Daviyon Nixon

Any word on his status? It has been awfully quiet since the Bama offer.

As much as any kid would like the offer and an official trip to see Alabama football live, especially during the late Fall, Alabama is not a place with many openings for DTs. Bama plays the 3-4 defense which means their DTs are huge space/ lineman eaters who engage multiple blockers and let the quicker inside backers make the between the ends tackles.

Bama has their eyes on several 4/5 stars prototypical 3-4 DTs of the 6'3"+ 290+ dimensions and couple of them are JUCOs so coming in PT may be a really battle to find a spot at Bama.

Iowa, however, plays 2 DTs and often has to develop a DT for a couple of seasons so they are not as stacked up with manpower.

My verdict.....Daviyon knows Iowa wants him and he could see PT next year. Maybe not a starter but AJ like minutes (rotation). Plus his family loved Iowa.

Hope you are right.

Nixon's LOI with Iowa is still valid. His options are to stay where he is for another year or go to Iowa this spring unless Iowa releases him. Alabama's contact with him was technically a recruiting violation so it's unlikely the Iowa or the NCAA would allow him to go there if Iowa were to release him.

Once a player goes the JUCO route its like throwing a fish back in a lake, fair game for anyone to go after.

That is true of they stay for 2 years Dutch but my understanding is the one year still obligates him to us.

Correct. My guess is that Alabama wasn't entirely aware of his situation, or that they thought Iowa would just release him. He could step into the rotation next year (Bazata is graduating).

Crazy how quickly things can change in a year He went from not having and P5 offers to Iowa offering right before signing day to one semester later Alabama offering. He's got the athleticism to be a really good player.

There is a technicality in the Iowa situation because Nixon ended up qualifying, so from what I have read this generalization doesn't apply

He has two options
1) Enrolls at Iowa this Winter and begin Spring practice- he will have 4 years to play 3 years
2) He stays at IWCC has to graduate and then he can go whereever he wants- has 3 years to play 2. In that case teams are far less likely to offer (especially of Bama caliber) because they have less time in the program.
Long story short- It is more than likely that he ends up at Iowa and also further indication that Iowa is pretty darn good at identifying talent that others overlooked

thanks for the info; did not know the details

crazy that Bama offered him when he was already signed to Iowa

Getting Nixon at semester is huge. That kid has some serious athleticism for his size. Once he learns the defense and gets technique down I can see him being a force.
Saw some of his highlights from Iowa Western this fall, kid was tossing OL like rag dolls. Obviously lots of Jaleel in his game, we need another run stuffer and pass rusher with Bazata graduating. His nickname is "BigTruck" and was 2nd team JUCO all conf. Last stats I saw were 39 tackles, 11 TFLs and 4 sacks, come on down BigTruck!

I think I'd like a defensive line that includes AJ, Nixon, Lattimore, and Nelson... seems like a lot of talent that could get after a QB and has the size to clog running lanes.

If Jackson were to stay somehow, it really limits what other teams would have for offensive options.

Bama most certainly plays a 4-3. They do switch between both schemes at times and take out interior D-lineman replaced with edge rushers on 2nd and 3rd and longs, but are a base 4-3 defense.

Wasn’t overlooked, academics were always the issue.

"Obligates him to us"

There's something about how you phrased this that doesn't sit right. The whole LOI thing is such a mess.

I'm know you didn't mean anything by it but..... ugh. I hope this guy is happy with how things work out.

He definitely will. I think he'll be really good as a Junior and Senior. I'm curious whether they redshirt him in 2018.
Unless he gets injured I doubt he'll redshirt in 2018. Plus we can definitely use another big body in the middle to help stop the run.

Reminds me of Mike Daniels

I don't think I've ever seen a DT make so many 'shirt' tackles as I've seen in this video, lol. He has a good motor, but he will have to play double teams better and maintain gap integrity better at Iowa if he is going to see the field right away. There is a HUGE difference between JUCO Olinemen and B1G Olinemen. He won't be 'throwing guys around like ragdolls' like someone said (although I didn't really see him through anyone around like ragdolls). No doubt, we can use him as he has the 'tools'..

I wouldn't be shocked if he red-shirted. If he would have got his clearance on time and enrolled at Iowa, I bet he would have red-shirted this year. Unless he works his way into the rotation (which will be tough to do), I would RS him, let him get his studying in order and spend a year under Doyle. He should then be a monster to deal with for 3 yrs.! I wouldn't mind if he surprises us.
