Damn, Fran praising/explaining why Connor has to be on the floor at the end of games

With the way Pat has been playing, the answer could be yes to your question. Pat is in a slump as well. It’s like he intentionally try’s to shoot the most difficult shot he can. Last night during one play, he turned left away from the basket creating a really difficult shot attempt. He could have turned to his right and been 3 ft from the hoop. Those floaters have to stop.
Try’s?! Wtf.

Match-ups can dictate who is in at the end of games. Maryland had two guards 6’5” or taller playing at the end of the game. Swapping out Connor for Joe would have meant Iowa would have had three players on the floor at the end of the game at 6’3” or under. That is a lot of size to give up on defense.

Disclaimer...first game I've watched all year.
Couple questions/observations.
1. Why does CMac/Bohanan play at all?
2. Has PMac regressed from last year?
3. We looked really slow and plodding on offense. Is that the norm?
4. Did Touissant really sit out the last 8 minutes or so?
5. It looks like if someone wants to, they can really abuse the D on the inside.
6. I got Fubo free trial for the bowl game. Is it worth extending for the rest of the season?

I heard the maintenance staff at Carver have petitioned Fran and are threatening to strike if something isn't done. Apparently, they are tired of having to paint the rims after every home game after Connor gets a few threes up. The low trajectory and clanking it off the side of the rim causes deep chipping and requires several coats of paint.

Apparently they installed a special hoop for practice sessions.

Honestly...I have no problem with him out there at the end of games if he's shooting over 80% from the line. Unfortunately, he hasn't been good from the line this year.

Nostalgia for the glorious last few years of Iowa! hoops?
2. Has PMac regressed from last year?
You're assuming he ever "gressed."
3. We looked really slow and plodding on offense. Is that the norm?
Iowa is currently #2 in D1 ppg.
4. Did Touissant really sit out the last 8 minutes or so?
Yeah, but Fran explained all of that. He has a telepathic relationship with his son, Connor, and sends all of his defensive instructions through the ether to be relayed by Connor to the other four on the floor.
5. It looks like if someone wants to, they can really abuse the D on the inside.
What's "D?" I'm asking for Fran and the Floor General/Traffic Cop.
6. I got Fubo free trial for the bowl game. Is it worth extending for the rest of the season?
Can't help ya there. I watch via Fupa on my Sony Vega flatscreen (ca. 2003).

I was being sarcastic. I was echoing the sentiment of Fran at the press conference, shortly after the game. Fran preempted the question about why Connor was out there. What I said in my earlier post is the reason Fran said he was out there.
Oh, My bad, we are in agreement about an unfortunate situation.

fran playing Conner the last 13m is another topic to be unpacked..

Connor is part of the team and I'm personally glad he is. he provides a toughness that this team would lack without him. I will always want a guy that gives 110% and is a team player. There's definitely a time and place for having him in the game. I don't worry so much about the minutes as it's more about the situation. Sometimes we need a guy to control the game, sometimes we need someone who can attack and shoot. So it's more about the right guy(s) for the right situation.

The one concern I have is that Fran isn't playing one of the two true centers because it would take away minutes from Connor. I want to believe that Fran isn't playing the centers because they're not good enough, but I'm concerned that Fran doesn't want to introduce another guy into the rotation. My gut feeling tells me we need to have some minutes for the big guys because we're going to need them against some of the bigger teams.

The zone wasn't good but it was better than man unfortunately.

Iowa was apparently incapable of defending that double high screen for Russell in man.

As much as I hate zone it accomplished what it needed to last night.

It took away Marylands main weapon and made the rest of the team try to beat hawks with 3pt shooting and they couldn't do it.

The zones effectiveness dropped off a cliff when Fran subbed Jbo for Perkins though.
Trust me, Iowa will not be the only team on the schedule that will have trouble keeping Russell in front of them. You say that like it is exclusive to Iowa. Think again.
Dropped off a cliff? Prone to exaggeration?

If you watched the game he’s 100% right. There was not 1 person JBO could guard in that game. Which is why we had to switch to zone, and JBO was terrible in that as well.

Add to that Jordan goes an awesome 1 for 5 from deep. Terrible D and can't throw it in the ocean but he gets 27 mins?

No I said it how it is. I don't care what other teams do.

Yes dropped off a cliff. Iowa went from stopping dribble penetration to giving it up consistently when Fran subbed Perkins for Jbo.

Is it nepotism when he replaced his brother? Connor took minutes from Pat
Since neither should have been on the floor last nite, taking minutes from one and giving it to another is a joke. We are getting no scoring, no rebounds and no defense from either of the Mc boys. We rebound, we win. Perkins rebounds better than either of the Mc boys. Onto another rant, JBO has set us back by not moving on. The minutes he gets should be going to the other guards to gain experience and it's criminal that he's playing anything other than end of game situations.

Absolutely correct. Jbo is taking minutes that both Kris Murray and Perkins should have been getting. And yes, Fran should have told Jbo it was time to move on. Perkins is getting 12-14 minutes and Murray even less. If Jbo doesn't come back both of their minutes get doubled. We would be a much better defensive team if that happens. Much better.

Connor is 9th on the team in minutes per game.

yes, CMAC the 9th best player is right up there with the other members of 2nd unit at 16.1 minute vs 16.8 min for Kris, 17.2 for Ahron Ulis, Tony Perkins 18.1.. I don't think there is a need for an entire 2nd unit which means there is no reason the 9th best player needs to get 16.1 minutes . I'm willing to see how the season goes. If this team doesn't make the ncaa tourney and is sub 0.500 in B1G and we have Keegan basially carrying the team, then Fran's subbing pattern/coaching on the rest of the roster would be open for criticism as a public figure.

This is pretty much word for word my thoughts last year when we found out he was coming back.

This teams potential took a hit with him coming back. Same with Connor.

If Fran didn't have those two at his disposal this would be a team with the potential to do something in March.

As it is, the growth that Kris and TP needed is not happening.

In crunch time, Fran goes with the people he trusts to minimize mistakes over the more dynamic players who can make plays. Always has.

Unfortunately, Connor is starting to remind me of Cordell Pemsl out there - his body moves like a 40 year old man after all of these injuries.
At this point in life, I wish I could move like I could when I was forty...

Which it is why it shocked me in the second half when Maryland took - and missed - 4 3"s on successive trips leading to Iowa building it's lead. There were giving Iowa problems inside before that.

I’ll play devils advocate. Who else on this team isn’t a team player and doesn’t give 110%? When the best someone can say adds is toughness basically saying they don’t excel in anything else. Or when they do You think of a lock down defender or guy who hits the boards hard which he is neither. I’ve said it before in other threads it’s obvious he isn’t the same player as he was 2 years ago. Maybe injuries caught up to him article earlier in the season having some lingering issues. He adds absolutely nothing on offense. Won’t shoot and when he does is a miss, defenders sag off and doesn’t create for others because doesn’t drive or post up. His minutes should be limited even more.

Connor is 9th on the team in minutes per game.
It's weighted heavily by the 2 games where minor injury limited minutes. ISU, 8, Western Illinois 10.

The PT has become a lightning rod here, which is too bad as it is no fault of his own. He knows how to play. The issue is he's not the same player he was when he started out, before the hip surgeries and various injuries.

Fran is basically looking for ways to justify having him in the games at this point. I am concerned that a player like Sandfordt, and to some extent, Kr. Murray or Perkins, aren't developing as they should and could actually win Iowa a game as the season goes along. Sandfordt can actually score and bring some things to the table. He was great against WIU, Iowa up 6 and sluggish in the first half, he comes in and plays great. His reward is to get 2 minutes against Maryland. And I have no idea how Kr. Murray can play 2 minutes in a whole half. He is by almost every piece of data Iowa's 2nd best player (PER, Win Shares per 40 minutes, Box +/-). I don't comprehend how that player gets 2 minutes in a half. That is not giving your team the best chance to win.

Sounds like Rock and Roll Face had a miserable time watching the hawks last night.

I'm not trying to say Connor deserves any minutes, I'm just saying the guy is a team player and put forth a lot of effort. Connor isn't determining his playing time so there's no reason for posters to post negative things about Connor. The complaint should be with Fran, not Connor.

Apparently I need to be more specific.

In the first half, when we were in man, Russell was going around Joe T, Perkins, JBo, a folding chair, etc. Yet you seem to focus on JBo'S inability to play defense.

Now I am not here to defend JBo. But thinking that he was the only guy on the roster who couldn't defend Russell in man is inexcusable.

Maybe he's not helping a lot now. But before the season, if we didn't have him our only 3pt (proven) shooter was Keegan and I think he is only at 35% or so. No one else is over that except Sandfort and he was unkown at the beginning.

Not at all what I said. Please pay closer attention if we're going to have a discussion.

I said he wasn't playing good defense in the zone the last 8 minutes or whatever it was to finish the game when he came back in for Perkins.

Joe and Tony were both playing well in the zone both stopping penetration and closing out to shooters. Jbo came in and was not good at either.

In the first half Maryland was setting a high screen, sometimes two for Fats against Iowas man.

When there's a high screen like that its the responsibility of the screeners man to turn the ballhandler back to his defender by getting on the high side of the screen or switch it.

If that doesn't happen there's not much the initial defender can do.

I was disappointed in Iowas screen defense.

Rebraca in particular struggles with this.

Fran went zone to take that high screen out of the equation for Maryland.
