Here is a dumb question. If he graduated, why does he need a scholarship? Can't he become a walk-on should he want to stay here? Now, I am not sure why he would want to do that, but wouldn't that be an option?
I guess he could walk on, but why? He'd have to pay his own way through grad school, and given next years roster, minutes will be very hard to come by. Time to cut the cord. Here is a dumb question. I don't why he would want to continue to play. The guy is snake bitten.
He has his degree, go get a job and save your knees.
Let's also remember, that historically speaking....the 6th year of eligibility due to a medical redshirt is relatively new. It's a gift.
I see no reason of anyone being treated unfair here.
I was just thinking the same thing! A Hawk from the time he was a pup, till he left Iowa as an old man! Put up some amazing numbers, considering his bad back......Jess Settles says hello from 20 years ago.
People have different personalities. Pete smiles. Dale doesn't. Speaking personally, I played all three major sports in high school and ran track, and then I played some D-1 football and four years of D-1 baseball, and I guarantee you I NEVER smiled once while on the court or the field. That was my competitive persona.
Off the field I was still quiet, but I smiled and joked around almost like a normal person.
So I wouldn't read much of anything into all of it. And if I were Dale, I'd be especially somber knowing how much I had lost due to the uncontrollable factor of injuries. I wish the young man well wherever he goes and whatever he does.

i think the only way Jones is at Iowa for 2016-2017 is if 2 players transfer because if 1 transfers, Connor gets that 13th and final scholarship.
Jones won't even see the court unless the game is a blowout. So your "what if" is just plain nonsense. To allow him to rehabilitate his knee and set him up to do a graduate transfer for immediate playing time on his 6th year...or if we get some surprise transfers this spring, maybe the playing time next year is at Iowa.
Not likely to happen, but what if Jones suddenly gets 3pt hot on B1G tourney or NCAA.
I don't know the scholarship situation at UNI, but I would be happy for him if he was able to play there. It would basically be a homecoming for him. This is the way of life in the NCAA, since it started granting 6th years (thank you Jess Settles).. Doesn't seem unfair to me at all. Same thing with Spike Albrecht last year. Michigan had already signed 2 recruits so there were no schollies left.
It might actually be unfair if Fran restricted his transfer to a school he wanted to go to (hypothetically like ISU or UNI) because we play them. That would likely get a coach some media backlash.
Any chance Connor gets a baseball scholarship instead?
