Very surprised by this move as I don't recall Iowa ever doing this before with the amount of cover two they play.

It was announced this morning, from King himself. Reported on twitter by Marc Morehouse amongst a few others.

It's a good move by Iowa ... Lazard is ISU's only serious threat. ISU knows it can't beat Iowa by running the ball so expect to see lots of passes ... Hoping to see Iowa blitz and pressure Lanning into making poor throws.

ISU will play better than it did against UNI ... It always does against Iowa ... That being said, Iowa will win the game convincingly ...

Iowa does not play a cover2. Cover2 corners play tighter and have more of a flat assignment because they have safety coverage over the top.

Iowa's corners keep everything in front of them. They don't let receivers behind them because they are responsible for a deep quarter.

This is exactly right...uh...wait...why were Miami's receivers behind Mabin? I'm not expert, admittedly, but Iowa does some version of a cover 2 zone a number of times...and I think we got burned on it Saturday.

Who will be the ISU receiver on the other(Mabin's) side?

I'd guess their MVP if the Clones win! I kid. I kid.

I'm just surprised that King came out and said that. You would think they would allow the Clones to game plan how they were going to match Lazard on Mabin all week and then shock them with King Island once the game started.

ISU does seem to have some pretty decent receivers besides Lazard. We need to keep some pressure on Lanning because even he will look pretty damn good if we just let him sit back there all day and pick us apart.

They do shake it up occasionally and keep CBs underneath but a majority of the time it is some version of quarters coverage

Didn't Mabin cover Lazard last year? I don't remember him having that great of a game.

Mabin and J Jackson covered him a lot last year as they purposely put Lazard opposite of King most of the game. J Jackson had a great game last year since he was our nickle CB that was on Lazard 3-4 times.

I think Iowa plays a lot of Man Under Cover 2. The corners are supposed to stay with them but get help over the top which in theory should allow them to be more aggressive.

I have a hard time believing this is legit. It makes no sense for King or anyone else close to the program to announce this.

Honestly, people like to rag on Mabin a lot, but we fans don't know for sure what coverage responsibilities he had on some of those big plays.

I will add last that the greater issue of concern is putting pressure on Lanning. Who is covering Lazard is of secondary importance.

Might be leaking this out there as false information...similar to the weekly 2 deep....no real meaning
I smell some gamesmanship going on there. But I like it.

Suppose that it is true ... what is ISU going to do? They're already operating within new schemes on O ... and now Iowa is going to force them away from their base O? In other words ... enough guys on ISU's O are already having enough on their plate getting down the new schemes. It would make it tougher for them to adjust and correctly execute away from their base.

Suppose that ISU decides to change nothing ... and Iowa still opts for more of a match-up approach to coverage. Then, ISU is in danger of throwing the ball a lot at Desmond King. While Lazard is talented and will win some battles ... King will win some too. I like the idea of forcing ISU to throw toward King. If they don't ... then Iowa has effectively neutralized ISU's best receiving weapon.

The only other option is for ISU to scheme specifically to get Lazard open ... even with King on him. What does that imply? Picks and rubs? Maybe a lot of quick routes ... then throw double-moves at him?

What if it's not true? Can ISU afford to ignore such a blatant announcement of Iowa's defensive strategy?

My gut is that it is true. I think that Phil is throwing King a bone. It is an invitation to play against one of the better WRs we'll face all season ... and if he can prove that he can shut him down ... then it will only help his draft-stock. On top of all that ... it is nice extra motivation for King. King is short and Lazard is tall ... he's going to have to play at the top of his game to shut down Lazard.

If it is true, does it suggest that we may be playing a little more man defense than usual? Maybe a little man-under 2 deep look or some man-free to allow us to blitz our LB's a little more often. If we're in man-free which of the three LB's do you trust the most in man coverage against Warren?

I think in the end, we will play our base with King at RC and Mabin at LC and then maybe switch it up on 2nd and 3rd and long putting King on Lazard.

Why wouldn't it be true? Last years Iowa State game, King followed Lazard for most of it... The only reason they stopped doing it during the game was because some guys were getting fatigued

FWIW.....just listened to KF's press conference, he was asked and he made no such comment.

But yet, a player is tweeting that? Knowing KF's opinion of any social media and a player announcing the game plan, wow,.......I doubt it. Did Morehouse confirm either the tweet was really from King or with KF or a SID?

I see what you did there...

Ferentz made it sound like it is something they might try but not a for sure thing they will do.

Unless you know the defensive call it is nearly impossible to know what the coverage is. We used to toy around with our alignments to try to confuse the QB. I'm actually really confused by your second graphic as it shows the FS and SS coming up into the MLBs zone when they should be covering those post routes. Anyway, in high school one of our coverages was a cover 2 with quarters principles, almost like a man-zone. We would essentially be in a quarters coverage until someone broke off a route. In the second graphic, King would jam the X receiver and trail him until the W receiver made his break towards the sideline. If the W receiver made a break to the middle and so does the X receiver, King would continue to tail the X receiver.

King is being sneaky by making the clowns change their game prep for the last 6 months. They spent all summer game planning for Iowa and using Lazard. I wouldn't be surprised if the coaching staff doesn't have a nervous break down over this news. They should have spent a couple of days prepping for UNI.

Angerer said on the Hawkeye Report podcast recently that Iowa primarily runs Half/Quarter/Quarter coverages.
