on.

He didn't appear to be particularly thrilled during the pre-game Senior Day recognition.

Fran mentioned that Jones didn't want to participate in Senior Day because Jones didn't want to take the spotlight away from Jok whom Jones believed deserved a day just for himself. Not sure that his disinterest is connected to him moving on or if he really just thought Jok deserved his own day.

i heard that too. It was almost like Fran wanted to make sure Dale got recognized since his time was up.

And suddenly plays defense?
Exactly, Unfortunately his knee is not healthy enough for him to play any significant minutes. It was up in the air that he was even going to play on senior day, but Fran made the gesture to thank him for his time as a Hawk. The fact that he took the floor on senior night I would think was a clear sign as well. Guys don't come back and play after being honored as seniors.

He said this summer or early fall he wasn't sure with the whole scholarship situation if he was going to be playing his senior year at Iowa. Or might hang em up. This isn't anything new, plus he was aware most likely he was gone after the season. I remember reading the article, Fran applied for a 6th year so if Jones wanted to, he could play just probably not at Iowa.

He also mentions a possible opportunity in Europe. He graduates in May, so a payday makes more sense than going somewhere for another year. With that being said, he would be a great get for a Valley team or even a Creighton if they need to plug a hole due to a transfer. I would like to see a healthy Jones for a full season, but it sounds like that ship has sailed. As others stated, maybe a transfer changes his mind if there is a scholarship available.

At this point, I'm not sure how many options he would have as he's not healthy. If someone has an extra scholarship in the spring, they could take a chance and give it to Jones for a year. It is too bad all around, as he had some ability (a 6-8 guy who could shoot).

we will never know if 3 pt shooting gets hot, he probably wont play

This is the way of life in the NCAA, since it started granting 6th years (thank you Jess Settles).. Doesn't seem unfair to me at all. Same thing with Spike Albrecht last year. Michigan had already signed 2 recruits so there were no schollies left.

It might actually be unfair if Fran restricted his transfer to a school he wanted to go to (hypothetically like ISU or UNI) because we play them. That would likely get a coach some media backlash.

Fran is trying to be as fair to him as possible, and giving him a chance to play another year somewhere else is part of that. By all accounts Dale has been well-liked by the coaches and a great teammate in the locker room, but he has been unlucky with injuries and his time has come.

that could not have been an easy discussion

I'm not sure how hard it would be. Fran (and staff) spent the time to get Dale the additional year. Fran already gave up his son's scholarship so it's not like Fran's kid is getting Dale's scholarship. Fran is paying out of pocket and Dale can choose to do the same thing. The problem for Dale is that there just won't be any playing time available to him (at Iowa) unless his shooting is on fire. My guess is he just wants to play and so will want to find somewhere that needs him and then possibly has a scholarship available. UNI might be a good place.

Dale Jones has literally never smiled.

People have different personalities. Pete smiles. Dale doesn't. Speaking personally, I played all three major sports in high school and ran track, and then I played some D-1 football and four years of D-1 baseball, and I guarantee you I NEVER smiled once while on the court or the field. That was my competitive persona.

Off the field I was still quiet, but I smiled and joked around almost like a normal person.;)

So I wouldn't read much of anything into all of it. And if I were Dale, I'd be especially somber knowing how much I had lost due to the uncontrollable factor of injuries. I wish the young man well wherever he goes and whatever he does.

He will always have a degree from Iowa and be Hawkeye. I wish him well. If he'd been able to play last year and not have been injured this year he could have been the starter along side Jordan.

I'm sure Fran hoped at that time he'd have Jones for two more years, and he would be an x factor for the Hawks. Unfortunately it was another year of injuries and trying to get healthy enough to get on the court. Time to cut bait........

Fran isn't being a prick here as he had Jones' scholarship allocated to a two year window. He's not kicking him out.....he just doesn't have the option of extending it to a 3rd year. There's nothing saying that Fran wouldn't allow Jones to continue being on the team as a walk on.

If Jones does indeed graduate and gets that 6th year, then that is a complete bonus for the guy. It gives him an opportunity to have a full year of Grad School paid for if another team has an open scholarship to offer.

Let's also remember, that historically speaking....the 6th year of eligibility due to a medical redshirt is relatively new. It's a gift.

I see no reason of anyone being treated unfair here.

I totally agree. Fran and Iowa have met their commitment to Dale, and for his part he's been a good teammate. Best wishes to him and his future.
