DeVries NOT a candidate for Iowa job. Ben McCollum the next Iowa Head Coach?

Why do some of you think it would be a disaster if it is not DD or McCollum? Out of all the potential candidates, these are the only 2 acceptable ones?

Jesus, the complaint is usually "why not cast a wider net?"
i’m not one of the ones saying this, but I understand where the fans are coming from who have that attitude. More specifically, it wouldn’t be a disaster for the basketball program as much as a really poor look for BG and the athletic department overall, striking out on their obvious top two choices, both of which they seemed to have an intrinsic advantage with. If that happens, BG had better really, really hope that her guy ends up working out well because the fan base will not give her a lot of slack, especially if DD & BM are very successful elsewhere.

seems like these are the only 2 being talked about by the media, etc.

i thought Steve Forbes might be a realistic candidate but there hasn't been much, if at all, brought up about him

Two great coaches with Iowa ties who are both in high demand. If we miss on those two it will be an epic failure, and we'll continue to float in obscurity.

Lets say BM was Beth’s choice all along. Would the process be playing out any differently than it currently is?
  • Beth interviews DD once his season ended. (Needs him as a backup in case BM says no)
  • Beth says “we can’t make a decision until talking to other coaches who are currently in the tournament”
  • DD gets contacted by IU
  • DD tells Beth, “I have serious IU interest. I need to know now whether I’m getting the Iowa job”
  • Beth says “can’t make that decision yet, have to wait”
  • DD says “alright, I’m taking the IU offer while it’s out there” and rescinds his candidacy
Based on no inside knowledge whatsoever. But seems plausible

and who knows, there might already be an agreement w/ McCollum done and Beth/Iowa is just waiting for Drake to lose

So, is DeVries definitely a no, and McCollum now a strong maybe? I don't get premium content, but yesterday all the chatter made is seem like Iowa and DeVries were close to a deal. I agree with some others that unless Iowa was getting a lot of early positive feedback, Iowa should have included a few other coaches.

Well, sounds like we got our answer on the loss of DD as a candidate. It came down to NIL and Beth couldn’t guarantee a number that DD thinks he needs to compete. And she’s not going to adjust the rev share from $2.5M to compensate. I’m good losing him for that because it tells me he doesn’t have confidence enough in himself to win on his own merits to draw more NIL or in his ability to meet and greet folks to get more donations.

How many of those were at the D1 level again where recruiting matters a ton???? Not just bringing you guys with you from your prev school?
None of them. He said he didn't go after players that Duke was after. I think he's got a handle on it when he moves up.

Doubtful..he has more integrity than that

I get what you are saying but couldn't he 100% be preparing his team while at the same time his agent negotiates with Beth and other potential suitors? then when Drake's run in the Big Dance is over, he can go over the offers from other schools with his agent.

I forget the timing of the Bowlsby / Alford talks but didn't they pretty much have a deal done before the NCAA Tournament started? IIRC, Alford joked that he felt he had to keep winning because Tom Davis/Iowa kept winning (both teams made the Sweet 16 but lost their next game).

There also is the issue of having to pay WVU a big buyout and then his salary was pretty high. To me the numbers didn't make
sense to pay a guy that much guaranteed. Put more money into NIL, not coaches.

Sure thing. “We must get either of these coaches because they have Iowa ties.”

There are plenty of good coaches out there.
There are plenty of good coaches…that’s true. But the pool of good coaches that would come to Iowa and would be good fits is significantly less. Which is why getting one of these 2 is important. They’re both good coaches, have indicated interest in us, and would be good fits.

I hate to break it to you but Iowa isn’t really a beacon for quality coaches without Iowa ties. I could give a shit less, tbh—I just understand it’s near impossible without it.

Hey I’d like to get either of them. Just don’t think it’s a big deal if they can’t get them. Open the doors up for coaches like Will Wade or even Nick Nurse (no way Nurse wants to go down with the ship in Philly).

Seems DD's interest isn't as strong as everyone assumed.

I think this is all part of the game to get the big money donors to step up or shut up when it comes to Iowa mens bball. We shall see if they put their money where their mouth is.
