Dean Oliver

This has been brought up several times in other threads regarding the departure of coach Francis. Why do we need a separate thread on it?

Still have a basketball sitting on a shelf signed by Deano and the rest of the Mason City team from one of their state title teams.

I see his name thrown out a lot but do we actually know anything about his coaching other than he’s a Hawk and is currently at Wisconsin?

Not being a dick, it’s a serious question
Agree ... I want the best person for the job ... not someone who gets the job because they have ties to the school ... Loved DeanO as a player ... I'm sure he is doing a fine job as an assistant ... but this is a hire you want to get right and you want to get the best person available ...

In his first year as an assistant they missed the tournament for the first time in 20 years
That was hardly Oliver's fault as you know. He's very quiet. As long as he's been here I don't recall hearing him speak. I have no idea how good of a coach he is. I suspect he is good. I'm positive he is a great person if Greg Gard hired him. Gard is like Tony Bennett in lots of ways, surrounds himself with good people.

Well their guards sorta suck and he hasn’t signed anyone good.

Anyone consider that that being an assistant at Wisconsin (consistently in the top of the big 10) is a better job than Iowa?

So is being the coach at a number of open jobs compared to Nebraska yet Hoiberg took that job presumably to come “home”. That would probably be the only reason Oliver would go.

Because what would you be reading and responding to without it, I guess. ;)

Unless you're a coach or recruiting expert that has actual knowledge of which Ass C recruits a given player or otherwise contributes through player development or game planning? This is pretty murky stuff.

One thing we do know about Dean is intelligence. I kind of recall that he was valedictorian of his HS class. Always had intelligent and articulate interviews. Played like a smart player.

However, DeanO also reminds us of the reality of the curse. Think about his freshman class? Ricky Davis, Dean, Duez Henderson and....the forgotten ephemeral pure shooter, the Galloway kid from Sioux City. I think he and Dean paired off in the state finals and literally scored around 80 points between them. Best HS game I've ever seen.

Galloway's career ends with a back injury, right after the Settles career destroying back injury. Ricky leaves after only a year for the NBA (he'd have been career scoring leader if he's played four seasons). Four healthy seasons out of those kids would have produced a lot of wins.

From Wisconsin athletic department :
Working primarily with ISU’s guards, Oliver has helped the Redbirds earn multiple Missouri Valley Conference accolades at the guard position, including 2017 MVC Player of the Year and MVC Defensive Player of the Year Paris Lee. Oliver also helped mentor guards DeVaughn Akoon-Purcell and Daishon Knight, who both earned All-MVC Second Team honors.

He had Tyler Herro up to the 11th hour last year! He's not too bad. He got 20" Lorne Bowman coming in. Anderson coming back from knee surgery this year. Plus Trice and Davison coming back. Not in bad shape.

Oh, so he lost the commitment of an NBA draft pick and signed an unranked PG?

Perhaps in your delusional world. A recruit de-committing to Kentucky at the end of the recruiting cycle after being committed for over a year is no big deal, it only goes to show how little you know about college hoops. Also the commit he got(Lorne Bowman) is a 3 star and its for a different cycle 2020! Its takes a special kind of idiot to troll his own message board.

I asked for a brief list of what makes dean such an obvious hire. I have yet to see an answer.

I can't speak for BigEddy, but I am content with Deano right where he is.
Wade, you lost credibility in this discussion by your comment in post #6.

Why do some want to limit us to former players, most of whom are from Iowa? Bring in someone with a different point of view and background. We've had the same staff forever, and a former player really adds no diversity or new perspective.
Nothing against Oliver or any other former players, just want something new and different.

Sure u would; you’re a Wisconsin fan.

Frankly there isn’t much evidence as to how effective Oliver has been at Wisconsin. He hasn’t brought much on the recruiting front to date, but he hasn’t had many opportunities either. It’s hard to know how much of the guard play can be attributed to him. I am indifferent on him until there are more data points to judge him by
