Dayton's Obi Toppin named AP Player of the Year

Obi will be coming out and hopefully Luka will be coming back. Flash over substance. It doesn’t change what a awesome season Luka had.

If the tournament had happened it would have shown Obi that when you play good competition every game it’s a different game. More big city media driving poor decisions.

Look the NBA draft will answer the question of who experts thought was the best player. If Garza stays that will tell us that he wasn’t ready or highly thought of. Toppin is simply the better player. Be happy for kid, Garza can stay and perhaps win next year.

Lol, at about 3 stupid statements in just this 1 post!

That’s impressive actually.

Total joke. Press much not watch many games or even look at stats. Jay Bilas sucks

All spot on... your just bitter. Great kid and player. Obi won the AP, Luke may win some other.s. The flip of the coin will be who is drafted higher. Loses to really bad teams like DePaul and Nebraska and a neutral tells me perhaps the BIG TEN overrated. Hell Richmond who finished 4 in A 10 beat Wisconsin by 10. So CBB this year was very even and competitive year .

Player of the year is driven by how the kids actually played, not promise. Obi had a great season, Garza had a better one. Kaminsky, Valentine, Burke and Turner all had worse stats than Garza in the last ten years, when they won player of the year, all coming out of the big ten. Make no mistake, had Garza had MSU on his jersey, nobody is even debating it.

In all seriousness, learn to type. You sound like a Grade A moron. Iowa had as many bad losses as you guys had top 25 wins.

That’s possible the dumbest take I’ve ever read. The award goes to the beat college player. Has nothing to do with a higher draft ceiling. It should come down to numbers. And Garza’s are all better, against better competition.

This award has nothing to do with who is the "better player" and who is more NBA ready. It was for the Player of the Year - meaning who had the best season. All things being close to equal, the level of competition should have made the difference for Garza.

Can't wait for a couple of years to see which one wins NBA ROTY when they're going up against equal competition.

Also, is there a breakdown by voter anywhere?

So you guys think the National writers would vote for a guy from Dayton vs a Big Ten player who has much more TV exposure. Look both great players. Luke will win the Wooden or some other award. It’s very close.

I am a huge CBB fan and also know coach from his days back East. He is a favorite of mine. I have always liked the Iowa program and how they compete. I enjoy using rivals to see what other boards are saying etc. I am a UD grad and felt like I needed to protect my guy. Our teams run very different offenses and the two boys play different styles. Luke was the go too,Obi was very efficient, far less shots. Both deserving. But Obi is much more than a dunker or highlight reel.

I don't have a problem with Toppin winning but that is a very ignorant post.

It’s really spot on. A symptom of ignorance is not being open minded and or attacking people and incapable of conversation. Sounds like a fit for you.

You really had to try hard to post something this wrong. What the NBA things of the two players potencial in the league has absolutely NOTHING to do with who had the best year in college basketball. What Garza did this season hasn't been done in a MAJOR, (I know Dayton wouldn't know what that is,) conference in three decades.

Wonderful. The point is its not about what he could do if he wanted, or what he'll do in the pro's. Its about what Garza DID DO against consistently much better competition.

A couple of quick thoughts. First, idk about you guys but this doesnt surprise me one bit. And just think of the motivation and determination that Luka will have now coming back for his senior season. This entire team will have so much motivation based on Luka getting snubbed for POY and Iowa finishing the season ranked #25. I'm sorry for Luka, but this has the potential to turn out to be very good for us in the long run here. Congrats to Obi.

Also guys, remember this...Dayton is not a powerhouse team. They just had a historic season and Obi was their greatest player ever who is now going to the NBA. And their magical season got cut short by the coronavirus. Their future looks nothing like ours. So lets let them have this one and not hold onto any resentment here. 2020 baby!!!

The award is for NCAA player of the year and not who they, or you, expect to be the better NBA player.
