Derek St John

We own 15 titles because of an "in state rival" as our coach.
Yep. Damn lucky the chips fell where they did in Gable's case. We got struck by a good kind of lightning.

I'm 100% convinced that if Derek St. John could have gotten on the Iowa Staff somehow and still made a living, he'd have done that, or any other Coach with Iowa ties that is still Coaching in DI.

I'm not concerned in the least that Dresser and Co. are going to be "stealing" any Iowa recruits. I would actually like to see Iowa State become relevant again, I think it helps Iowa more than it hurts us, and for damn sure it will help with attendance and intrigue at our duals with them, in Ames and Iowa City.

We've owned this State from a recruiting perspective and head to head perspective for the large majority of my life and there is no reason to think it's going to change anytime soon.

So with that said, I wish Derek St. John well in whatever his path is going forward. The guy was one hell of a Hawkeye.

The only way ISU being good can possibly help us is to create some excitement on our schedule that gathers some national attention. Of course we would need to continue to win the dual . The recruits they go after are more apt to be the same ones we want vs anything a team like PSU wants. PSU will not be losing recruits to ISU if they really want them, we could be affected.

I do find it hilarious reading the Cyclone board and they are talking about not wanting Metcalf or Ramos because they didn't show up when the lights were brightest.

Or the other guy who says "Dresser is a class act and runs a clean program. He is not Tom Brands. All of these guys being mentioned have been successful in many levels and I would welcome any of them"

He must have forgot that DSJ, Ramos, Metcalf and even Zadick really all were molded in the college room by Brands.
They hate Brands and want someone who is going to run their program with class, so they hire a guy that calls other coaches P*****'s (That's for you Fortunata) during an interview. Makes sense

I see the reasons why the new ISU coach doesn't want anyone on staff with an ISU background. The ISU alums have not shown any ability to consistently perform up to expectations outside of an occasional guy having one good season. Look no further than Gadsen, Hall, Witherspoon. All were one hit wonders.

With the lack of high quality high school wrestling in State... Iowa nor ISU will succeed with Iowa kids. Battling Dresser every few years for a recruit isn't going to make or break the Hawks.

As someone else already stated... perhaps in 3-4 years ISU wins more than 2-3 matches in the dual vs Iowa. KD's first goal should be beating UNI. On paper, the Clones are big underdogs against the Panthers next season.

Maybe Dresser takes the Hoiberg route... find transfers and kids kicked out of other programs and have a good relationship with the Ames PD when things get wild.

Well I think we gained a lot of "national attention" when both programs were ranked at or near the top of the heap for a hell of a long time. But maybe that's just me.

That dude is a sick individual. Some serious pent up little brother hate going on there.

A 3x AA and national champ was a 1 hit wonder? You can't be serious, you could even make a small argument for Hall since he made the podium twice (albeit 7th and 8th) I know you hate ISU and Minny but c'mon

Who the F is this Jukota that is an ISU fan on CF? He is a miserable human being. Clearly posing to be a true fan of the sport to try and rip Iowa at every turn. That idiot is why the sport suffers.

Yup...you guys think Mitch is hater. There are dudes that puke any time Iowa is mentioned...Jud being the chief one.

You referenced the individual who gave us our badge of honor... "The Cesspool".

Facts be known... other than ragging on KJ for six years because he was such a poor developer of talent, I actually dislike the fan base considerably more than the program. And I belittle the two programs because I know some of their fans read this forum every day.:p

Chief - he even goes after you when you are nothing but objective. If anything, you don't cross the line on CF from what I can tell. I think the sport is and has been in a fairly unstable position for some time. But, I think true wrestling fans who like to discuss and banter civilly can only help the sport. But name-calling and personal attacks on those in the sport will only hurt. My 2 cents.

Saying something about Metcalf coming in town this weekend?

DSJ had the least athletic ability I've ever seen from an NCAA champ. This was a good hire by ISU

Hey, I admit the vast majority on this board know the technical side of wrestling better than me. That said, my view of DSJ is far more favorable than yours. DSJ had elite scrambling skills. In my view, you can't be a great scrambler if you aren't athletic. If my view is wrong so be it.

I truly believe that if David Taylor was't in his path, he would have been a multiple NCAA champ. It's as much his fault for going up against Taylor and losing as it was for Taylor losing to Dake. They just happened to have super elite wrestlers in their path. They are all athletic in my eyes.

About the only thing I said was that they were soft but I even said I didn't mean it as an insult...it was a fact...and that the hiring of DSJ would help remedy that. I don't think it was him but another guy was like 75% of Hawkeye fans are douchebags but don't mean it as an insult. Almost corrected him and said 83% of us were.

Good one Chief. I just hate the vitriol that those fans have. Don't they realize that the better wrestling gets the better they will get especially in terms of popularity? And not that this would happen ever, but the only current sports worth a shit for ISU are title 9 sports or non-revenue sports (women's basketball, cross country, track, and volleyball) plus a little men's basketball and ISU isn't scared to cut mens's sports, see e.g., baseball. Like I said, wrestling won't go away but they should stop spewing shit until they are competitive again like not getting 1 point at Nationals.

Amen. You know who I like over there? Buf87...man that dude stuck through thick and mostly thin

To be a NCAA champ you have to be athletic. It wasn't a slight as him. He's just not as athletic as most NCAA champs I've seen.

Dresser is a car salesman. I don't care if he was a hawk after all his tantrums and bad mouthing Iowa while at VT. Those actions and taking over isu tell me being a former hawk does not mean much to him these days. DSJ or any other hawk that wants to be in bed with him over there can go fly a kite too. Obviously they can't all stay at Iowa and I like them to do well at not so direct rival programs as long as not vs us but ISU is a different animal, throw Minny, OSU, psu and maybe even fosu in there too. You go to one of those, you go to our #1 in state rival we wrestle every year and I don't care what you did wearing the black and gold. You are the enemy now. Dresser knows he can't sell ISU, that is why he is trying to sell a second version of Iowa. Clown fans are so desperate they will slobber all over these Iowa connections who they lashed at in disgust previously if they think they will help them.
Some people need to get a life. Fans like you make people cheer when Iowa loses. Would love to have DSJ at OSU. Need a different favor in our room!

Changing directions a little bit here. Good for St. John getting a spot coaching D1. I guess I do wonder how he does walking into a living room of a recruit. Always seemed like a pretty quiet guy, not overly social. The opposite of Morningstar, who could strike up a conversation with anyone like they've always known him.

Chief - buf seems like a decent dude. A fan but at least semi-objective and doesn't seem to post from place of hatred. I guess at the end of the day anyone posting on any wrestling boards is presumably a fan of a sport that let's face it struggles at times especially on a nationwide basis. I mean 3 of the biggest population states in Cali, Texas and Fla have what 1 team in terms of D-1 wrestling? Sorry derailed this thread a little more focused on the wrestling community to help grow the sport not spew vile comments.

I get you...he could scramble but his positioning was so solid which made him very tough to takedown. Another guy who exceeded his limitations.

Absolutely what I meant. Far exceeded his physical limitations.

From what I've seen we've always had lots of guys like that, so called grinders. Not talented enough to just dominate competition but good enough at wrestling to win. And our super talented guys often have had off the mat issues or other priorities.

That's absolutely laughable. Tom Brands' program is as clean as any other program nationwide. Iowa follows the rules down to the letter.

It's f**ny to me how Iowa haters see whatever they want to see. What they hate about Tom and Terry is a complete caricature of the men and doesn't even resemble who they actually are or what they stand for. It's going to be more and more difficult to feel sorry for ISU now that they have hope of some success.

Right. And our "classless" head coach has had nothing but glowing things to say about Dresser in return.

Uh, Brands fired Zadick. Why would anyone think they would be buddies?

I thought Zadick's position was interim and when they opened it up they hired Morningstar? I got the feeling the hunting situations that the wrestlers and Zadick were involved in created some pressure from the admin to replace him.

Who was Dan Gable's staff when he 1st came to Iowa?

Thor and Hercules IIRC.

Were they Iowa State alumni also?

Hercules was European.........Olympus I think...........could have been post-grad work though.

Thor never graduated..........lots of raiding parties to England and all.......kinda like party boy PDIII.

I'll text Samson's wife Delilah though, she's sure to remember.
