Daviyon Nixon

Noticed a high motor, good athleticism for his size, actually pursues well in space, and seemed to get good separation from the OL.

I would agree that redshirting would really help him in the technique, knowledge, and strength departments. Obviously there is plenty of tutelage available for him at Iowa. He probably doesn't like the idea of redshirting tho.

Him coming in January makes it more likely that he plays than redshirts next year. Not to say that redshirting isn't possible but he has more time to be coached up on technique and the defense.
It would all essentially be "on him" whether he plays early or not. He'd need to make sure that he transitions academically first ... and then he'd need to get down the D as well. He definitely has the raw ingredients that could lead to an early contributor. Bazata's graduation opens up a spot for the '18 season .... but the DL gets thinned out even more for those who are looking for starting spots in 19.

I hope M. Nelson takes him under his wing as he did with AJ. Nixon looks to be more mobile than Ced. I just can't imagine him not getting meaningful snaps like Reif did this year.

I believe him coming in January is based off him actually qualifying out of high school vs. not qualifying. It would make no sense to stay at CC any longer with his binding LOI from Iowa and not needing to graduate. I don’t think him coming now determines redshirt or not.

I know why he is coming in January. My point was the earlier on campus you are, the more likely you have a shot to play early. He will be here for offseason workouts, spring practice and all summer.

He's gonna be a good one, but he'll need more explosion out of his stance to excel in the B1G.
My highly unqualified eye for talent noticed this as well. But even if we are right, I'm not worried because something tells me Doyle will be having this kid do a crazy amount hang cleans and front squats when he gets here this spring. Kid is going to be a monster for us.

You don't recruit JUCO's to redshirt. He looks good enough to play right now. Shannon will likely redshirt.

they didn't recruit him as a JUCO, they recruited him out of HS so it's a little different scenario. I think the key on whether he RS's or not is still mainly his academics. Remember he had problems qualifying. If his grades and transcripts from Iowa Western look like crap, it would probably be in his best interest to RS. He can probably help us next year inside, but barring injuries, we don't 'need' him. The nice thing is, since he is coming in Jan. he'll have a semester and a summer to get ahead in classes and get adjusted before fall camp unlike most of the incoming freshmen.

If he's gonna sit out next year, he could just go to bama and sit for a year.
Then he wouldn't have to worry about silly things like classes.....plus he'd get a new car ;)

Definitely needs some work on hand placement and strike. Too often he takes on the whole man rather than half a man, which works at that level but probably not in the B1G. The good news is those skills are teachable. The skills and natural talent he does have is not teachable. He's going to be a good one.
