Media Day: Dembele, Koch & Traore battling for Starting 4 spot. Brock will be playing A LOT MORE. Owen Logo 3s? Dix at the 1, Pryce at the 2

David Eickholt, a beat reporter for 24/7, reported on July 8 that he wouldn't be surprised to see Traore start at the 4.

On June 5 I wondered if this would be the rotations. Hopefully Fran does not go much deeper than 10.

Note that there are just 2 seniors in the top 10.

Starting 5:
6’3” PG Drew Thelwell (SR)
6'5" SG Josh Dix (JR)
6'7" F Payton Sandfort (SR)
6’7” PF Seydou Traore (SO)
6'10" C Owen Freeman (SO)

Next 5 off the bench:
6'0" PG Brock Harding (SO)
6'7" F Cooper Koch (FR)
6'7" F Pryce Sandfort (SO)
6'8" PF Ladji Dembele (SO)
6'8" PF Chris Tadjo (FR)

Other 3 scholarship players:
6'11" C Riley Mulvey (JR)
6'9" F/C Even Brauns (SR)
6'5" SG Carter Kingsbury (JR)

Seems like a ho hum media day i like our chances this year i think Fran can now look at match ups and create a line up to give us the best chance to win

Enjoyed listening the interviews, and like most of what I heard. Seems clear that Dembele and Traore are both going to be on the floor a lot, but probably not just at the 4. It also sounds like Cooper is probably earning some playing time, but Tadjo might take a little time to adjust to this level.

Maybe the one thing I wasn't thrilled to hear was Fran suggesting that we might see Dix at PG some. Being positive, that might be in part an indicator of Pryce's improvement, but I still believe that Dix is a much better 2. Maybe I missed it, but I had hoped to hear an interview with Thelwell. I heard a lot about Harding and his leadership, but nothing about Drew. I am not sure what to make of that, because his prior leadership was a big reason I liked his pick up from the portal.

Not buying the 13 deep rhetoric, but Iowa really is going to be very deep and versatile, and hard to guard. Let's hope the added athleticism and strength greatly improves our defense and rebounding. That would make Iowa a very tough out.

Speaking of Drew Thelwell, what do you think about what follows?

The starting 5 might be this?
Brock
Dix
Payton
Ladji
Owen

IDK, but I also would be shocked if Traore isn't getting a lot of minutes at 4 and 3. I liked the potential I saw last year from Dembele, who is STRONG and potentially a really good interior defender and rebounder. I would love to see him not be spending most of his time backing up Owen. I think Traore and/or Cooper might spend as much time at 3 as 4. Traore even at 2. I hope that the failure to mention Thelwell doesn't mean that he isn't what we all had hoped he would be. I don't care whether Harding or Thelwell starts, but I think we need meaningful minutes from both at PG.

I expect early lots of different lineups and substitutions, so entertaining. Experiment with the cupcakes and see how players interact. He will have many opportunities to go big or small, defense and or shooters. Season can’t start soon enough, hopefully lineups get cleaned up and we blow some teams off the court early so everyone gets some pt early, as they may be needed at some point to play significantly
