Dametri Evans?

I noticed he wasn't on the roster as well. Hope it doesn't mean he left the team. He's one of the top catchers we've had in awhile and we need depth at the position.

It wasn't widely talked about, but the roster was 5-6 players over the NCAA required limit. Coach Heller had a tough time, but he had to cut several players/encourage them to transfer. He did help most find a landing spot. I can't go into specifics about Evans, but it sounds like it was best for both parties involved.

I've been told the catching depth chart will be Frankos (if/when healthy), Moriel and Fricke. Guzzo will likely be used as a utility player, but since he worked behind the plate last season, he is also taking reps there again just to stay sharp.

So what are we looking at for a lineup on the 19th?

Good question. Unlike last season's team there are a lot of holes to fill this year. Best guess would be as follows--

1B-Peyton/Klenovich
2B-McCoy
SS-Roscetti
3B-Woods/Guzzo
RF-Joblinske
CF-Booker
LF-Barrett/Farley
C-Frankos/Moriel
Rotation-#1 Peyton, #2 Erickson, #3 Matthews, #4/Midweek Gallagher/Allgeyer, Closer-Radtke

Just an educated guess. I wouldn't be surprised to see the coaches experiment with several different lineups through the first couple weeks of the season.

You think they will throw Radtke back into the closers role? He really struggled last year. I figured they would give Vandermaten a shot.

It was kept under wraps, Radtke was pitching hurt most of last season. With Hibbing claiming the closer's role the coaches were playing with house money. Another power arm they could use as a bridge to Hibbing. Vandermaten could be a non-traditional closer if needed, but to start the season they would like to get multiple days out of him in a 3 game series. He will likely be a setup man to start.

Lots of good info here. It would be great to have a more lively message board this year. heller has definitely put Iowa baseball back on the map and people are talking a lot about it.

Anyone have an update on any Stadium upgrades and where they're at in the process?

This is off topic, but I would love to see Iowa try to play one of their midweek games and or weekend series in Principal Park. Would be great exposure for the program.

Iowa played the I-Cubs every other year during the Dahm regime but I agree, it would be fun to have mid-week game or two in DSM.

The most logical choice for a midweek game in Des Moines would be Creighton IMO. However, after the debacle a couple years ago where it rained all day in Omaha and Iowa traveled there for a midweek game that Creighton said all day was "scheduled as planned". Then it was cancelled approximately 45 minutes from first pitch may have put an end to the two playing for a while.
