Dayton's Obi Toppin named AP Player of the Year

Sucks to be Garza playing such a tough schedule and losing to a lowly school player like obi. I guess Garza will forever be known as the guy who lost to Obi

You are pathetic

I guarantee if obi played in the big ten someone would have crushed him going up for one of those dunks.

Look. If the team had won its last 2 games we'd be hovering around the Top 10 and this one would go to Garza.

Congratulations to Obi, even though I thought Luka deserved it more. Statistically it can’t even be argued especially considering the matchups and the level of competition each faced. Sad that a team record has that much influence on the vote, but so be it.

I would not be at all surprised if Luka wins this award next season. He’s gonna wreck a lot of team’s game plans.

With as many experience players coming back next year, I doubt Luka will be leaned on as much as he was this year....points will be more distributed between the rest of the players. Garza, Wieskamp, JBO, Fredrick, Toussaint, Connor, Patrick, Nunge, and then there's Pemsl. Then there's the 5 new freshman that need to go the process to determine if any will get any playing time...
I'm guessing not only will his minutes be reduced but his points per game will go down.
Now if he becomes more efficient in his points per minutes played.....

If Luka does come back, you couldn't find a better mentor for Ogundele. Hard work and more hard work. Josh playing against Luka in practice will make a man out of him in a hurry.

Say what? He is definitely coming back based on what he and his father have said. Unfinished business.

They haven't said anything publicly, to my knowledge anyway. I'd put it at 50/50. Garza's stock will never be higher than it is right now. It doesn't change his ceiling, as he may very well not be an NBA player.

We Iowa fans have been so beat down by things never quite working out. But next year could be great if all the players and return. But big if.

As long as he's on this team, Luka will always be option one. That is carved in stone now. He may play less minutes but I would bet he won't play less than 35/game unless he his in foul trouble.

Lol, your magical year is over bud... We have played twice in recent memory. No one cares.

Look, Dayton would have done very well in a better league this year. They had the very real possibility of make the Final 4 and beyond, all taken away. It sucks, it also sucks that the leading scorer in the Big10 over the last 30 years, posting stats against Daniel Oturu, Tillman, Lamar Stevens, Jalen Smith (All Pro level players), Matt Harms, Jon Teske, Jackson Davis, Reuvers… That's 8 pro level guys Garza played against multiple times each throughout the year.

Who did Obi play against?
If we are so easy to beat, then schedule us for one of your cupcakes in a home and home pre conference season and let us see. Are you and Frannie afraid? I think so.

Because there's no benefit there for us by scheduling a home and home for a mid-major. Sorry.

I am a huge CBB fan and also know coach from his days back East. He is a favorite of mine. I have always liked the Iowa program and how they compete. I enjoy using rivals to see what other boards are saying etc. I am a UD grad and felt like I needed to protect my guy. Our teams run very different offenses and the two boys play different styles. Luke was the go too,Obi was very efficient, far less shots. Both deserving. But Obi is much more than a dunker or highlight reel.
Didn’t read the rest of the thread yet, but Luka was more efficient. .74 ppm and Obi had .63.

Ah yes, the balls that fans grow when their team has a good year. Iowa doesn't need to go out searching for quality opponents, their schedule is full of top 25 teams. Thats Daytons problem, not Iowa's....

40 for Player A.
38 for Player B.
To me, it’s gotta be player A. 1 ppm vs .95. Unless I’m completely misunderstanding what efficiency is (I apologize if so), efficiency is about getting the most bang for your buck. If I have to choose between 2 players for 35 minutes of game time, I’m going with the one who gives me more points and rebounds in that 35 minutes. I guess don’t care how many shots they take.

Are you saying that Toppin doesn't deserve the award? I am a HUGE Iowa/Luka fan but they both had exceptional years. Luka will win it next year when he leads Iowa to an NCAA championship.
Saying Toppin didn't deserve it and was just voted in because of his race is racist.
LOL. I guess you have been asleep the last decade. "Journalists" have been doing shit like this for years. It's the reason ESPN ratings fell so hard. People got sick of their PC BS. Their new president admitted it and vowed to "stick to sports" more.

Father Frank has,.. Told the media that his vote would be for Luka to skip the NBA evaluation,..(because they didn't need somebody telling them what they already know).., and then come back for the senior season,.. He did say that ultimately it would be Luka's choice..

(edit: Personally, I think this Covid thing makes it a no-brainer decision for Luka to come back....)

when was last time iowa made it out of the first weekend? Still waiting for iowa to have a good year so you can experience “balls that fans grow”

Also, obi just won another player of the year award. Garza won consolation prize of big man of the year so you should be happy.

How the hell is Dayton so highly ranked? Looking at the schedule, their highest quality win was probably against the Richmond Spiders. 29-2 sounds impressive, but there could be 20 other teams that could have done about as well against their powerful schedule. Luka got robbed.

Because they beat the Spiders! Ah! :)

So Toppin was the best player in th Atlantic 10? BIG WUP! Garza was the best player BY FAR in the Big 10, the toughest league in the country. If Obi played in the B1G, he wouldn't have even been on the All B1G first team.

Good luck to him in the pros. Dayton is going to suck next year.

Keep spewing your drival. None of it means anything more then your original posts here. Garza put up substancially better numbers against way better competition, period, end of story. No ridiculous posts or ignorant voters who obviously didn't watch anything but sportscenter highlights is going to change any of that.

That is very debatable.

(The better competition part is not)
