Dayton's Obi Toppin named AP Player of the Year

I don’t know why anyone responding to alle2 is surprised by what they are saying. They’re talking about some guy named Luke Garza, not Luka. Just a big misunderstanding.

A couple of quick thoughts. First, idk about you guys but this doesnt surprise me one bit. And just think of the motivation and determination that Luka will have now coming back for his senior season. This entire team will have so much motivation based on Luka getting snubbed for POY and Iowa finishing the season ranked #25. I'm sorry for Luka, but this has the potential to turn out to be very good for us in the long run here. Congrats to Obi.

Also guys, remember this...Dayton is not a powerhouse team. They just had a historic season and Obi was their greatest player ever who is now going to the NBA. And their magical season got cut short by the coronavirus. Their future looks nothing like ours. So lets let them have this one and not hold onto any resentment here. 2020 baby!!!
The problem is no matter how motivated, there's no guarantee he'll be able to duplicate last season for a variety of reasons, and he should be rewarded for what he did do. Its not supposed to be, "hey come back, and we'll give it too you next season".

So you guys think the National writers would vote for a guy from Dayton vs a Big Ten player who has much more TV exposure. Look both great players. Luke will win the Wooden or some other award. It’s very close.
Yes. The media would do such a thing. Why? Because voting for the black guy is the woke thing to do.

Look the NBA draft will answer the question of who experts thought was the best player. If Garza stays that will tell us that he wasn’t ready or highly thought of. Toppin is simply the better player. Be happy for kid, Garza can stay and perhaps win next year.

Your thought process is completely flawed...It's not an award for the best NBA prospect. It's who was the best player in the 2019-20 season. Now if you want to argue about impact to team, league, etc., that's where there is some subjectivity. But if you believe Obi played a better schedule against better bigs all season long, then you might be tunnel visioned.

I have nothing against Obi, UD etc. Actually like the school and spent many years in SW Ohio. At the end of the day, this is popularity contest of regional writers that truly are not necessarily qualified to make a national choice due to their own geographical biases.

I blame the morons on ESPN who have been touting Obi all season. Jay Bilas was at the top of the list and probably watched Garza one time this year. Its a popularity contest....lets be honest. Garza had a phenomenal year and it was a joy to watch him every game!

It’s really spot on. A symptom of ignorance is not being open minded and or attacking people and incapable of conversation. Sounds like a fit for you.

I’m not attacking you. I am being open minded and even said I really don’t have an issue with him winning. But your reasoning is severely flawed and your post is not spot on, it’s ignorant.

It's nice that a lesser conference like the A10 can get recognition for a player now and then, it's been 16 years since their last AP player of the year award. I doubt Luka really GAF, he's a team first guy, not a me first guy. Still think Luka is the fundamentally better and more versatile player and probably could beat Obi 1 vs. 1 about 7 out of 10 times.

Well that's just stupid.

Don't get me wrong, look at Garza's numbers vs top 25 teams compared to Toppin's. Imagine Garza playing in the A10 all year, he'd feast. But your comment is dumb as hell.

All spot on... your just bitter. Great kid and player. Obi won the AP, Luke may win some other.s. The flip of the coin will be who is drafted higher. Loses to really bad teams like DePaul and Nebraska and a neutral tells me perhaps the BIG TEN overrated. Hell Richmond who finished 4 in A 10 beat Wisconsin by 10. So CBB this year was very even and competitive year .

Wrong tool, one played in a real conference, one played in a JV conference and sad part is the one who played in the better conference had better numbers to....Dayton fans are tools that is a fact!

This reminds me of the George Kittle/Travis Kelce debate. Kittle got 66% of the vote (Kelce 34%) for 1st Team All Pro. The vote was decisive/a landslide. Chiefs fans, however, did not accept the voting outcome; they still said Kelce was the best TE in football.

In this case, Obi got 34 votes, compared to 24 for Garza. Nothing is gonna change the vote. We have to move on. The Wooden Award & Naismith awards are coming. Bitching is not gonna change a thing. It's a waste of time. Simple as that.

This is the first major POY award Garza has not won. Garza is a consensus All-American, the third in more than a century of Iowa basketball history.

But choosing a kid from Dayton over a kid from Iowa given the incredible difference in competition, not to mention Garza's numbers against top 25 teams and the fact that Garza was better than the Dayton kid overall statistically leaves those voters with no leg to stand on.

Look at the Oscars. Look at the Nobel prizes. Look at any award you want, and you'll see that, often, the most deserving person does not win.

Two specific examples: Todd Lickliter has a trophy that says he was the best college basketball coach in America a while back. And the Electoral College gave us the twit that currently sits in the White House.

It's always been that way, and it always will be. People are often just plain stupid.

Garza will win every national award except for the one by the sportswriters. That tells you all you need to know about the woke media and their agenda.
OFGS it's not that big of a deal where you have to make it about race. Not everything is about that, at least not to most of us.

They had to give something to Toppin. Luka was running the table. :)

34 people had one opinion
24 had a different opinion

Nothing we can do about it. And now, after the fact, we have one side arguing why Obi deserved it and another side arguing why Luka deserved it. Our votes (which we did not have) and our opinions don't matter. What's done is done.

That's right. Our votes do matter (albeit to a small degree) for the Naismith selection.

In hindsight, George Kittle was robbed. Should have been a two-time All-American if future success in the pros is the basis for college awards.

I'm pretty sure everyone here knows that are complaints aren't going to change anything. Personally, I wouldn't even have commented if the clown from Dayton hadn't come here with his ridiculous reasoning as to why Garza finished second, even though he had better numbers against drastically better competition. Eerily similar to the situation with Duncan and the Groza award unfortunately. I guess as Iowa fans we should just get used to this type of crap, except in this case the guy plays for DAYTON for Christ's sake, not KU or UNC.

you ought to see Twitter and the back and forth. i try to ignore it because my arguments are not going to change anything.

maybe Garza can win the Wooden & Naismith and be the consensus National Player of the Year.

It could go either way. So be it. What is classic is there are more posts on CF crapping on Garza today and celebrating Toppin winning than who they are getting for transfers or TH going pro. Good work Twins and his loser groupies. Way to care more about Garza than your worst season in 40 years. God that is sad.

OMG I can't even finish, this is pathetic... Meanwhile Garza is posting 20 and 10 against double teams from top 25 competition. Fvckin sad.
